WWE classifies their wrestlers as 'independent contractors' yet they control every aspect of their professional life and parts of their personal life. It's so great that AEW is starting to become big because it finally gives wrestlers another option. Ever since WCW folded, WWE has been tightening the vice around their wrestlers. I hope AEW continues to grow and grow. Maybe then WWE will be forced to stop treating their workers like pack animals.

To be fair, John Cena's charity work- particularly with The Make A Wish Foundation, prevented him from becoming a Heel. When you do a lot of work with and for young children and become an icon for them, you kind of pigeon hole yourself into a specific role which limits your versatility amongst audiences outside of that age group.

I agree with majority of AEWs practices as in the freedom they give their wrestlers and although, you're bound to still be injured from this sport as its taxing on your body over time, my biggest would be putting a ban or a hold on deadly moves. Its not to put a limit on the wrestlers and creativity but a responsibility on their lives/health at least to protect them best without totally taking away freedom liberty.
@zw3565
@zw3565 2 жыл бұрын
I do understand not letting wrestlers do independent shows or MMA fights same reason they can get hurt. Not letting them use Twitch or other social medias to make extra money just seems wrong. Plus doing those things can let fans get extra access to the wrestlers that you just can't get from them being on TV once or twice a week.

There is some amusing ideas regarding what wrestlers were able to do in the WWWF, WWF, WWE, and the now WW (notice how the initials keep getting shorter?). The McMahon family business has always been about running the competition out, and establishing dominance. Through much of the 1980s and up to now, the performers that were the draws could not perform under any other organization. There was a time that the WWF of the 80s and 90s did establish working relations with AWA and USWA. This was because the WWF wanted certain talent from those shows to perform in their ring. However, they weren't able to pull those talent in completely. They would pull that talent in, book them so much they rarely had time to perform in their home regions, and then the fans would tune in to the WWF to watch their favorite stars essentially killing that federation. Feds like the AWA and USWA also didn't get a "two way door" treatment from this. At first, there would be statements about where the performers came from, but as the weeks went on, less commentary was given on the federations they came from. Also, WWF signed talent didn't do any actual wrestling in those organizations. They would maybe at most do a promo, or run interference. I should also point out that the Ted Turner era of WCW (which was originally the name of the weekly NWA television show on TBS) adopted much of the same business ideologies that Vince McMahon used. Turner bought up the promotions run by Jim Crockett in the mid-south regions. This was rather lucrative since it came with the Four Horsemen, Steiner Bros., The Varsity Club, and a variety of other talented stars that the WWF overlooked, but were still top tier wrestlers. The WCW title...that beautiful World title belt that the WWF slapped their attitude era WW onto...was actually the NWA World Title. It was designed to replace the belt we see today...which was used in TNA, but ultimately stripped of because of terrible underhanded business practices. The AEW is a promotion that harkens back to the days of what many regionals were like, that still exist today. A promotion where the wrestlers have more control over their personal IP (their personal marketable brand, if you will), and given freedom to work in other promotions...as long as they sport some sort of "AEW" recognition in their appearances. The schedule that they implement is also incredibly beneficial. The talent doesn't need to kayfabe. They don't need to work house shows. They can perform elsewhere to build the reps if they need to. They get to make money off of their personal brand. And this last thing is the most important...can perform in a manner that is PPV level on a weekly basis without destroying their bodies because they have to wrestle 4 to 6 days a week all over the country. As long as the AEW maintains this business practice...they will be a force to be reckoned with, and may be the shot in the arm that the industry has been so desperately needing in the last 20 years or so.

@Herry Valenzuela Dude, I'm on your side. I agree with you that WWE is full of flaws and should probably fall. I want AEW to succeed and offer as good a Wrestling product it can. I don't have "rainbow coloured glasses". I'm just pointing out that -1 WWE being an effective monopoly right now makes it harder for it to fail. Even if the product is terrible, most people will still watch it since "it's the wrestling they know". WWE is currently synonymous with western wrestling so it will always have the easier time getting money and getting seen. and -2. WWE, with cash deals from Fox and Saudi Arabia, is staying solvent. It still makes a lot of revenue from merch and sales. Enough people are still watching to keep it profitable. When I say the company will remain standing, I'm not saying it as a blind fanboy. I'm saying it as a defeated one. Knowing that monopolies are sadly self sustaining. I'm happy to be proved wrong here.

Not always. The biggest part of WWE's success in the 90s was that while the wrestlers had a modicum of creative control over their characters, Vince McMahon would only let them go so far. 1. Cursing - The use of profanity was outright restricted since 2008, although it has been allowed on periodic occasions. Since 2022, talents and commentators have been allowed to express the freedom of speech, but don’t use very strong profanity because you are seen on a public broadcast. 2. Banned terminology - Until 2022, it was a very well known fact that WWE heavily micromanaged *ALL* areas of the production, which meant talents were strictly prohibited from saying or mentioning certain words, but it also extended to what the announcers can say too. This also extended to micromanaging all talents’ social media presentations 24/7. 3. Merchandise - There are some restrictions on releasing merchandise, although Sami Zayn did release some tee shirts to support the people of Syria 4. Direct contact with the boss - Triple H and Shawn Michaels do encourage on how the door is always open at any time 5. Move set - Some maneuvers may still be banned for safety reasons, but Chad Gable shouldn’t be using the Diving Headbutt if it’s gonna go wrong at times. 6. MMA - In 2023, the WWE and Endeavor merger went into full effect once TKO Group Holdings acquired both WWE and UFC. UFC star Michael Chandler appeared at Raw in 2024 in Anaheim, California where he notably called out Connor McGregor 7. Blood or blading - When Triple H was allowed full control as Head of Creative, blood was allowed, with a prime example in March 2024 when The Rock gave Cody Rhodes a heinous beating in the rain, which busted open Rhodes at the end of a Raw broadcast 8. Twitch - WWE would officially sign a partnership with Twitch to allow talents to use the platform. Dakota Kai and Mia Yim do use the platform, whilst Kai and Zelina Vega have been hosting a podcast together, which has garnered plenty of laughs. 9. The ability to work independent shows - In 2023, Shinsuke Nakamura would defeat Great Muta in Japan as part of Muta’s retirement tour. However in early 2024, WWE would begin to partner with other organizations such as Game Changer Wrestling where Shayna Baszler and Charlie Dempsey would take part at the Bloodsport event. In addition, NXT names have also been allowed to take part in Booker T’s promotion Reality of Wrestling. 10. Creative freedom - When Triple H was appointed as Chief Content Officer, it did come to an extent that he would allow talents to use creative freedom, thus erasing all the micromanaging of everything.
