Wroxall to Shanklin - A ride along the old railway path - Isle Of Wight.

A short bike ride from Wroxall to Shanklin.
A nice walk of only two and a half miles or so.. and a nice bike ride too, also popular with horse riders.
Lovely countryside views and over and under bridges.
Very handy if you're staying at Lower Hyde holiday camp at the Shanklin end.

Having done this many times now I am hoping to expand a bit and go from Shanklin to Wroxall and then to Ventnor. But hard finding a good walking route from Wroxall to Ventnor though that does not involve main roads.

Done that cycle many a time and when its sunny like that it's wonderful.. The route from Wroxall to Merstone it also Scenic..

Wow, that's changed a bit since i used to walk along there back in the late 70's early 80's. I remember it before the access road was built opposite Shanklin station, the embankment on the Wroxhall side of the road used to run right up to where the bridge used to be. And back then you could not have ridden a bike along the entire length like that, was very poorly maintained back then, in a few places you had to force your way through the brambles. Wroxhall has changed a lot, lot of new buildings. I remember we used to rejoin the main road near the bridge, then we walked up beside what used to be called the Star Inn, followed the lane up a bit further then drop back down onto the old railway line. Then we often walked through the tunnel to Ventnor. The tunnel used to have gates back then, and more often than not they would be unlocked, we just hoped and prayed that the gates would also be unlocked at the other end! If they were locked at the Ventnor end we would walk back through to Wroxhall and have a pint in the Star, rather than the Terminus at Ventnor. Though we always preferred the beer in the Terminus, they sold a lovely pint of Burts in there! Great memories!

Downhill all the way from Wroxall to Shanklin! It's a lovely walk (or ride!) in late Spring when the Primroses and the Bluebells carpet the lineside.

Wroxall has grown massively since the railway line to Shanklin and Ryde closed in 1966. What a shame that this cycle path doesn't extend through the mile-long tunnel under St. Boniface Down to terminate at Ventnor!

I travelled that route ... when it was a railway line in the early 60s. Many happy memories as a kid and a great shame that they don't re-open the line to Ventnor, which really suffered when they lost their rail connection.

There's been talk of re-opening this route & one other. I'd love to see it happen. Time will tell..

@@Oske.images From what I understand, there are not too many obstacles actually built over the old track route. Mainly around Wroxall and the large water pipe that runs through the St Boniface tunnel to the large water tank just outside the Ventnor portal. I hope it happens!

It seems strange that the Shanklin to Ventnor line closed when the Ryde to Shanklin line was retained. I hope it can reopen. The tunnel is a roosting place for bats apparently, so they would need to find another home.

@@ianhelps3749 Shanklin is a bigger town than Ventnor and also coastal, so it had more passengers. In closing Ventnor, BR were also able to close the small inland Wroxall Station and a long length of track ... along with the tunnel. There is a small man made cave on that section of cycle path , well worth a look if you can find it !
