Sometimes I see people claiming Maddy must just be closeted or something, but if you look into her life story, she actually has done a lot of exploring, and at one point thought she might be gay/bi. She did that work, and at the end of it, was like "well, guess I'm straight; I just don't like gender conformity." She's so much more nuanced than what people assume at face value.

A pet peeve I have is when people go out of their way to call Maddy “he”. It’s so invalidating to her drag and basically says that no matter how hard she works and what she achieves, she will never get the respect she deserves as a drag queen simply because of her sexual orientation. I kinda hate that Maddys talent show wasn’t valued because of the “you need to be funny to win ” because it reminded me of how Gia was robbed … I’m now starting to understand what Roxy was saying in her original season…..” not everything has to be funny” and I agree…. Good tv doesn’t always have to depend on humor
@blakegillpuente3904 Жыл бұрын
I don't think there really is the standard that everything has to be funny to win. Look at AS7's Talent Show: neither Shea nor Monet did comedy. They killed it. Anetra didn't do comedy (not really) in S15, and she won. Roxxxy herself was a winner in AS2- again, not funny. And even in Maddy's season (14), Angeria and Kornbread both did typical lipsync performances. I think it really depends on reading the room and knowing the audience, and for Maddy specifically, her style of drag *IS* based in humor. So, it makes sense to add it.

Agreed. I feel like this segregation of participants in drag is so pointless. There are women like Dolly Parton who call themselves drag queens because they're accentuating feminine attributes for entertainment. I disagree with the "drag is exclusive to queer people" mindset. Drag as an artform can actually benefit hetero men because it allows them to acknowledge their femininity and it can break down toxic masculinity. It can allow hetero women to step up their femininity and get them in touch with a side of themselves they never knew existed. Drag isn't just something for the queer folks and while its' history in queer spaces is well-defined, we should allow it to be used as a tool for people to express themselves and have fun. If drag is art, then we should be more welcoming to people who want to express themselves through this artform. Queer or straight.
@dulaman9791 Жыл бұрын
Tbh drag as in men dressing as women was never really a gay exclusive activity, in european and japanese theater men used to play women roles all the time (and im pretty sure you didn't have to qualify as homo to do the part). Obv there were disproportionately a large amount of queer folks in theater, but yk it didn't start as this gay and trans only thing. Obv around the 18-19th centuries actual clubs and places created for and by queer people started to pop up, but that's a more recent phenomenon
@BlueShadow7777 Жыл бұрын
@@dulaman9791 I mean, to be fair, the reason no women were involved in those plays was... mostly just misogyny or strict gender rules. In the case of kabuki in japan, women originated the artform, but then the government banned them from performing because they were "too sexual", and then men took over. In other cases, it was mostly a matter of "decorum", theater was "too public" for women (this is the case of shakespeare-era plays). The only one I can think about where men play female roles and it's not due to excluding women is Pantomime, where women do participate (the gender reversal is mostly played for comedy, but it's there) On the other hand, yeah, Drag is a wonderful artform and a great tool for self-exploration, discovery and expression, and I think it should be open to those willing to learn and respect it

As an Asian, what Maddy experienced on the show were basically microaggressions. Microaggressions don’t have mean intentions and are sometimes even meant to be nice, but that doesn’t mean they don’t make the subject feel objectified and uncomfortable. When all the queens were all gathered around Maddy like “ooh so you’re straight huh? That means you like girls? Why are you doing drag?” it reminded me of being the only Asian at a gathering having to act as the sole representative of my community and field questions like where I’m “really” from. i don't think they should be judged on the same standards though... or at least we shopuldn't push for any drag queen show to automatically have to be about drag kings too. On that note, maybe you don't think this ay but i'm going on a little rant since i see it a lot on this comment section...it shouldn't be changed in a way that erases it's original identity and passion, andit's no justy any drag race but ru paul's in the end. No "prude shaming", not too sexual to not incomodate aces, not too gay to allow heteros, etc etc etc. it doesn't have to be the one queer show to encompass it all. it makes me sad, the show should be allowed to stay as gay and sexual as it wants to be, no one queer space should be demanded to be the one fits all space. There's a plethora of interests and approches, and there's even the fact that some exclusive spaces are even healthy to be kept around since they tend to disapear and be absorved once they get too undefined or absorved by regular media. in other situations it just turns into tokenism were we then have to have hetero cis gay lesbians ace pans one of each and of each race, gender spectrum, sexuality, class, political afiliation, etc or else the space isn't being queer in "the right way"- Just how a lot of heteronomative and homophobic people say that an all gay space or an all women space isn't real equality and it's offending them in some way by not leting them in. it's the other side of the same coin. I, for one, am fine with queer spaces having different corners and it's own different media spaces if they so choose to, no one queer space has or will cover it all, and it's natural! it's such a broad spectrum of interests, identities and aproaches. If a different drag contest has a different approach, i'm all for it, i would watch an all kings show. Or a show mostly focused either on the talent show of things, or just the fashion design of it toning down the sexual side of the pit crew that makes some unconfortable and such, i would be open to a variety of approaches. it doesn't have to be the only drag race.

My only real life story about Maddy is that she was the only queen to not charge for a meet n greet at drag con UK 2023 (had a big sign up saying so). Like she could have done and that would have been fine. But, I'm pretty sure she wants to make clear her position in our community is a privilege. In terms of my fav moment on Drag Race? That moment when she shaded RuPaul's approach of "everyone should do drag" to RuPaul's face, in the reunion.

People made a huge fuss over Drag Race casting a straight man, but in examining the show and its fans across multiple seasons and spinoffs, it seems to me that the biggest crime was that Maddy wasn't attracted to men. The show is obsessively narratively centred around attraction to men. The focus on the beefy pit crew, the horny reactions of contestants, the weird thirst challenges with the pit crew. Every male contestant is presented as gay by default, and those who aren't men are still framed as having exclusive attraction to men. Even the main judges in the modern era are all gay men or straight women, and this is a common trend in many international seasons too. The show has never had an honest conversation about bisexuality on any episode in any country despite there being so many bi contestants. Trans women and non binary contestants on the show are also often presented with this weird undertone of "well they were gay before they were trans". We have had so many wonderful trans women compete on the show but not one of them has mentioned being a lesbian or having a girlfriend or wife - why does the show only cast straight trans women? Oh yeah, because they are seen by production as adjacent to gay men, who are the focus of the show; I think that's concerning and transphobic. Drag Race has had a total of three "controversial" casting choices in the gender & sexuality department. Maddy Morphosis, a straight man. Victoria Scone, a lesbian. Scaredy Kat, a bi/pan man with a girlfriend. (Of course there have been other bi and pan contestants but they flew under the radar because their stories were never discussed. Clover Bish might be sapphic too, our other cis woman contestant, but I don't know her sexuality.) The crime of these three contestants, the only thing they had in common? They were in relationships with women at the time. The only non-controversial dating-a-woman on-screen storyline we've had was when Kendall Gender had a video call with her girlfriend. It was beautiful and sweet and I hope it's a sign of the show moving in the right direction. I just wish it had included an honest conversation about non-gay male sexuality because a lot of people will take away from this scene that Kendall is a gay man by default and that because he's dating a trans women it doesn't count as dating a woman, which is yiiikes.

Yep. When I learned more about the queens outside the show, I was so surprised at just how many of them are bi/pan (and also how many are non binary). Yet that basically never gets alluded to in any way in the narrative of the show. Everyone is treated as and assumed to be a gay man (or maybe, if they’re lucky, a straight trans woman) unless otherwise stated. Honestly I’m just hoping someone does a bi or pan pride runway at this point because that legitimately might be the only way to get the discussion opened up. Edit: Also, they do definitely still have a long way to go on their inclusion of lesbians and non binary people.
@sorrowinthewind4258 Жыл бұрын
Drag race has a lot of nb people and they always discuss it, and even in a wrong way lol. I remember Pythia saying "I'm non binary so I can wear male and female clothes" and I was like gurl you can be a man and wear whatever you want, you're just creating boxes for what's a man and a woman by saying that 😅😅
@anony-missy Жыл бұрын
@@sorrowinthewind4258 To be fair, the show has been getting better at having queens openly identify as non binary more in the more recent seasons, but the earlier seasons didn’t feature much discussion of them at all. IIRC the first time I remember a Queen talking about being non binary on the show proper was in season 12 when they had Gigi Goode talk about her gender identity falling somewhere outside the binary. Since then there have been more queens who have mentioned similar things. However, I’m pretty sure there was an interview Peppermint did about being nervous to be publicly out as a trans woman with the cast of season 9, only after she told them she found out that several other queens on the cast were non binary. I have a hard time believing none of the non binary queens discussed their identities at all, but I don’t remember anything about them making it into the show, although admittedly I may be wrong. Also, I haven’t been able to find the quote you’re referring to (I’m not doubting it happened, I was just hoping for some context), but did Pythia say that quote during the show? If so, it’s quite possible Pythia actually has a more nuanced understanding of what it is to be non binary, but the editors of the show cut down to just that quote and called it a day. I am glad that there has been progress, and I was perhaps a bit harsh in my initial assessment of the show because they have been more consistently speaking about non binary identities. But I do still think that they could continue to improve in that area.

This comment is so perfect I took a photo of it to keep. Adding to your conversation about the show’s near obsession with gay attraction, to me it feels like the show “prude shames” anyone who refuses to participate in their hypersexual antics. Max was portrayed as stuck-up for being uncomfortable with Pit Crew mini challenges. Queens with more wholesome, innocent aesthetics such as S10 Blair St. Clair are assumed to be that way because something MUST be wrong with them, which I theorize was the reason why Ru forced the trauma story out of her. I think I’m especially sensitive to this because I’m on the ace spectrum (and I’m not optimistic about ace representation on drag race any time soon), but the show’s hypersexuality is so uncomfortable because they actively exclude people who dislike it, and gay people are already stereotyped as sexual deviants who want to bang everything that moves.

I want a drag king on the show. Drag kings are no different from queens except for the masculinity aspect but then again there are a lot of masculine Queens on the show. They're going to cave in someday. (also more afab people in General would help)

Drag King is just completely different from Queen, a lot of kings are lesbians, should we add scantily clad women into the pit crew? include more jokes about sex with women? Change and curate all the challenges to include them? They should have their own competition to be totally fair to everyone.

At the 3:40 mark, you're showing a picture of Fayetteville, AR (where Maddy went to college and performed drag), but the comments Maddy made are in regards to his hometown, Lincoln, AR. This is further supported by him saying, "Fayetteville is a really amazing place in Arkansas. It's like a little bastion in the whole state" (source: Whatcha Packin') I also went to school in Fayetteville (long before Maddy), and while the state is pretty conservative, Fayetteville tries to be the opposite. The mayor has made many proclamations for the LGBTQ+ community, and they hold a large annual Pride parade that many people, even from neighboring states, attend. While there's still certainly room for growth, I at least wanted to make sure Fayetteville wasn't being misrepresented.

As someone, who lives in the DEEP SOUTH, and is dating a guy that is purely straight but does drag and LOVES it I'm all for straight people doing drag. Drag is a living and open community. Everyone is welcome. Maddy is a straight icon. He has to travel to Florida just to perform because people in my small town isnt very open. Even though we have a lesbian mayor, gay pride parades, drag brunches, and drag performances. But for a blue collar guy who is very much a mans man - he would be ostracized for it. So sadly he does it in secret. If more straight men knew they could do this it could build a bridge. Drag queens have become the conservatives' boogeyman (bc they suffer from brain rot aka Fox news, etc media).

I want to address the first few bits on how the fandom reacted to Maddy being revealed. People said that the spot should have been "given" to her or that the spot should have been "given" to a drag queen that "deserved" it. Like. This is a competition and that you audition for. Sure there can be, and is, some production involved in the choosing of queens, but you still have to compete. As a gay man i will say that we can be some of the most divisive, uninclusive, gate keeping people on Earth. Like we want to keep our space so much ours that we will push everyone else out. Inclusion can be made so exclusionary and we have to watch out for that. LEts not turn into the people we fight against every day.

I had a drag daughter which was a straight male (years before Maddy get on DR). Even though now he understands himself as a bisexual man, at the time he firmly believed he was a straight man; he started doing drag bc of a workshop an ex girlfriend attended to and she started putting him in drag. One of his first times ever was a "Marilyn Manson" drag, where he dressed up as Marilyn Monroe, with her beauty mark and the vibrant red lips, but kept a beard like Charles Manson and drew an X in his forehead. That blew me away, I knew I HAD to put him under my wings. So, ever since I adopted him, I taught: you're in a queer space as a straight male. Don't be surprised if people are not comfortable around you, it's not personal, you represent peoples that are very harmful to our community. So, learn about our history, hear what we say, watch us with attention. You can be a drag queen, but first of all you need to learn and respect the queer community. As many trans woman, I really think he discovered his bisexuality because of drag. Does that mean every straight male is a bisexual male waiting for his breakthrough? No. But yes, I believe if straight men learn to step into our home, our artform, with respect and knowing he's not the rptagonist there, it's totally okay.

I think the way Ru kept repeatedly trying to out him as "secretly gay" over and over was so disgusting and very dissapointing. One joke would be funny, but it kept on. I have been questioning and wrestling with my gender for a while now, not fully uncomfortable presenting cis female but not fully fitting it either. I spent so long defining and defending my asexuality that in my head, it couldn’t be a real gender “thing” if I couldn’t find a label that works for me. It is nice to see someone who isn’t “part” of the queer community in terms of labels proudly be an ally, a member, and open that gender presentation is sometimes a little 🤷🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️ even if “cis” is the best word for you
