Matt We are a tiny bit divided in our theology. I don’t quite embrace your Reformed views but on this subject I am now in total agreement. For years I highlighted, underlined and annotated my study Bibles. What I found in looking back was that I had a very limited, selfish and somewhat tenuous grasp on the Faith. I began to collect high quality Bibles and became evermore reluctant to record my ignorance. Of late I have realized that I was actually recording the growth and deepening of my walk with God. Now I only hope the Lord grants me enough time to leave a Scripture legacy to my children and grandchildren. If I may .... a humble suggestion .... I’ve started dating my entries so that in the future my audiences might have some idea of what influenced me to write, highlight or underline. I have accumulated some really nice Bibles .... too many I think and I try to pick what I will write and to whom. Though I like the idea of just one Bible I have lots of people to leave them to. Do you have any suggestions for me? Perhaps a Bible dedicated to each person?? What great video! I am sharing it with many. Yours, in His Holy Name, MikeinMinnesota, ReFIRE!🔥Ministries.

Hi: I have been a writer-in, note-taker, highlighter of my Bible since I first accepted Christ (1993). I lost track of how many Bibles I've marked at around #4 or 5. I'm wa-a-y beyond 4 or 5. I transfer my most important markings to my latest "everyday reader" (currently an NASB comfort print pew Bible) I've printed out on plain paper things that caught my attention, and I glue them into my Bible. I handwrite on end pages things from "the old wiseguys" {Tozer, Chambers, etc.} I also have the bad habit of being a "finger-licker" to turn pages. Generally, an everyday reader Bible will last me 3 or 4 years, then I research and find a new Bible. I have various study Bibles I use for home study, but my everyday reader has to be larger print, portable, and well made. I hope this helps. God bless.

While I take notes I don’t write in my Bibles. First of all I have many Bibles so some day they will be passed on so those people will like them much more if I have not scribbled in them. Also I find that if I highlight a text each time I go back to that section my eye is drawn back to the same text I emphasized the first time through. If it is blank I may find some other emphasis. Finally by taking notes in a notebook instead of in my Bible I do not have to be so careful and neat. Keeping a notebook also lets me bring in notes from multiple translations and study Bibles.

My dad is a bible teacher though and it wasn’t that I thought it was wrong to mark up a bible, it was that there was no note taking space. I got a journaling bible 3yrs ago and also learned how to glue or tape pages in and now I have some sections that are so marked up there isn’t any spare space! I love having my notes right there. I still have lots of blank areas but that just tells me I have lots of learning to do.

My daily reading Bible is a really old second hand copy of the ASV 1901. So I don’t write or highlight it because I want longevity of it. But I take many digital notes in Logos, some 3,200+ saved passages categorised into 340+ notebooks. And about 80,000+ words of notes that I have typed into Logos. One day I’ll export it and print a physical backup for daily reflection.

OK, this persuaded me. I've never written in my Bibles in my life except to correct typos, mark mistranslations, and mark in my KJV where the additions to Esther and Daniel go (though none of it for the reasons you argued against). The arguments for it were strong enough to amend my practices.

I realize this is an older video, but I just wanted to share something that helped me immensely. The Word of God is holy. It is the holiest of the holy. The book it's printed in? Not so much. The pages, the binding, the ribbons, the book itself.... not really holy. The WORDS as they were spoken or seen or written... those are the holy part. There's nothing we can do to change those words. We cannot deface something that was given thousands of years ago. A book - a physical book - isn't holy. The Word inside it is holy, and we are meant to engage with it in a way that is meaningful to us.

That's a good way to look at it. I have LOTS of Bibles and I don't know why but I'm a stickler when it comes to them. I suppose that when I would get my hands on a used Bible it would often have notes based on very basic things and sometimes based on religious ties to Catholicism or JW. I just like it clean so I can hear God speak to me and I usually tend to give those Bibles away. I just bought the smallest pocket Bible in my entire collection by Christian Art Publishers from Amazon for $20 It's my new Take Everywhere Bible than to lug around a backpack with my Thompson Chain. You should look into it, it's KJV with both Testaments. It's a very beautiful, solid Bible about the same size as the Gideon Bibles they used to hand out at school, I'm going to buy more to hand out.
@ricev70715 жыл бұрын
Well, when I look at an old Bible and I look at their notes, some good, but some verses are highlighted to fit a certain narrative or agenda based on religion so that's why I'm careful, I certainly don't want to lead anyone astray! But I do have a seperate KJV I use for verses I do not want to forget so it's my highlighted Bible. My Thompson Chain is full of stuff in it so I don't need to write or highlight anything in it. If people want to write notes in their Bible, I highly suggest Wide Margin KJV Bibles. It has wide spaces toward the edge of the page used to write notes in. I try to commit what I receive to memory. But Thank you.
@ShadowRaven666693 жыл бұрын
I do both. I have an esv interleaved edition that I use as my main study bible and I start the initial thought that scripture triggered in the bible, then link it to my notebook where I finish the thought and write any commentary of my own. I'm not giving that one bible away and that's the only bible that I write in/highlight. While it's not necessary to write in and highlight your bible, it is helpful for a lot of people, especially if you color code by topic. A pastor I used to know once said that he can tell how seriously people study scripture by how long it takes them to destroy their bible.

Good evening from the Philippines, Pastor Matt. I actually have been watching your bible reviews and I have developed a certain liking to your bible reviews. For one, I noticed majority of your reviews are the ESV. So I got curious about it. Long story short, so I got a complimentary copy of the ESV Diadem with Apocrypha from Cambridge. And when I got to start reading casually from it, I got hooked with the kind of language ESV has. Now, prior to this I have been a NABRE user from my elementary days up to college and theology days. My question now is: I know based on my own observation that ESV is definitely essentially literal, and the NABRE that I have been using before is actually a balance of formal and functional equivalence - I don't know if there is such translation that is as effectively scholarly like the ESV yet strikes like a song in the ears? If you know what I mean, Pastor Matt.

That's what a notebook is for!! I don't write in any of my Bibles. If someone needs a Bible, I have a few nice ones they can choose from, but me, I wouldn't want somebody else's coloring book, I might as well save up and buy my own. Also, I have too much reverence for God's Word to write in it. Look at the Muslims, they don't write in their Qurans so why should we?? Would you write Bible passages on the side of your church building with spray paint?!? I didn't think so. In the same way, we must revere the things we use to worship God. God says be perfect because your Father in Heaven is perfect. Use a notebook for heavens sake!! If you had a valuable antique Bible, would you write in it??
@robertjacksonjr32686 жыл бұрын
That bible he has open in this video is meant to be written in, see the wide margin. Bibles come in differnt types. My grandmother wrote in her bible and at her funeral service, her pastor read some of her thoughts that she wrote. It was like hearing her for the last time. That bible is now a family heirloom. No one's going to write in an antique bible, when they can buy a Journaling bible or wide margin. Also the writting on the side of a church is a bad comparison.

You aren’t adding words when you write in your bible, your simply writing thoughts from the word, not making “new scripture”. Silly idea.
