I have had the good fortune of reading Minor Detail by Adania Shibli and I can't praise her book enough. It's a gift to be able to capture multitudes in the smallest of spaces. It's immensely gratifying to read books that contain such precision of language where not a word feels wasted and the emotion resulting is all the more striking for it.

I was also lucky enough to read Adania Shibli‘s book „Eine Nebensache“ (this is the German Titel of it) and I completely agree with you! It's always amazing what literature can achieve. Ironically, I became aware of the book after the awarding of a book prize to the author in autumn 2023 during the Frankfurt Book Fair was canceled and the book suddenly disappeared from the displays of many bookstores.

it amazes me how much reaction the word Palestine alone provokes in the comment section; it makes the peculiar description of the author even more palpable! When you start to write about Palestine, regardless of where you come from you start to measure words, you become very careful as everything needs to be documented and as much as possible freed from emotional pain and distress, not only for your own safety, also to not ignite a storm from the other part burning the message you try to deliver!

It's because the recognition of the existence of Palestinians proves that it wasn't a land without a people for a people without a land. It's interesting that so many colonial powers have denied the existence of groups of people throughout history so as to deny their collective heritage and justify wiping them out. The indigenous people of Australia were also declared to not exist. They were considered non people so as to justify their genocide. Zionists cannot deal with the legitimization of Palestine because it exposes their criminality. It brings to light what they did in 1948.

Such a complex interview! That construction of narratives shifted into broken got me thinking!

I understand better now why Tolstoy in his _War and Peace_ ended up deciding he must start earlier than he anticipated. I wish I had access to those epic poems from the seventh century.

Thank you. 😔 Stories matter...and all have certain bias and nuance whether fiction or non-fiction. One must always question the who and why and political climate of all written history.

Historiography refers to the study of how history is written and recorded, acknowledging that historical accounts are always shaped by the biases, perspectives, cultural contexts, and personal experiences of those who write them. It recognizes that no historical narrative can be truly objective, as writers inevitably bring their own interpretations, cultural lenses, and subjective viewpoints to their historical accounts. This concept emphasizes that historical writing is not a neutral, purely factual process, but a complex act of interpretation influenced by the historian's background, social context, political beliefs, and available sources. Note that how an individual interprets the above description of historiography can reveal whether theyre willing to acknowledge personal bias when giving their own narative of the past or present.

agree absolutely on the personal verge every narrative has and yet it is very special when there is a common agreement in pretending your story has no right to be at all as you do not exist in the eyes of that group to keep their story running.
