I installed and set up WSL 2 today. One thing you forgot to mention, the user need to enable virtualisation feature from their bios/uefi to actually enable this. My install failed the first time since I've forgotten to do so.

Wow, thats cool. I was wondering about WSL2 for my Ideapad 5 Flex 14 since so far, my linux usb sticks aren't booting and here you are with a video! Awesome! Still want to try and get Linux to boot though. Its better for my coding experience all around. I think it may have something with UEFI booting...not sure though. Tried Manjaro and now trying Ubuntu. Using Balena Etcher. I'll keep at it though.

Here my fear of WSL: Microsoft keeps developers on Windows10 and that way developers will use Microsoft-only software instead of using cross-platform software.

​@@ChrisTitusTech An employee of Canonical set it up for Microsoft, according to Alan Pope. I can see why developers like to be able to access Linux from Windows but here my question marks. Why hasn' t Microsoft simply built in support for ext4 and other file-systems straight into Windows? Why is it only that Linux is being brought to Windows by Microsoft but Microsoft does not port any of its proprietary standards to Linux? Like DX9, DX11, DX12, all those system libraries...everything that makes it necessary for us to use WINE. Speaking about, yesterday StarCraft2 broke for Linux with WINE after an update of Blizzard. Let MS fix that first, then I will consider trusting them.

My biggest problem with WSL2 is the speed of reading from Windows files. 'rsync -r /mnt/c/Users /mnt/d/Backups' on WSL2 takes 13 times longer than WSL1, which, in turn, was 4 times longer than native Rsync

Woah... Chris! Read this: "Microsoft announced upcoming GPU support for WSL a few weeks ago at Build 2020, along with support for running Linux GUI apps." and they are bringing CUDA/OPENCL too, meaning Linux machine learning will run on Windows!

Been using it all this week for a programming project I’m working on. Impressed with it. Being able to use SDKMan on latest Ubuntu for remote programming with VSCode on Windows is great. And Docker/Kub for Windows can be used from inside Ubuntu.

You should try the new Windows Terminal its actually good, also to shutdown your WSL VM use wsl --shutdown or to shutdown only one WSL instance wsl -t yourdistro

Chris, I have been playing around with WSL2 Ubuntu 20.04. I installed open-sshd so that I could ssh into my WSL2 instance. The weird thing is that I can do it locally but if I try to ssh from a different machine on my network, I can't get it. I'm wondering if you are having the same problem. it looks like in windows that it is creating a network adapter called vEthernet (WSL) and the IP address is change each time. My ip is 172.17.224.1. 172 is reserved for private networks. My network is 192.168.1.*.

Nice video. Unfortunately my woes are with the confounded resolv.conf and VPN nameservers. Whenever on VPN, I can never get name resolution to happen consistently over sessions. It never "just works."

Hello Chris, Thank you for this video. I was just attempting to set this configuration up today on my Windows 10 machine, and after downloading Ubuntu, the installation successful message came up, and the prompt was asking for my UNIX user name and then password. The video I watched for the setup (yes, it was another KZbin channel!) just showed entering a simple 5 letter first name, hitting enter, and entering a password. However, when I typed my first name and hit enter, I received this message "enter a username to match the regular expression configured via the NAME_REGEX[_SYSTEM] configuration variable".

I've been testing wsl2 recently. If someone would like to use Vmware Workstation along WSL2, it is now possible with VMware Workstation 15.5; they use user-space VMM if another hypervisor (e.g. hyper-v) is used.

I understand VMware still has that version of Workstation in Beta and not released officially yet. Is a major reason why I'm holding back from WSL2, don't want to keep disabling hyper-v to enable VMware (and Virtualbox)

Hi Titus. I'm currently facing a problem with WSL2. I don't have network connectivity by default. When I switch to WSL1, I get network again (without any tweak or configuration). Windows subsystem for linux and Virtual machine platforme are enabled (+ linux kernel installed). I've found a lot of posts about the subject but no "clear" solution. Do we have to activate "Hyper-V" too? I don't think so. Thanks.

If my work laptop wasn't such a POS I'd look at doing this on that machine. Though I got around a lot of the Windows limitations by putting up a Linux VM and just connecting to it for all my Linux needs.

When you get this Ubuntu up and running in WSL, it is a binary compatible Ubuntu. You can exchange all the binaries with a real Ubuntu Linux. Only one thing is different: There is no Linux kernel. Try these three commands in WSL: uname -a ls /proc ps aux And a Linux user will see it right away, it is no Linux environment. It is something similar. WSL is great and all Windows users who will learn Linux command line should get it.

I upgraded but found that apt update no longer works in wsl2. If I switch back to version 1 it works fine. It’s seems like there is a different IP addressing configuration based on a virtual switch but I haven’t found much info on it yet. Anyone?

I don't know about wsl 1, but not with WSL 2 as it's a virtual machine still and uses virtual disks. When I ran fdisk -l to see if I could even see the drive it just showed me a bunch of /dev/ram files and the 250 GB virtual disk.

Check out the Linux tool GParted. This allows you to partition or format however you want from a GUI.
