Victor, thanks for releasing these wonderful and informative commentaries. I’ve watched so many gay themed films I would never have known about if you had not recommended them. I’m a 70 year old gay guy. I think Heart Stopper is my favorite show of all time. A relationship like the two boys have is only something I could only dream about when I was young. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve broken down and cried with joy while watching this. Please keep up your wonderful work. You have a devoted fan in me.

Heartstopper is also my favorite. I would describe it as wholesome. It's the anti-Euphoria. In the first season there's no nudity, no drug use, no alcohol abuse, no infidelity, no promiscuity and the parents are good people who are supportive. It doesn't paint a picture of the world as it is but rather the world as we'd like it to be. It's pure comfort food and that's why I love it.

Red white and royal blue just made me love the book even more. I love having two versions of the same story now. You know, just watching your video Victor, it strangely struck me (after 44 years of knowing and being) that I'm so, so very thankful to be Gay .... wouldn't have any other way! Love your video summaries of what's coming to screen soon, just have to wait for them to come down under to Australia! PS. Call me schmaltzy, I watched "Red, White and Royal Blue" last night and for some banal reason it both touched my heart and made my 58 year old heart smile! I think it made me reflect, how far we have come toward achieving greater visibility and acceptance in my years of life - I'm so relieved that young gay folk can see such positive representations of themselves reflected in film and television. Sadly, when i was 15 all that i had access to was the movie 'Cruising' and it was NOT a positive experience .... oh, how wonderfully far we've come! Keep up the good work mate!

There are a whole lot of us lgbtq citizens out here raising children nowadays. Our lives are interesting, but not filled with coming out angst/struggle or tragedy and melodrama. It would be nice to see some movies focus on us middle aged family folk, how our kids navigate having gay parents, how we deal with schools and other kids parents, what our kids see in the news and how it affects them, etc. Interesting selections though! I’ll definitely hit some of them up where/when I can find them.
@Dallas4X Жыл бұрын
Your point is a good one. Did you watch The Fosters series? Admittingly a little dramatic at times but it did show a messy complicated family life where the characters were not straight out of Leave it to Beaver.
@broddr Жыл бұрын
I recently bought a Festival pass for Atlanta’s LGBT film festival-Out on Film which occurs prior to National Coming Out Day. And I was thinking along similar lines. While coming out films are good, I don’t want them to be 50%+ of what’s happening. More films about queer families, teachers, and how about some mystery and sci fi movies? We’ll certainly exist in the future too.
@stueeyphoenix Жыл бұрын
Interesting that people have gone through the difficulties of making a film to represent your LGBTQ+ COMMUNITY YET YOU HAVE DONE NOTHING TO REPRESENT YOUR STRUGGLE AS A GAY PARENT except complain that you have not been represented in film. Why don't you be the person to change that instead of moaning about it. It could make you a better person and role model for your children when you are seen doing something about it rather than expecting it be done to please you. You may find yourself feeling less entitled and be happier as a result
@StarskyHugh Жыл бұрын
@@stueeyphoenix What an unnecessarily hostile response. The OP simply stated "it would be nice to see" different versions of LGBQTI+ representation that break out of the traditional mold of tragedy and melodrama and I agree. There was no complaint, merely what they hoped to see. Late 1990's/Early 2000's representation of LGBQTI folk have this rampant tragedy-esque ideology built into the story, as if this is the inevitable reality for anyone in the queer community. It is such a tiresome trope and we have come so far (and have a long way to go) that these continually sad or hopeless stories are mind-numbingly boring. This criticism is well known and often meme'd about in queer media. Gay/Bi/Lesbian couples can lead sad and difficult lives, sure. But they can also lead banal and unextraordinary lives. OP was commenting on I think the multitude of unique perspectives that LGBTQI+ representation and stories can potentially take the form of. My hot take is that the directors and story tellers that continue to display the tiresome tropes of queer folk in tragic/melodramatic and often highly sexualised ways were repressed and use the story medium as a way to vent. While fair, it would be great to see more young, empowered, fresh and crazy perspectives to push queer media in a new direction. Enough of the tragic ending, one has to die, star-crossed lovers but never quite. I want to see a story about a queer couple living in the 2020 and beyond. Lord knows sexuality would be the LEAST of their problems.

It's so good to see you back! You were missed. 🥰 Hard pass on "Passages." It's why I don't read any E. Lynn Harris books or others who write about bisexual love triangles. I'll have to go back and read "Aristotle & Dante" novel because I don't remember it being particularly "gay," seemed more like a bromance to me but I could be misremembering it🤔. I will go support the film on the 8th if at all possible. Going to pass on "Strange Way of Life," I'm still feeling some kind of way about "Brokeback Mountain" 🤣 Another hard pass on "Pretty Red Dress" and "Cassandro." I appreciate your thorough synopsis of the films but I'm going to take a pass on the rest of these, they all have that "important" feel about them and that usually means either a melancholic ending or a tragic ending. Of course I watched and loved both "Heartstoppers" and was very pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed "Red, White & Royal Blue" even though I didn't enjoy the book.

I wish films like these wouldn’t be so hard to see after their film-festival appearances. It would sure be great if one of the streaming services or film distributors would snap these up at the film festivals and get them in front of the public while there’s still buzz about them online. An acquaintance of mine made a film (not a gay-themed film) that was screened at a number of festivals…like a year ago. It has since disappeared. It has never played near where I live so I’ve never seen it. I asked if he could send me a copy to watch, but he refused, telling me to wait until it hits theaters. It’s been so long that I can’t even remember the name of the film. He’s stopped talking about it on social media, instead talking about new projects. I’m afraid the film is just gone now. Glitter & Doom looks really cool, by the way. I love love love the Indigo Girls, and I similarly adore Tig Notaro. I’m pretty excited about Pedro Pascal and Ethan Hawke, too. Aristotle and Dante really does have some amazing names attached to it - Veronica Falcón is amazing, and I love Luna Blaise, Eva Longoria, and Kevin Alejandro 😍 as well!

Sorry to tell you that you did not understand All of Us Strangers, this is all about death, all characters are dead, the parents, the son and lover. They died in different times and for different reasons, the parents died in a car crash, the son died of aids and the lover (neighbour) died of loneliness, alcohol and drugs. In a certain way the structure of the plot is, in a certain way, like "Huis Clos" by Jean Paul Sartre, where all characters meet after they all died in order to resolve their problems when they were alive, although the story, the Leitmotiv and the ending are different. Nevertheless one cannot say that the characters finds out that his parents are alive when he'd thought they were dead. No one's alive here at all, they are all very dead for a long time.

One step at a time my sweetie, you want big projects and talked about gay movies, needs to be nudged slowly. Otherwise, the move ends up two or three steps back. “Call me Your Name” led to “Bros” ($22m cost + $11m revenue) and A movie even Harry Styles couldn’t save “My Policeman” UK so no revenue figures, but in the minus for sure. And, “Brokeback Mountain” the huge winner ($14m = $178m worldwide) Three Oscars and then what ? and why ? Good to know what happened that shut the door from 2006 - iDK - but worthwhile knowledge so it can heeded for the next big hit- They at least need to make a profit, especially when big name stars are risking their careers, not bc of the gay nature but in non-profitable movies - a couple of losers and “see ya” Hollywood is fickle that way. Make the movie you want. With the newest iPhone and ability to rent gear inexpensively, show them that they’re missing a massive payday. Ed Burns did it with “The Brothers McMullen” His $238,000 grossed over TEN MILLION - that $238k would be 10% of that with new technology maybe less It was after all 1995 - the Stone Age

@@Updavidedattention You didn't understand me baby doll. What moves queer movies two or three steps back is making straight movies with gay characters. Honey the straights are not okay and never have been. We don't want to assimilate into their culture we want them to assimilate into ours. I want big queer projects, so long as they are queer projects. Assuming that being one of the good ones and assimilating will somehow benefit us in any way is not only historically demonstrably false, but its dangerous.
