EDIT: you'll notice there's a rather abrupt cut at 13:38-this is because originally I wrongly said that Lucas was voiced by Troy Baker, when he just... totally wasn't! It was John Hopkins. Sorry for the mistake! I sure hope they don't announce any DLC maps immediately after publishing like they did with 2! In all seriousness, thanks for checking this out-I hope the many, many hours and sleepless nights trying to get this ready were worth the wait! Just a reminder that you can get 83% off Surfshark VPN (with 3 extra months free) at surfshark.deals/games and entering promo code GAMES. Also, if you enjoy the videos and would like to directly help me continue to make more, consider heading to patreon.com/writingongames and pledging only what you're comfortable with. Doing so gets you access to things like early, completely ad-free video uploads (right now there's a video on Descenders exclusive to patrons for the next wee while) as well as new commentaries on older videos! Your support is what allows me to keep doing this and I'll never be able to thank you enough for that. Stay safe everyone!

To me, the Romania mission is a perfect ending to the trilogy, because it ties up the story whilst following the tradition that almost every game in the series follows for its final mission. After going through numerous intricate maps that allow a great deal of freedom for 47 to complete his objectives, he finds himself in a position to finally put an end to the game's main antagonist in a fairly small map where the target is hiding behind a small army of goons. This generally involves a massive shootout where 47 demonstrates just how futile his target's schemes to kill him with brute force and sheer numbers are. In Codename 47, you fight through the squad of Agent 48 clones to get to Ort-Meyer and eliminate him. In Silent Assassin, you take out all of the goons guarding the church so that you can kill Sergei and save Vittorio. In Contracts, you are free to go guns blazing, fighting your way through the SWAT team to kill the inspector who shot 47 (though I think that, story and character wise, it makes more sense to just slip past them and kill the inspector, as he is the only one who knows 47's identity). In Blood Money, you slaughter all of the people at 47's fake funeral so that you can put an end to the Franchise and maintain 47's anonymity. The only game that breaks this tradition is Absolution, but even then, you still have to take out the elite guards and Jade before you can kill Travis. As such, it is fitting that the WOA Trilogy ends with 47 fighting through a small army of mercenaries to get to The Constant and destroy Providence once and for all. The game even encourages you to kill everyone on the map by telling you in the objectives that all Providence members are fair game and you will not be penalized for taking them out. This also makes sense from a narrative standpoint, as 47 is known to be very protective of his identity and anonymity, so much so that he will kill anyone who compromises them, even innocent bystanders like the journalist and the priest in Blood Money. As such, he would, logically, take out everyone on the train, as all of them either know who he is or have seen his face. As he says in Contracts "Inspector, you've obviously learnt too much about me. I can't have that. Not even in my death." Overall, while I understand why you dislike the ending mission in the WOA Trilogy, I think it makes sense from a story perspective (which you did, to be fair, address in this video), and I like how it subtly pays homage to the earlier games.

The only issue I had with Dartmoor was that there was no resolution to Emma being outed as Zachary’s murderer. I mean think about it. If you accuse Fernsby, Emma poisons Alexa. Dartmoor and Mendoza are among my least favorite maps in Hitman 3, Dartmoor for its visuals being the most drab and uninteresting, and the murder mystery just never interested me the same way it did for a lot of people. Mendoza because it felt like a step back from everything the 3 games had been doing, even though I understood its supposed to be a final send-off, and it was oddly more of a pain to navigate than Dubai and somehow managed to feel much larger and needlessly open like several of Hitman 2's maps despite not being anywhere that big. However maps like Berlin, Dubai, and Chongquing are such smash hits for me and the rest of the game, including Hitman 1 and 2's content, are so good and filled with content that I can live with not liking 2 of the Hitman 3 maps as much as most others do. I've loved Hitman 3 and the WOA trilogy.

It breaks my heart when men (and it's consistently been guys who have said this to me) say that they don't find the story in the WOA trilogy to be compelling. Like what? After 20 years, 47 finally becomes a whole person! Even if it doesn't last, he has a family in Grey! And, my personal favourite as a woman, Diana is at NO POINT ever the damsel in distress! She's a hypercompetent badass who exploits Edwards' weakness and gives 47 the chance to leave her forever for using him the way that Providence made him to be used. They end the story as equals and to see that kind of love in a video game about murders?? IOI has some of the best writers in the business and they are owed your attention to their craft.

@@WritingOnGames There aren't a lot of writers who can tell a story in inferences the way they can. On the surface, you've got 47 going to the asylum, meeting Grey and then the next scene is him explaining the plan to Diana. Seems straightforward. But in the context of the previous games, this is a huge development. In Absolution, Diana just bolts with Victoria and doesn't say a thing to 47 until it's too late. And before that, in Blood Money, he just retreats inward and doesn't help her at all. Now they're sharing information and working together? That's character growth - in a game about murder puzzles. How did you feel about the sort of Battle in the Centre of the Mind that happens post-Mendoza? I found it a delicious insight into 47 as a character, seeing what he's afraid of (that Diana does really hate him) and what still doesn't affect him (the previous targets aren't accusers so much as a wall he built around himself) but I imagine that for someone more invested in gameplay the sequence was maybe frustrating

I was very interested to see what you had to say about Dartmoor. In my review of a similar length, I stated that Dartmoor was actually one of the weaker levels in the game despite the praise it garnered. I felt so many people got caught up in the murder mystery and praised it solely on that. But on subsequent runs, the map doesn't really offer much variety outside of two ho-hum mission stories. In a series about replayability, having one mission story dominate a level this heavily leaves subsequent runs feeling lesser.

It's also the only mission where the secondary objective is unskippable. It's like they were forced to keep it in, because if it could be skipped, there would only be one thing to do - eliminate Alexa Carlisle. The rest of the missions in H3 solved this problem of secondary objectives dragging down subsequent runs, but Dartmoor forces their hand to keep it mandatory. It dragged down the level for me.

The thing for me is the murder mystery never interested me much to begin with, so my experience with that aspect was nowhere as positive as others. I didn't dislike it, but it felt really out of place with the rest of the game for me. I wasn't very interested in walking around pointing my camera at things and pressing dialogue prompts, I wanted to enjoy the gameplay I'd come to love over 3 games. I also found Mendoza overrated and it somehow felt like a step back from the rest of the levels, and despite being nowhere the size of Dubai, it managed to feel more empty and needlessly big like Merrakesh and several of Hitman 2's levels. The most interesting part of it was Diana's involvement as an NPC, and the Sniper Team, but the rest of the level is just meh for me. Chongqing and Berlin are easily my favorite levels for both the story beats and the level designs themselves. They're about as close to perfect for me and Berlin does a great job with the variety and tight use of space. It doesn't feel too small or too big. I got full mastery on it the fastest and grinded out most of the challenges because I loved that level that much. On the other hand, I don't really have the same criticism of the train level that others do. It's a solid subversion of the rest of the gameplay up until that point without feeling out of place like the murder mystery did. The final level wraps up the story pretty well, especially considering for me I was hardly interested in the story throughout all 3 games, and it encourages you to let loose and go ham on everyone. It's an IOI-sponsored kill everyone challenge, and a blast to play through. And oddly, relaxing.

I definitely played the Hitman trilogy for different reasons than you. Humor was never a factor. Neither was the fantasy of being a Silent Assassin. I loved exploring these places. But more than just getting the least suspicions costume and walking around freely like in a walking sim, I loved the maps that had challenge to each and every corner. As you said when talking about Berlin, the fantasy of being in a place you know you are not supposed to be in is alluring to me. When I see a closed of door it sends my mind racing coming up with things to find behind it and ways to get into it. When I see guards at a gate I need to see these guards from behind to be happy. When I see a wall I want to climb it. Hitman caters to these feelings, but not fully. When getting a guards uniform is as easy as throwing coins, when walking in a disguise removes any further challenge of getting around, when most mechanics and interactions and gameplay is focused around killing and not enabling further exploration and discovery, I have to admit the game is targeting a different audience from me. What I would love is a different game with similar design. A Hitman that is not about setting up the perfect assassination but that is focused on infiltrating layer after layer of a deep complex system, sometimes by disguising sometimes by climbing. From that point of view Hitman 1-3 can usually be completed by getting a lower level guard then a higher level guard, maybe a service worker thrown in. It took me an eternity to figure out you can climb pipes because it is so easy to just walk around freely in most levels. I rarely played a level a second time. Instead most levels took me several hours of just exploring and discovering ways to kill my targets without actually doing so, instead just enjoying the dialoge scenes of different NPCs and how you can affect them. One of the things I enjoyed most was when different systems interacted with each other. Helping other killers to eliminate my target being the primary example. Doing something in Part A of the Map, grants you a cute NPC interaction, doing something else in Part B of the map just as well. Both things are worth doing for their own sake, but when done together, they create a new Scenario C that is very rewarding to experience. I would love a game that focuses on that. On social engineering, NPCs interacting with each other, maybe changing the routine of other NPCs and enabling entirely new interactions. Ideally also opening up parts of the map only by going through these interactions. Hitman kinda does this on occasion, but usually the reward is a simple assassination opportunity and then it's over. I want more layering, more buildup, an infiltration game where the point is to go deeper and deeper. Don't think that exists

My first playthrough of each game as they came out was like spy-thriller ASMR. By the time I played 3, it had been three years since 2, and that was played two years after season one. So I had forgotten much more about the story than I remembered. I barely understood what was happening by the time I got to three, it's so dense and everything is hidden behind double meanings and sinister euphemisms. But replaying them altogether, seeing the story play out as one long interconnected series, reading all of the dossiers and noticing all of the recurring characters and side plots. When I ran into Jason Portman on Haven, it was a delight. Because I remembered using his Helmut Kruger surgery as a disguise in the Japanese medical facility. The surgery robot in that level was made by the company owned by Robert and Sierra Knox from the Miami mission. Dalia Margolis tried to get Helmut Kruger to cozy up to the Whitmore family, one of the daughters of whom was murdered by Jordan Cross. Ken Morgan, his lawyer, was one of the partners at the providence law firm from the end of Hitman 3. People in Hitman 3 levels talk about targets from Hitman 1. Alexa Carlisle owns stakes in basically all of the evil corporations that have appeared across all three games. There are so many of these details and connections that are easy to miss if you let years pass in between each game. The Farewell has so many callbacks and references to your previous missions, all centered around showing the impact of your assassinations and where those people are, several "where are they now" moments that went completely over my head when there was roughly five years between playing these games. It took my opinion of the narrative from being espionage gobbledygook surrounding an excellent game experience, and transformed it into real respect for a well-told spy thriller that was clearly planned out long in advance. And then something magical happened during my play through of 3.... I stopped replaying the levels over and over again. Not because I didn't want to explore them as much as possible, but simply because I was actually invested in finding out what happens next in this series for the first time. I decided to *save* my replays for later and that's absolutely unprecedented in this series.

I think people would enjoy reruns of Dartmoor a lot more if they self-impose the restriction of getting both Mr. Fernsby and Rebecca Carlisle over just cracking Alexa Carlisle’s safe. The level is really reminiscent of Hitman 2’s New York level: a big beige box devoid of big crowds with the main target who stays around her upper-floor office, two secondary targets to steal from on lower floors, and an alternate win condition in a safe.

I get your feelings towards the train level because it's rather bland from a gameplay perspective. I'm absolutely with you on that. But it clicked so hard for me because it ends this series stressing how Agent 47 is on such another level in his craft. The Constant isn't even impressed by this and expected it that 47 can move undetected through this tight and cramped space full of elite guards with ease. When you play in the more open locations it sometimes feels you're just winging it and 47 is somewhat lucky in how he got through this. It feels like they end it like that to show how excellent he has become over all these years that this scenario (from a stealth perspective) is no problem at all. But I feel you that this is not ideal from a gameplay perspective.

I don't like that Berlin doesn't ask you to find them again on subsequent playthroughs. I get marking them all after two or three playthroughs, but the first couple times through it, *finding* them should be a part of the mission. Maybe they could just mark the ones that you've already found? Because I felt like finding them was an important part of the level, and only having to find five before being given instant access to all of them is a little deflating. I don't know, it's good that they let you skip it eventually, but I just wish they hadn't given up the answers as quickly as they did.

Does anyone else want a "Hitman Collection" with the modern Hitman 1 and 2 on PS5? I would love to have any easy to access set (with all the stuff on the disc) for the two previous 2 games. The only reason I haven't been crazy for this modern iteration of Hitman is because of how weird the releases have been (the first game came out in episodes, you had to download half of the game on the PS4 version of the second game even if you bought the disc, the menus flip you the middle finger every time you go through them if you are playing offline...it's been strange). Hyped for these guys doing Bond game though. Developer and IP match made in heaven.

I finished it yesterday, after finally finding time to play it properly. I was surprised on the different twist most of the maps had compared to the previous two games. Maybe they don't have that much replayability, but those different vibes really fit 3's story arc and the trilogy ends surprisingly well. I can't wait for the next Hitman, it's the last great stealth franchise that's still going on after all.

the role play aspects are amazing and consistent. By the end, you feel very attached to the bald psychopath. Even though it’s not a classic RPG. Also, 47 finally now looks more like a normal dude, his mug no longer looks emaciated like in 1&2. And they made his eyebrows a lot more menacing.

Hitman WoA trilogy is up there at the top of my favourite games list. The missions were so big, that it was overwhelming in a good way. Now I've only played 2016 and 2, so I'm not exactly sure on hitman 3, but ever since I played hitman 2: silent assassin on my ps2, I've been hooked on the hitman franchise. Now, from playing silent assassin, blood money, absolution, it's interesting how the game has evolved. At first stealth was iffy in silent assassin, and really unpredictable in terms of the suspicion meter, to blood money with understandable suspicion but kinda clunky mechanics, to absolution which looked more like WoA but had its own quirks. I'm excited for the future of the hitman franchise.

One comment on Whittleton Creek. Many players complain about the fact that it is mandatory to find the clues every time they are playing the map, but to be fair you really do not have to navigate to different parts every time because the game has got you covered there. You can find three clues in close proximity to each other in about two minutes. Would I prefer these mission objectives to be optional? Sure, but on the other hand it's not that big of a deal.

Oh wow... I thought I knew everything about this game already, but I had no idea that you could actually have Emma poison Alexa Carlisle. In a weird twist, this almost means "solving" the mystery the wrong way successfully is the cleanest "silent assassion" approach to the mission, since the target will end up dead without 47 laying a finger on them himself.

@@markuskoivisto True! I think the one that comes closest is the Kashmerian in Mumbai, since he also wants the target dead and is actively planning to kill him, without 47 having to trick or manipulate him (unlike in Chongqing or Mendoza). Still though... Even that one needs 47 to help him. With Emma Carlisle... If she was for some reason just not stopped, she would have ended up killing Alexa either way, which almost makes 47's assassination mission redundant (not the part where he gets the intel from the safe though, of course)

i know this is hella late but i knda disagree with you take on the final level, i do agree that from a gameplay standpoint, and that of a hardcore hitman fan, it is super underwhelming. But i only recently first started playing hitman with the release of the world of assassination game on steam, so i was never a hardcore hitman fan, i always would play shooter games. so me being someone who never really played stealth games picking up hitman, i was really bad because often i would try to shoot myself out of a situation. the final level to me felt freeing in its restriction, with the added optional goal of taking out anyone on the train it felt like the game finally telling me, "go nuts" and i did indeed, go nuts. it also ties into the story in a way that shows how 47 is now free, i got the feeling that with every random guard, or officer worker i peppered with shotgun pellets, 47 was finally done with providences' shit and wasnt being told what to do anymore. TLDR, i liked the final level because i got to just kill shit lol

Honestly I was okay with the finale being an action setpiece, though I agree that Dartmoor proves a Murder on the Orient Express situation would've been preferable for a train level. It was very reminiscent of 47's funeral from Blood Money (which it was obviously a tribute to) where you have a level where EVERYONE is a valud target and you are strongly encouraged to let all hell break loose.

What a fun watch! Can't agree more with just about everything you said. It's such a shame that the final mission is the shallow, narrow structure that it is. They were teasing that upside down pyramid HQ for awhile and it seemed like that'd be the final location. Such a bummer that it wasn't. That being said, cannot wait to see the new missions they're now teasing as DLC for Hitman 3.

I would like to see a continuation of his story he has progressed so much and has come so far to redeem himself and break away from the strings that were being pulled on him and Diana I want to see him become a new more cooler and far more badass version of himself; he will always be the Agent 47 we know and love but I for one would like to see a new iteration of him becoming a Suave sophisticated vigilante type of character that is using his deadly skills to help protect the innocent from the evil-doers, like what was said before he did not give up his skills and ability of killing but he's going on a New Direction with it in the fact that he's going to hunt those that are truly evil in the world like the constant so I for one I'm looking forward to the new chapter of Agent 47 becoming The Equalizer in this unique and creatively well-written video game universe.

I'll often refer to these games as a masterclass in game design, and I, too, measure the quality of other games against Hitman, and am often disappointed. While I totally see your point about viewing the NPCs as AI clusters, they're also generally really good worldbuilding. Sure, some of their behaviours can be a little strange, but they also really do feel like individual characters living their lives in this world and not just set pieces. The security guard and maid flirting in Dartmoor, overheard phone conversations giving little glances into the personal life of a waiter or security guard who is about to experience SEVERE HEAD TRAUMA from a pipe wrench. Conversations that reveal opportunities or build more background for the targets are all over the place, but the stuff that's unrelated to the missions, there's a ton of it and it's gold

see, I disagree when it comes to your view of the plot. We need more stories told about how nobody in the upper echelons of power deserves to be immune from consequences, and the fact that you as 47 garrotte your way through people who are far more monstrous in many ways than the bald man in a costume with the fiber wire.

This is a point I've seen come up a lot and it's one I'm iffy on. Just because the themes of a story might be good, just because we might not get a lot of stories tackling certain themes... doesn't automatically mean those stories that do are told *well*. That's the argument I'm making with Hitman. I think the gameplay tells far more effective stories than the trite tale they've plastered on top of it all, and I don't think that's good enough to justify the final level being as linear as it is.
