GOING SOLO | Tag Team Wrestlers Best Singles Runs!
Historically in wrestling, working as part of a tag team has been seen as an entirely different art to that of being a singles performer. And this is exactly why we’ve had lifelong partnerships over the years such as was the case with The Road Warriors, The Rock ‘n’ Roll Express, and The Wild Samoans. Of course, in more recent times, the idea of a long-term tag team has largely been destroyed. But that doesn’t mean when those partners inevitably break up, there can’t be a silver lining. Yes, on some occasions one member of a former team will go on to have great success as a singles star. But what are the best examples of this? Well; that’s exactly wat we’re going to be looking at today. So, join us as we take a deep dive into Going Solo: Tag-Team Wrestler’s Greatest Singles Runs.

Honorable mentions: 1. Jeff Hardy. Yes, he and brother Matt both had successful singles and tag careers. Both even held the world title in Total Nonstop Action. But because Jeff was also WWE and World Heavyweight Champion in WWE, I am going with him. 2. Johnny Nitro aka John Morrison. After the breakup of MNM with Joey Mercury, John would go on to win championships in WWE, Lucha Underground, and Impact. These include the WWE Intercontinental title, Impact World title, and LU World title. 3. Eddie Edwards. After the American Wolves split in Impact, Edwards became a Triple Crown Champion, having already held the tag team titles with Davey Richards but now winning the world and X-Division title.

Yes I loved the Hart Foundation and Jim the anvil Neidhart but Bret just looked so cool and his technical ability was never in doubt. JBL wasn't really a tag team wrestler anyway. He became a tag team wrestler because he was the 90s version of Baron Corbin. Vince liked him but he was useless at everything. The JBL character worked so well because Vince just let him go out there and be himself and he's such a giant douchebag anyway, it made for a great heel character.

Yeah, except it wasn’t a success. His entire solo run, much like Cobin’s later on, had ratings tanking, ticket sales down, and everyone clammering to get rid of him. The only thing JBL’s soli run shows is the secret to being ass at what you do and have look like sucess because you kiss Vinnie Mac’s ass while stroking his ego.

I never got the chance to watch WCW in its prime, cause I didn't get into wrestling till 2003, long after WCW went defunct. However, if there is a missed opportunity that bugs me till today, it's the fact that we never got a proper Rick vs Scott match to definitively answer who is the better brother. The Steiner Brothers had a tough reputation, and their gimmick works cause there was some legitimacy to their real personas. The funny thing was that initially, people were pegging Rick to be the breakout star, but as it turned out, both brothers were able to carve out unique looks, and were able to back it up with their charisma (although for Scott, that is debatable, but you can't deny he had a unique vibe as Big Poppa Pump). Cause of this, a match between the two would not only be good marketing, but WCW botched it by needlessly getting Buff Bagwell involved. One match was all the fans (myself as a late one included) wanted, but we quite got it. And probably never will, cause both Steiner Brothers are in their 60s, and neither are in any shape to wrestle a full match any more.

Talent wise Edge has nothing over Christian! In the ring and on the mic Christian has always been more capable. It's just that Vince gave everything to Edge and held Christian down. You'll definitely be a bigger "star" if you're given Money in the Bank, King of the Ring and Royal Rumble wins like it's candy! Christian definitely deserved way more than what he was given in WWE. Hope to see him comeback for a big program with and against Edge. These two deserve a Wrestlemania match!

When Steiner went full on roided out he ruined his potential. He had the size, moves and was popular and with just a little more hard work he could have gotten into the WCW World Title picture. Could, there is never any guarantee. But he as a heel against Sting etc in WCW would have been a breath of fresh air. When he was Big Poppa Pumped up he had no flexibility, no speed and basically had three moves. At least his nephew may finally get to the World/Universal/Raw Championship level. 🤷‍♂️

Here are a few honorable mentions: Christian Cage: In wwe he was a mid card, but when he apoeared in impact wrestling, he proved that he was main event material, by winning the NWA championship 2 times, and having great matches against AJ, Joe, Kaz and even Sting. Josh Alexander: An underrated pick but someone who proved himself. After his tag team with All ego ethan page ended, Josh began a successful singles career, going from winning the X division championship to winning the Impact world championship two times. His second reign was even better, as he became the longest reigning champion in the history of Impact wrestling. Prince Devitt: After he split from his tag partner Taguchi in njpw, he became the leader and founding member of Bullet Club, which would become the most influential faction in modern wrestling and lead to the birth of AEW. And when he signed with wwe, Devitt became Finn Balor and would become a two time nxt champion, 2 time IC champion, one time US champion, the first Universal champion and the leader of the Judgment day.

What about the Skyscrapers? That team appeared in WCW in 1989/1990 in three forms. The first form included Sid Vicious, the second a guy called Mark Calaway in real life. I think Mark also had a nice solo career later. 🙂

He was a solid 9/10 hell, reminded me of Rick Rude in some ways. Probably not the greatest but anyone who claims he didn't piss them off back in the day is lying.
