"private label" doesn't necessarily mean that retails "make" (as you say) these products. It just means they've entered a contract with a manufacturer to create a private label product that only they can sell. In some cases the major manufacturers that already have their own name brand labels on the shelves are the very ones who "make" these private label goods.

From what I've been seeing here in Australia, stores have been artificially jacking up the prices of the competition to push consumers towards buying more store-branded products. I'm guessing that eventually, stores will only stock their own branded products, forming monopolies, and then charging premium prices once all other choices have been removed.
@Realoemo
@Realoemo 14 күн бұрын
At that point the stores would be competing directly with each other, which isn’t too different from what stores used to do back when name brands weren’t a huge draw. I too am weary of what could happen but this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, just a big shift in the market
@MrShikaga
@MrShikaga 14 күн бұрын
Everyone always says that, but it never happens, because there is always someone new to compete when someone tries to price gouge. The only way to actually price gouge is to have lobbyists writing laws in your favour (like the internet companies). Everyone said Amazon would jack up the prices once they had a monopoly. Well, they have been the only store for years now, and they still offer the cheapest prices.

I fear that Better Goods (or similar higher priced store brands) will yield a similar result as Amazon vs Barnes and Noble/Borders. They will entice you with similar quality with perhaps a small discount. You will get used to it and the variety of brands (I know that ownership is already consolidated greatly) will be diminished. It's a balancing act of understanding the real constraints of everyday consumer's pocketbooks, and cultivating an economy where store brands have control of the creation for every item in their store.

As a walmart driver, private labels are just the wrapper in a sense. The product is still made by the big manufacturers. Its the reliability for people in the private labels. So kraft cheese makes the product, but they will slap a great value private label on the product. So if kraft can send kraft packaging with their products they have to account for manufacture, transport of the product, advertisement, and profit. If walmart sends their driver there walmart is doing the transport, storing it, and advertising it on its walmart app, and distributing it so its a bigger margin for walmart to do the private labels, so all kraft has to do is make the profit from manufacturing it. Its a win win for everyone. But again its the reliability and trust in tge big brands is why people come to any store. Then they might try different things while they shop and love it. So stop spending all the money on the brand products because u are paying more for the same products u can get a lower price point.

Private labels, such as those introduced by Walmart and Target, come with certain drawbacks. One significant concern is that these private brands occupy valuable shelf space, leading to increased costs for other companies seeking shelf placement. As a result, the pricing of main-label products is driven higher to offset these expenses.

I'll buy Walmart / store brand if the price difference is big enough, but I'll still expect the off brand to taste and work as well as the private label. Too often, the private label price becomes ridiculous and I'll get the store brand - for a while. Once the store brand gets out of line, I just change my menu.

Walmart: refers to people shopping with them as "customers"👤 Target: refers to people shopping with them as "consumers" 💲
@ian3580
@ian3580 13 күн бұрын
That's literally what they are - that is the correct term when discussing this in a business context. That's why what they sell is called 'consumer goods'. The everyday definitions are basically the same. Consumer: a person who purchases goods and services for personal use Customer: a person or organization that buys goods or services from a store or business If in your mind one of these is different in how they are treated - that's not a reality. Both are the same.

Availability is also something i have been noticing. Name brands are frequently out of stock or not all of its varieties are available. The private label brands are often there and with variety. I don’t necessarily appreciate that. So i simply choose not to buy. The problem then becomes that i am now taking my money to other stores that do have the products i want, or i but them online.

i definitely notice a difference in brand name quality. example is trader joe foods, i can tell not enough R&D went into the product such as having an after taste or too dry of a food item, etc. i avoid buying generic whenever possible. sure there are exceptions to the rule but the generic stuff is off limits for me. i don't like it.

For the most part, I doubt Walmart manufactures its products. It appears to contract with an existing manufacturer or wholesaler and then places its own label on the item. For example, Bettergoods pizza is the same as Roncadin pizza.

Yeah yeah, this will work just as well when Warmart said they wanted to pivot to online and become as big as Amazon. 5 years later and they are 0% commited. These business lack commitment and vision. At the moment, the only business that executes this strategy right is Costco. Another point Walmart is missing: These products should not mean an increase in price as "elevated lifestyle", but better quality for the same price just by virtue of eliminating the middleman.
