SWFL Eagles_ Morning Antics~E15 Hangs Strong Upside Down & Redesigns Some Trees 09-08-20

E15 flew to the CSPS (church side pond snag) and the leaning palm and "danced", bit at bark and moss and greenery and showed us how strong her(his) legs and talons are while hanging from a branch and then righting themselves perfectly to fly away. E15 is 161 days old today and still here in the nest area.

I left a comment on LH channel that if a psychiatrist evaluated this family there would be much discussion about enabling their child to be too dependent on them, thus crippling her ability to be self sufficient and thrive independently. There are some intellectual processes going on in this girl. She scrutinizes everything around her, often doing that adorable head tilt. And that upside down talon hang, it seemed like she hung on in order to determine the best and safest way out of the predicament. She's really quite a remarkable eagle!

I looked it up... Territory size varies depending on habitat and prey density but is thought to encompass 0.6-1.2 square miles (Buehler 2000). Bald eagle nests are spaced apart to ensure sufficient food resources for nestlings and to raise young with minimal disturbance from other eagles. Soooooo, maybe our little E15, is going to make a claim somewhere close?

vicki echerd, we do not know why E15 has remained here. In a nutshell, the juveniles fly as far as they need for an adequate food source and it looks like for now, he/she has an adequate food source here.

@@roseprincess2155 - this is the nest of H & M, not E15. They have rebuilt this nest every year for new eggs and eaglets. If E15 remains in the area, h/she will not be welcome in the immediate nest area when eggs arrive. But E15 could very well remain nearby and continue getting food for themself. Yes, this is the first time we have had a juvenile remain this long at the SWFEC nest.
