One may like or dislike Cradle of Filth in terms of the band's musical style, but regarding the lyrics, Dani is definitely in a league of his own. I have never met such talent, knowledge and creativity in a (successful) attempt to convey a gothic infused story of a figure like the countess Bathory. That's the thing about Cradle, you have to put a lot of energy into understanding the lyrics and orchestration of the songs, but that is what that makes them unique. The lyrics may be rightfully considered as an instrument in its own right. Thank you so much for your insightful analysis and for clearing some of the more difficult aspects of the song, I can now fully appreciate it. Please keep up the good work, I look forward to your next Cradle song interpretation.

I remember over 20 years ago, when I was studying in the beautiful Gothic city of Toruń in Poland, I listened to Cruelty and the Beast for the first time at night, several times. I screwed up the night just before the exam ;) By the way, Elizabeth Bathory was the niece of the Polish King Stefan Batory. It's great to listen to you, and I also learn English. Greetings from Poland :)

Great analysis! I love how Elizabeth is both frightening as well as fascinating, and how this ties into the idea of the Byronic hero. This reminds me - your character Yngvar is also based on the Byronic hero concept, and I think he has this in common with Elizabeth. His life is both terrifying yet fascinating, and he also has a lot of wisdom.

Loved this breakdown - wonderful work as ever. It's always been a favourite of mine from their whole catalogue. Interestingly, there's some thought that although Erzsebet almost certainly did act on crimes to an extent the scale of them and the dark nature of them were highly exagerated for political gain and a power grab by the Hapsburgs among others in the void after her husband's loss. Intriguing fact and delicious fiction either way.

This song was one of the tunes that got me into Cradle back in 2009 though the original recording had a terrible mix but when the re-mistressed version came out, it made me a Cradle fan again. With that out of the way, you did an excellent job by covering the lyrics and the story Dani tells in this song and how it relates to literature. If you want to analyze more bands, I suggest Alesana. They use a lot of literature in their "On Frail Wings Of Vanity and Wax" and "The Emptiness" records.

Thank you very much! It never crossed my mind at the time that the origin mix was bad (when I first heard COF I was too young, and later on I was too used to their music to think about it XD) until the re-mistressed version came out and realized how much better that album can be.
