The periodic table is separated into the s, p, d, and f block. We can use this information to write electron configurations.

People need to stop saying this is a bad video, you obviously need SOME background knowledge on the structure of atoms and orbital before you attempt to understand this. This video isn’t for beginners in Chem

Thank you for posting this! I've been having trouble remembering what order it all goes in. This really dumbed it down for me and helped me out! I feel a LOT more confidant about electron configuration now.

Good video but it would have helped to introduce the p block; perhaps using B as an example. Jumping straight to Mg leaves behind those people who find this stuff less intuitive. It's also a shame you didn't mention that once you hit the d block you have to backfill the 3rd shell before you continue with the 4th.

There is still one thing on this I do not understand, For example the Mg Configuration at the end, I know how to find 3s2, But I still do not understand where 1s2 2s2 2p6 comes from? I see he explained that everything starts with 1s, but unless I missed it, he didn't explain where the rest of it is coming from, and why.
@zombieslaer99226
@zombieslaer99226 6 жыл бұрын
Pure Bred Bass I can try to further explain it. The 1s2 comes from first period. Hydrogen and helium. As you go on in the periodic table electrons increase. Hydrogen has 1 helium has 2 and so on. 2s2 is 2nd period. 2p6 is still on the second period. So on and so on until you reach your element.

so when your writing an electron configuration of an element you just choose whichever element you want as long as it adds up to the same amount of electrons in the element that your writing it for?

I am also just starting to learn chemistry and according to many scientific webpages and my iphone app, your rules are not entirely accurate for transitional metals, for example, Cronium-CR, has the configuration of [Ar]3d5 4s1! and according to your rule it would've been [Ar]3d4 4s2, which is NOT the case!

HaVoC DJ Because each element has to include the electron configuration of each previous element in the periodic table. So, using his Mg example which has 12 electrons, if you backtrack to Na which has 1 fewer electron, then Na would be just like Mg but would end in 3s^1 (i.e. Na 1s^2 2s^2 2p^6 3s^1). Backtrack again to Ne, which has 10 electrons, and you're now in the p block so Neon's configuration ends in 2p^6 (check the column header, which is slightly out of camera frame but which should read p^6) so the full configuration for Ne is 1s^2 2s^2 2p^6. If you backtracked to F that would end in 2p^5 because it has 1 fewer electron than Ne. The sum of the superscript numbers (or the numbers immediately following the "^" sign) has to equal the total number of electrons for each element. I hope that all makes sense.

It's simple. Count how many elements are in each row, left to right. S block? Two. P block? Six. D block? Ten. F block? Fourteen. Then just find the element you need to find the configuration for. Go left ---> right and fill across until you get to the element you need to find the configuration for. It all just comes down to basic memorization, counting, and left-to-right.

I dont under stand this. my chem teacher only shows videos of other people teaching chem stuff and it makes not sense to me, also I asked for his help and I still dont understand this. This is like saying you want some numbers to stack to 3 but when you go down a row its a whole new number they dont want.Chem and all these stuff dont make any sense to most of us.
