What about C++? Can we use that to write Solana smart contract? I really hate Rust syntax.

if you look at the .mk file linked in the makefile he is using it says " @echo 'This makefile will build Solana Programs from C or C++ source files into ELFs'" . He would also have saved some time by typing the help command for the make file " @echo ' - Programs are named by their directory name (eg. directory name:src/foo/ -> program name:foo)'"
