With your shops' abilities, we would want you to reinstall brakes on the magazine car. Also use 3/4 in. plywood on the sides, rather than 3/8 in. to improve durability. Your crew does wonderful work and thanks for the update.

I think we'll definitely use thicker plywood.

That long stretch on the mainline looks fantastic. Class 1 couldn't do it any better. I envy you guys working on such a fun and rewarding project. Keep the videos coming.

You don't need the end platforms on the tool car, we a good spot for an air compressor and a generator set
@EauGalleScenicRailway28 күн бұрын
That's a good idea but we don't really use air or AC for any of the tools we use now so, I don't think we'll go that route. I think we'll probably move the grab bars and try to use the end platforms for crew transportation. Not sure yet.

Every time you come out with a new update going on at the railroad, it just brings a big smile to me on seeing your empire grow. While I personally would like seeing the bobber turned into a caboose, I understand you wanting to restoring it to what it was designed for. Track work and ballasting looks awesome and your merry track gang deserves major kudos with a job well done. Really like seeing Joe The Shop Man with what's he doing new in the shop. Also kudos in installing close clearance signs for added safety. Keep up the great work especially with your camera updates and drone footage. It brings out the details with what you're doing very nicely. And looking forward to the trolley unveiling!

very exciting to see the projects that are in queue for the coming weeks/months. Love the plan for the powder car, it's a great idea to use it as a tool cart. Great review by Justin, and interesting upgrade for the side by side. Thanks!

I like the looks of the brake handles on the munitions car. To bad you cannot find or figure the missing brake hardware. I love these videos and wish I lived closer. Thank You for sharing.
@EauGalleScenicRailwayАй бұрын
Yeah, if we could find someone from the Atlas Powder company that knew something about these cars maybe we could better understand and restore the brake system. But as they sit we're not even sure we have the correct wheelsets on the car. We can't even see any place on the wheels or the axels where the brakes would have applied. Since the cars have those wood beams isolating the wheels from the rest of the car, I wonder if the brake pads might have been wood. Or, if the brake handles were added later and might not even be original. If anyone knows how to find some original drawings, we'd love to have a copy.

Love the idea of the tool car. Can I suggest adding solar panel(s) to the roof to charge your tool batteries?

Maybe not fold out steps, but a running board? Bolted on to return to original look quazi-fast
@EauGalleScenicRailwayАй бұрын
I don't remember anyone suggesting a running board yet. That's a great idea. We often have buckets of screw spikes to haul around. They could sit on the running boards as well. And it would make it easy for the guys to hop on the end platforms. Hmm...

It will not be too hard to replace the brake rigging. At least keep all of the rodding and levers.
@EauGalleScenicRailwayАй бұрын
We'll definitely keep the levers and the rodding, but there isn't much left other than the levers. And like I mentioned on another comment, there isn't even any sign of how the brake system worked. There is nothing on the wheelsets that would indicate where brake pads could have been applied. There is nothing on the wheelsets to indicate any connection to the lever ever existed. We're not even sure if they are the right wheelsets. If anyone can find a drawing or someone that used to work on these for Atlas Powder, we'd love to have more information.

I would love to come and see your railway myself but know hats never going to be possible. Im 73 now , my health is not what it was. Looking forward to your next video.

Obviously your railroad is not an 'Historic' railroad so turning the 'Magazine' car into a caboose, tool car or even a moveable snack car (LOL) is your choice. But since your plans are to now turn it into a tool car (A very sensible project considering the work that will constantly need to be done on the line), that is not only reasonable but also your choice to suit your needs. In that regard, seeing that you DO NOT plan on riding the car end platforms or using the brake mechanism, why not restore those features on the car, as it sits now, to a cosmetic appearance only and continue with the door replacement, creating the shelving, wall mount features for tools inside the car, etc. for tool storage, tying the car down with chain when needed, leaving the brake mechanism as is, leave the stirrup steps on the car end corners and the grab irons in place, as an historic rendering of what the car was used for at one time, and show it off to your ridership with a bit of historic flare to your tour railroad rides? It seems to me that informing your riders of the historic nature of the car and leaving as much of it intact as possible to show them what it looked like back in the day and what it's job was at one time would be an extremely interesting addition and attraction to the train rides. Giving a short narration to the riders during the train rides about the cars history and appearance would be one highlight of the railroad and the train ride. Just my thoughts and unsolicited input. I like seeing what your outfit has done in creating this railroad and the work that has gone into it's creation in the videos you put out for all to see. Keep up the good work and here's hoping to great success in your endeavor. Dale Trongale, former Sumpter Valley volunteer.
@EauGalleScenicRailwayАй бұрын
Dale, thank you for your well-thought out perspective and opinion. I really do appreciate learning about how other railfans view our choices, especially when it comes to restoration challenges. Regardless of what changes we make to "the magazine car" we will definitely inform visitors of the historical nature of the car, and we will definitely try to keep it at least representative of the original, as you suggest. And when we're done working on it it will definitely look much much more like it did when originally used as it does now. With that said we don't really know what was truly "original". We only assume those levers are for brakes. We're not even sure of that. They could have had something to do with securing part of the load or opening and closing front and back doors that appear in some of the units on the pictures. We just don't know. They had lots of versions of that car. All we have to go on is the pictures at facebook.com/groups/egrail/permalink/863406372300611/. Some appear to not even have the levers. And I do think we should add a platform step that runs the length of the car (as some KZbin follower suggested) for getting in and out of the car and getting up onto the platforms. Taking a crew out onto the track standing on those platforms and leaning on the bar would be cool. Changing the grab bar and the step and removing the lever would make the car more functional and safer. So that's kind of the way I'm thinking about it, as of now, with my opinion still subject to change. ~Dave
