Wreckage of USS Nevada found in Pacific Ocean

The USS Nevada, an iconic U.S. battleship that survived the attack on Pearl Harbor, has been found in the Pacific Ocean. The ship's wreckage was located 65 nautical miles southwest of Pearl Harbor more than 15,000 feet below the water's surface. Video provided by SEARCH and Ocean Infinity shows the wreckage.

One of my Great Uncles served on her during WWII. He was a signalman. Was on it during the bombing of Pearl Harbor through the end of the war. They served in the Atlantic as well as the Pacific.

Tank? Why a tank? Well, apparently a tank was set on the deck for Operation Crossroads where atomic bomb Able was detonated and the Nevada was a test subject. It survived, but was highly radioactive. It was decommissioned on 29 August 1946, towed to the location where they found it, and the navy used it for target practice where it was finally sunk. The ship capsized when it sank and the turrets fell out and are scattered around the wreck, the bow and stern were also ripped off, while the bulk of the ship lies upside down.

It didn't sink from war, from my understanding they sank it in 1948 during gunfire practice (while unmanned). Although it was torpedoed and repeatedly received gunfire by the Japanese on December 7, 1941 it was repaired and served throughout the war. It was decommissioned in 1946 and then served as gun (target) practice until 1948.

all the men killed on board Nevada in war had their remains either buried at sea or interred in military grave sites. No human remains were left on board when she sank.

The navy was the backbone of the armed forces, until the Nevada showed that it could stay afloat after an atomic attack, but would be deadly radioactive. Then the air force became the backbone.

@@MrChickennugget360 yes it was one of the early marks of T26, used as a test subject to see how US armour stood up the the test, it would be worth recovering as there are no more T26's left.
