I once had to Google some weird things for a story, like psychosis and stuff along with if dead bodies float in water. I think Google thinks I need help, and I think I was put on a list of some sort.

I researched psychosis, like, last week, but not for writing. I found an old note from June that was completely incoherent, remembered that my psychiatrist mentioned that I may be bipolar, and panicked. I ended up categorizing it as flight of thought, which, unfortunately, is most often seen in those who are bipolar. Edit: My mom came in with my lithium pill (I was prescribed lithium over a year ago) right after I finished this comment. Also, I just remembered that bipolar is more frequently found in writers than in the general population. HELP.

The thing about suddenly growing a strong attachment to a character you made to be killed off is so relatable. I was in charge of making 4 characters for a story I’m co-writing. All 4 would be killed by a cult to give the protagonist motivation to start their journey. Only problem? I really like all of them now. Feeling bad that these characters are gonna die is kinda the point, but what good is a heart wrenching character death if it makes the author cry more than the audience.
@coyotix
@coyotix Жыл бұрын
I'm writing an animated series and i'm so tempted to kill off the main character at the end, but i will CRY if i do that because every character in the series is just me projecting onto them. This is a character that i really relate to, and while I know that sacrificing him will be the best for his story arc, i just don't think i'm ready to let him go. And I want to be able to have both- kill him off and bring him back again, but then the sacrifice would fall flat. AGHH I HATE THIS
@user-LoomaMoth226

I had the same problem. I had a character who's dad was supposed to die as part of their backstory. But after I gave him a personality change I got so incredibly attatched that I ended up sparing him. He still dies in the 4th installment, but is brought back to life in the end. I can't end this dorky loving father. He needs to live.
@Local_custard
@Local_custard Жыл бұрын
imo the best character deaths are ones that feel like they matter. With a few exceptions, I find myself heavily disappointed when an author decides to bring a character back to life after the death was fully established. You could pour your love into them by trying to show why you love them so much. That way, the audience could cry with you
@user-LoomaMoth226
@user-LoomaMoth226 Жыл бұрын
@@Local_custard I see your point but the problem with that is if he wasn't brought back, the plot wouldn't work out like it should. Plus he wasn't really "dead" per say, he's a wizard and because his magic was stolen from an evil wizard he was turned to stone and the entire point of the book was for the main character to save him and defeat the evil wizard. it's a whole thing and i could go on hours explaining it

For me, it's not so much that I don't have control it's that I'm wrestling with another person for control. I'll try to direct them and they'll push back like "I wasn't done talking" or "I wouldn't do that." I once wanted my MC, a touch-starved, literally tortured kid, take an entire book before he could hug someone when I had wanted him to hug in the first 50 pages and throughout the story. I kept trying and he kept refusing. It ended up being so much better and impactful because of it but I had to rewrite so many other scenes because he either couldn't process things like a normal kid and he couldn't regulate his emotions as well. He still is a hot-tempered kid who doesn't always make the right decisions but he's not afraid or constantly angry like he was.

A good thing about having a sister as a nurse is I can ask her morbid questions, like, what does a corspe smell like? Or how long does it take for a person to die from blood loss?
@cryingchild4209
@cryingchild4209 Жыл бұрын
what are the answers? lol
@Amy_the_Lizard
@Amy_the_Lizard Жыл бұрын
@cryingchild4209 I would assume the answer to the first is 'rotting meat' but I haven't actually spent any time around unpreserved human corpses. As for the second, that depends entirely on how quickly blood is exiting the body, and where exactly the injury is located. For instance, if we're talking a slashed carotid artery it could take as little as a couple minutes or so if nothing's done to slow the bleeding down. This is because it's a major artery so the blood is under a lot of pressure and thus will exit the wound very quickly (specifically it will be squirting out in pulses in time with the heartbeat,) additionally the carotid arteries are the main supplier of blood to the brain, so if it's cut that blood isn't getting there, the brain will quickly run out of oxygen and die. Really, any artery cut is going to be bad because they're ALL pressurized (and they all splurt) but ones that aren't directly supplying blood to a major organ won't kill you as fast, as in those cases death is due to the drop in blood volume making it impossible to keep the blood going where it needs to, causing various tissues to slowly succumb to hypoxia. The same thing occurs with veins, though since they aren't pressurized they bleed much more slowly. This process is referred to as hypovolemic shock and begins to occur when you lose 15% of your blood, though at that stage its still pretty mild and you wouldn't be looking at organ damage yet. At around 40% you'll be looking at serious organ damage or death. Interestingly, it can usually be treated with just IV fluid to get the blood volume back to a normal level, as you can still function pretty well with a lot fewer red blood cells than normal, though obviously if too many of them or gone you'll need a transfusion. This long explanation was brought to you by a combination of my anatomy class and my extensive research to depict blood loss accurately in my rather violent fantasy writing (the reason I know so much about the carotid artery in particular is due to needing to know if a character could feasibly stab someone before dying from having their throat slit.)

I used to love writing when I was in middle school, I’ve made countless Google Docs of fantasy stories with characters and lore of my own. But I deleted every single one of them because they were cringy and I believed I was never going to finish them. I am in college now and have long since lost any talent of writing I have had, and I deeply miss my many unfinished, two chapter long novels. So to any artist out there who took the time to read this: keep your unfinished projects, don’t throw them away. Even if it amounts to nothing, it’s always nice to look back on it and get new inspiration. Your future self will thank you.

But suddenly character A is put in life-threatening danger to where character B saves them, realizing that they still love them! 10:54 i think theres a middle-grade novel like this called Project Mullberry by Linda Sue Park. in-between chapters (or every few, i havent read the book in a while), the author has a conversation with the main character about what's currently going on in the story, and the main character actually inspires the author to finish the story after they start losing motivation. it's about the main character and her best friend doing a project for the state fair, and the main char's mom suggests some kind of worm because she used to raise them when she was a young girl in Korea. but the main character feels that all the other kids are doing traditional "American" projects, while she's doing..well, worms. I relate too much to 9:45. I once planned a story up to two and half instalments, creating a whole fictional subcontinent and 100 years of history just to provide a background to the small town that the high school setting was in, with a wide cast of uniquely designed characters with thick, fluffy backstories and clashing personalities _all_ for the intention of (progressively) killing off 90% of them in the last act of the first book. I did this because the majority of the story would've been regular high school bs with a military theme until that point and I wanted a real _gut punch_ to emphasise the harshness of the world, which was so effective I haven't touched the project since.

Speaking of Common Writing Advice That Actually Sucks, your story doesn't need to have some profound message or moral, atleast not when you first conceptualize it. Don't get me wrong, if you have a message you wanna share with the world by writing a story that's great, more power to ya! But don't stress over whether your story is Inspiring Enough or Philosophical Enough or anything like that. Personally I've had better success developing a story first and letting a message come to me as I work on it, and if one never does, no biggie! You wouldn't believe how long I spent not writing cuz I couldn't come up with profound enough moral, instead of just coming up with something I enjoyed writing and would enjoy reading!
@tticusFinch
@tticusFinch Жыл бұрын
Right?? If I have a moral in mind, my writing comes out stilted and my story flat. If I release my characters to do what they want and we get to see real, impactful consequences of their beliefs, motivations, and actions, a moral kind of forms itself that I can build on in later drafts.

This is honestly what really stifled my creative juices during high school, among other external factors. I consumed a lot of analysis from paintings, books, movies and all kinds of medias. That distant feeling of someone could have a completely different reading than what i intended from my work is not unwelcomed; but I'm terrified of making the wrong move and didn't have enough hindsight to cover all of the necessities. Nowadays I'm trying to just throw everything on paper and let the stuff simmer in a few days. If I don't see anything fundamentally needed to be changed, then I just keep it as it is, even if I may edit stuff later on

Once I was writing a story and after a few pages I realized the main character’s rival is wayyy more interesting than the MC. The rival ended up becoming the new MC because she had far more interesting backstory and love interest. Anddddd I can torture her more! :)

1:08 My story is about humanized songs. For example, I had some good album songs there. I noticed I didn't want some of them and had to rename them. However, I realised that the first letter of the characters name is the first letter of the song they're based off. And I don't have time to find a new album that suits it well. I was gonna change it, but then I thought renaming was weird. "Huh, so you CAN rename your characters if you want?" is what I thought, looking at this.

That post at 7:03 got me thinking about what I could write in my fic that I didn’t plan to write but would hurt me as the writer the most, so practically pulling a plot twist on myself. I hadn’t introduced the identity of one of the antagonists yet despite being far into the story, and now I’m fully considering making it the protagonists ‘traumatized artist type’ replacement father figure. He’s just a vibing little dude but it fits so well in the plot. I’m internally screaming but thank you for making this video.

8:06 oh my god THIS. and its _why_ i rarely even write anything (dont even have an account on any fanfic or book site like ao3 or anything, dont read any sort of fanfic nor am i an actual writer but i just like watching these videos cause of how many ocs i have and how badly i want to actually showcase them to people lol) i can tend to talk rather formal (or at least, more formal than expected for casual conversation) aswell as i can have trouble with what is and isnt actually deemed normal for casual conversation because of never really actually socializing with anyone for most of my life and having a hard time with social cues and such. so literally nobody has ever read any snippets of dialogue ive written cause im scared theyre gonna read it and be like “why do they talk like that” IDK I TALK LIKE THAT SO THEY HAVE TO TOO OK LEAVE ME ALONE

Some of these actually made me feel better about my fanfics, because I'm constantly worrying if the story or the characters are good enough. People have read it on ao3, but not much constructive criticisms or stuff like that. I've asked people to read it so I could know if it's good or not, but they never do. I was about this || close to deleting them, but these memes actually made me feel better. Thanks Tonka Joey.

I get way too attached to my characters. Just a side note... I'm in the Danganronpa fandom. These are fanganronpa characters. I picked the wrong fandom to get attached to my ocs in. I keep talking about the one character I've killed of so far on my page, because it wasn't until I wrote her death that I realized how much I would miss her. I can't bring myself to write anymore, even though I'm literally in the first of 5 chapters and the story is still under an hour of read time. It's too painful to go on.

One of my favorite things about writing is that a story can start out as a self indulgent, positive self-insert to make you happy and now the main character is nothing like you other than being short as shit, all of the characters are even more traumatized than they already were, but at least your main character gets to be best friends with your favorite character!

I have a really life-saving lifehack for situations when I can't describe my new character's traits, emotions, habits, mentality, experiences! I google some psychological tests and stuff like this: "your type of character based on your...", "your mental age", "how much your childhood trauma affected your life", "do you like to be alone or not". And then I answer the test questions exactly as my character would answer. I use the results of the tests to make my characters more interesting and alive 😅
