It's hard to talk about rhetoric without ethos, pathos, and logos coming up. In this video, we talk about these three means of persuasion as Aristotle described them and discuss their usefulness when it comes to communicating with all kinds of people.

21:35 I kind of learned abt rhetoric by accident too. I read Mortimer j Adlers book "how to read a book" and was interested more in Adlers work and found his successor book "how to speak how to listen". Through him I found Aristotles rhetoric and fell in love with Aristotle. Years later I attended community college and remember in my college speech class the teacher just glossed over aristotles ethos pathos logos and just gave us the footnotes and I was disappointed (along with my chemistry teacher who never missed a chance to discredit Aristotle). Next semester I took a business ethics class and we had a new teacher for the class. And still to this day I have never heard someone utilize ethos pathos and logos better than that old former football coach. He did an outstanding A+ job on his opening day speech and got everyone in that classroom to be on his side, even skeptical ol me. Couldve had us start a revolt that day if he wanted. To bad he that he quickly dropped the ball and could not keep our enthusiasm that high. To my knowledge he did not come back for a second year. I will never forget that old man he was a legend. Coach Dozal.

You've credibly established your ethos with the educated appearance and the books that i must assume you have read cover to cover on the topic. You've applied pathos by appealing to humor and using comedic elements to guide our concentration, as well as the demonstration with the adverts to further emotionally invest the audience towards your conclusion. And youve used logos by laying out the history of the terminology, the names of the men who coined the terms, as well as refrencing logical structures and the implementation of them, to guide the audience towards your conclusion. I learned a good deal here. It's probably still a little wrong, but your efforts have earned you my respect and attention, good sir.

I must admit, using the ad from KZbin to provide an exercise to illustrate a point is quite clever. I got an ad from tic tock trying to invoke an appeal to boredom and one from Hulu that played on the self direction value claiming I'd take back control of my education as though control was ever taken from me.

Hey thanks--those are some interesting ads! You better make sure you keep control of that education lol!

The ad - for a Disney film about a motley group of people wanting and trying to start a restaurant - appears, to me, to be appealing to what could be the "emotion of hustling" (if such a term exists). I would define the emotion of hustling as being a motivational hype, an impetus or call to struggle against odds and overcome obstacles. Obviously this kind of motivation can be easily transmitted through the medium of film and this particular film is the one doing that right now. Get more of this feeling by watching the film.

Awesome! I bet a lot of ads for films do that "feel more of this" approach. (Also, I saw a notification for a comment about a toaster poster a few days ago that disappeared for whatever reason. This is just to say: it got a good laugh out of me--and it sounds like a business opportunity 😆)

Ive got premium so the ad break talk had me cocking my head tbh. I do appreciate your willingness to talk about the state of things. This has been and will continue to be a good resource for me to articulate myself. For years Ive been trying to script and add more put together responses to my GigaTism rolodex, and a few years ago there was a shift where I finally internalized that the cycle of outrage is horseshit. I may not have the patience for de-radicalizing someone, but at least Im not out here being quippy to folks wearing bigot paraphernalia anymore.

lol, that's fair--but thanks! It's like I tell my students all the time: even if you don't completely resolve the problem you're writing about, don't underestimate the value of meaningful steps in the right direction

How are you doing mr Andrew . Honestly Iam very happy to be subscriber in your channel. In the past only travel aboard or looking for books to learn new information. Nowadays KZbin channels as open universities for every one google and google is our library. I hope you consider me as real student and guide and correct me . I looked up for meanings of words you mentioned Aristotle rhetoric is ability to see what is possibly persuasive in every given case . Ethos is distinguishing character , sentiment, moral nature , guiding belief of person, group , institution . Pathos is Greek word means experiences, misfortune, emotion conditions. Logos is term used in western philosophy, psychology, rhetoric, connotes appeal to rational discourse that relies on inductive and inductive. Logos used can be found in argumentative writing, persuasive arguments in addition literature or poetry. The ethos and patios, logos are tools of Aristotle rhetoric. Good luck to you your dearest one . We in Arabic countries began our conversation and end with bid farewell.

The ad: St. Jude's hospital. Here you tell me to pay attention to the emotional evocation of an ad, and I immediately get a story about a girl with cancer, and the parents talking about how difficult it was. No subtlety at all in terms of pathos: sympathy, sorrow, and a sense of heroics from the hospital.

6:46 I got a Pepperidge farm ad and a Nissan Rouge ad. Pepperidge farm presented its self as the light crispy cookie of a clearly elegant and distinguished woman of class and high social status, who is clearly not afraid of being brash bc she used the word "d*mn" in an ad. I want to have high social status with minimum amount of effort so I should probably me some Pepperidge farm cookies. The Nissan Rouge ad tag line is "more than basic" it does this by flaunting its bigger touch screen (bigger compared to what? The previous model?). I personally do not care at all abt the rating of its crash safety features or the suspension or how fast the brakes can take the car from 60 to 0- or even the price bc we all know that this is a time when America has a booming economy and there are many middle class Americans who are actively wanting to buy a new car. No no I personally do not care for any of that nonsense. I want a bigger touch screen on my dash. Definitely more than basic.

"Next, since, concerning themes so dark, I frame Songs so pellucid, touching all throughout Even with the Muses' charm- which, as 'twould seem, Is not without a reasonable ground: But as physicians, when they seek to give Young boys the nauseous wormwood, first do touch The brim around the cup with the sweet juice And yellow of the honey, in order that The thoughtless age of boyhood be cajoled As far as the lips, and meanwhile swallow down The wormwood's bitter draught, and, though befooled, Be yet not merely duped, but rather thus Grow strong again with recreated health:" - De Rerum Natura
