Do anyone know if any of the 4 TV's, particularly the one at the "lower left" was GE branded? WRGB (America's First Experimental TV Station in 1928 and Forth Commercially Licensed TV Station in 1942) was founded by General Electric years before they bought RCA to get control of NBC. The call sign stands for the initials of GE's engineer in charge of the station and has been the ONLY ONE they have used since 1942, making it The Oldest Call Sign in American TV. (it's a pity I haven't seen KYW's analog end in a Philco TV, since they founded the station, commercially licensed in 1941 or WNYW in a DuMont apparatus, as they founded that NYC station, commercially licensed in 1944)

Seems so long ago already. There was something eerie about watching the analog signals go silent though. Kind of like being on a sinking ship I guess.

Yes, rather blah for all 4 stations. In our area, they made a big deal about the switchover. Sad end of an era in my opinion, but others took it in stride.

@musicman0150 US. Amateur radio station call signs start with A, K, N, or W. Has NOTHING to do with their location. Only the number in the call sign indicates location. ex.: w1aw, New England k6nr, California, w4cgr, South Carolina. Although that's the official designation, any number call sign can be anywhere, especially due to the vanity call sign program and people who relocate are not required to change the number.

Reminds me of those epic first lines to William Gibson's Neuromancer: The sky was the colour of a television tuned to a dead channel.

Excellent demo of the analog signals shtting down. Rember though, all of the TVs shown will still work with VCRs, DVD units, game consoles and even analog cable. You can use a modulator to run the new game systems on these TVs, and some modulators will let you choose the channel(s) you want to show a specific unit, such as, VCR can be 27, DVD on 33 and yes; games with some modulatetors can go up into the 70 to 83 UHF band range.

Very cool video, I love to see videos like this. Did you notice that channel 10 and Channel 19 are the exact same programming just different channels. One is VHF Channel 10 and one is UHF Channel 19. Also did you notice that the TV in the upper right corner needs the tint adjusted. The fleshtones are yellow so everybody looks more like The Simpsons than human beings. Funny. Thanks for posting this video.

@bumtownv2 Not all American stations start with W. The stations east of the Missippi do start with W. The ones west start with K. That was how the FCC designated the stations call letters in order to basically split the east USA from the west USA. There is one acception. KDKA in Pitsburgh, AM radio 1220 and VHF channel 2; was the very first radio station to broadcast in the USA.
@FrancisLitanofficialJAPINOY5 жыл бұрын
musicman0150 Also Western USA and US territories in th Pacific used K and most of Eastern US and It’s US territories in the Caribbean uses W. NOAA Weather Radio call signs anywhere in the US either used K or W.

Thanks for that great video with the vintage tvs side by side. I managed to capture WRGB going off the air too, in a video I have on youtube, although the quality isn't that great at all. Thanks!
What channel were you still getting on the lower right TV? It looked like you still had some chnnels left active, however, on the lower left TV, when you were checking for channels, nothing was picked up. Did that extra channel sign off in between the time you were checking channels on the two big TVs?

I loved WXXA 23 as a kid before it turned to FOX. The played so many horror films, had Creature Feature weekends. Also played Kung-Fu marathons on weekends, and had Theater Bizarre late at night in which they'd run all films, uncut. Sucks man, TV is garbage these days. I watch youtube more than my television.

Some of the full-power tv networks in the PH have been using digital signals although most households use digital and/or analog CRT tv sets. Either by 2023 or a later year, they will completely shut off their analog transmitters.

If you still have old CRT televisions around, they are still usable with modulators and step down signal converters from HDMI to Composite Video to connect the modern cable boxes; fire sticks, Roku Boxes and more. There are modulators that will operate and any analog channel as a "closed" analog broadcast; meaning you will need a coax cable to enable this feature from modulator. Save those old TVs from being dumped into landfills.
