I've always loved the hot-potato-ing of the X-Division title imo. I always think of that tactic as "these competitors are just as good as each other, but one slip up and the other can take over and win the match" and is the ultimate way of putting two wrestlers on the same level, while also raising their stock since they're getting better and better with each match. Probably just a dumb explanation but I think it works well enough.
@phwildman1249 күн бұрын
Agreed! I had the exact same thought.

Given the skill of the Motor City Machine Guns it's pretty impressive that they have the same energy and athleticism now that they've had for about two decades now.
@Kaltagstar9613 күн бұрын
It's really insane that you get people having to change up their styles due to injury or age (Great Muta / Keiji Mutoh comes to mind) but The Guns are still one of the best tag teams in the world. I genuinely have no idea how they do it.
@aaronhurst437913 күн бұрын
@@Kaltagstar96 Wasn't one of them recently badly injured for like a year, too? Edit: Both actually - Sabin got an ACL injury in 2018, and Shelley announced a kayfabe retirement following an injury, also in 2018 (think this was what got me)

Kind of wild to see this show & then think that this weekend will be TNA Genesis 2025, which will have Kazarian fight in the pre-show match, while the Hardys are not only the current TNA Tag Champs but are both way, way, WAAAAYYYYYY better off (physically & mentally) than they were 14 years prior.

I haven't been following the product ( I dont have the channel in my area, unfortunately) Why is Kaz on the pre-show?
@Alsebra12 күн бұрын
@@TheBuddha337, I'm not entirely sure myself, but it may have something to do with both his age (he's 47...he's still in incredible shape, but he's gotta be winding down some) and the fact that he's got a championship match of his choice right now (so he's not likely to be working too hard, just in case he gets injured).

I remember watching TNA occasionally during this time, and one thing that always stuck with me was the Motor City Machine Guns/Beer Money Rivalry. Those two teams had such an amazing chemistry and put on some excellent matches on TV or PPV. Definitely two of the best tag teams TNA have had.

Jeff Hardy was the biggest merch mover in WWE from 07-09 outselling everyone including John Cena by a multiple times metric. Every kid in America wanted those multicolored ripped arm bands even non wrestling fans. When he went to TNA he immediately became the biggest babyface there. His heel turn broke those fans hearts. Had victory 2011 with sting never happened Jeff Hardy’s heel turn could’ve been looked back on as one of the best heel turns of the 2010s and it’s really under appreciated now because of how much victory road 2011 overshadows it. I was 16 going on 17 when this heel run was happening in 2011 and I was very much deep into both products and heavily invested in everything happening in WWE and TNA so Jeff turning heel crushed me and I didn’t even realize it was doing its job upsetting and annoying me so much. In 2015 when I was in wrestling school one of the other trainees and I were at the shows version of wrestlemania (which was sold out. About 400 people there. Biggest crowd I had ever seen in person before at that time.) and they had all of us young prospects sitting in our own section near the ring away from the fans and me and this trainee got some flak and told to show some respect because we got deep into a debate “was Jeff Hardy a good heel worker or not?” During the opening ceremony of “these young men represent the future of this business and we hope they all have long fruitful careers” and were just in our own little bubble “jeff Hardy was an awful heel” “I disagree he got the reaction he was supposed to get” “his matches were slow paced and boring” “they were meant to be that was intentional.” “Hey! If you two don’t stop stfu while they’re up there talking I’m gonna have you two running laps all night around the ring when the shows over.” 😅😂

I stuck through TNA's dark days from 2010 through around 2012-2013, and in hindsight, throughout that time period, it does seem like the X Division Title changed hands a lot. Alex Shelley, Chris Sabin, Kazarian, Jay Lethal, Robbie E, Doug Williams, Abyss, Brian Kendrick, Austin Aries all held the belt during that time. It seemed like every month or two, someone new was crowned champion. Obviously, back then watching it as a kid, it didn't feel that way.

Well, this feels like hell frozen over and this review feels somewhat properly timed for the biggest wrestling news. WWE and TNA Wrestling were the biggest rivals for most of the 2000s and early 2010s. Each company took shots at each other and it was like that ... UNTIL NOW! WWE and TNA Wrestling are now under a multi-year partnership. WTF?! Let me guess, AJ Styles might show up in TNA to beat Nic Nemith for the TNA World Heavyweight Champion before WrestleMania 41 now and Joe Henry beat Oba Femi to become NXT Champion at NXT Stand & Deliver: Las Vegas. This is just pure madness for two rival companies to now essentially be working together. It will surely cripple All Elite Wrestling now as they will struggle to stay in the top 3 wrestling promotions in America.

I was a TNA mark back in the early 2010s, and I don't actually think the X Division title changed as much as it may appear. It appears to have moved around a lot more only because Jay Lethal would constantly win the title and then immediately lose it which would pad the amount of reigns that a number of people had, especially Lethal himself. And when referring to the "you can't wrestle" chants during the Madison Rayne match, this was during a time when Madison Rayne was being shoved down everyone's throats despite being seen as a mediocre worker at best. The division was basically built around her for a full calendar year, and you would need to watch some of her other matches to see a real sampling of how mediocre she was, because outside of opponents like Mickie James who could carry her, she very rarely had a good match. So by this point, the fans were sick of her and wanted her to go away.

As a youngster who watched this show live with family on the computer, I wanna give my own two cents: 1. Hey Superstar is one of the best PPV theme songs for a wrestling PPV 2. The bit of immortal and fortune needing to win all the belts is FAR MORE funny than you let on, Brian. It wasn’t just that they wanted all the power, but that they wanted all the belts because it’ll help in Hogan’s court case. I’m not kidding, they said so in the segments leading into the show. Winning titles helps legal proceedings. I just wanna see them go up to a judge and present all the titles and the judge is like “my hands are tied. Hogan wins.” 3. Taz is not hornier than Lawler, but he is hornier than Vampiro in Lucha Underground’s commentary. 4. It’s annoying how Williams lost the TV title and was IMMEDIATELY sent back down the card. They spent months building him up, teasing dissension with Fortune. He leaves, beats Styles, then loses it a month later, gets screwed out of it no less and never interacts with any of Immortal and Fortune, not helped out that Fortune had a very rushed face turn a month later because they couldn’t get back the Main Event Mafia to wrestle Immortal, so they put in Fortune in the face position instead. What a waste. 5. People forget Victory Road was a strike with Jeff. He was high in Final Resolution. Then was high against Naito in the Tokyo Dome weeks later. Played a role in New Japan distancing from tna. Then the match with Sting. Not a good look for Jeff, especially when so much of Immortal was banking on him being the crown jewel. 6. Mr. Anderson vs Jeff Hardy is one of my favorite overbooked matches. The simple what the hell is going on feel with me, my brother and cousin was high in that match. Just a lot of fun.

normally hot potatoing doesnt work but in the case of tna it was among such a small group of guys passing it back and forth that it was more of each of these 3-4 guys could beat another on any given night. Similar to when nitro and hardy traded the ic title across 4 months and 4 reigns in 06 or miz-ziggler in 14 or miz-ziggler-shield in 2017

Even Joe Hendry said Kaz looks like Antonio Banderas. Even calling him "the dad from Spy Kids."

As someone who watched during this time, I will be honest it didn't really feel like the X Division belt was being swapped around all that much
