For all you know, this sentence could be written by artificial intelligence technology. The same can increasingly be said of any image, video or even audio file uploaded online.
In an attempt to help people distinguish between AI-generated and human-generated content, Adobe and the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity have proposed a system for disclosing how a piece of content was created.
Called content credentials, the system would embed information, such as who created a piece of content and whether it was made using generative AI tools, in the content’s metadata and append a watermark indicating such information was attached. Beyond disclosing AI’s involvement, the content credential system can also be used to credit artists for their work and verify its authenticity, as Digiday senior media editor Tim Peterson explains in this video skit.

The power of Content Credentials is not to stop AI-generation: You can always just generate an AI-image, save that as PNG (or similar format), import that into Photoshop. Or you could generate your AI-image and take a photo of that using a Content Credential enabled camera. The power is that Content Credentials makes it possible to track who has changed the image, thus who you need to trust. If you trust the creator, you can verify that the image has not been altered by others.

I've been wondering about this. If people want to hide the fact they're using AI tools to make their images, what's stopping them from taking a screenshot of the edited content and passing it off as 100% human generated? Will we get to a point where content online will not be accepted as legitimate unless we can verify the authenticity of it using something like content credentials, exposing the specifics of how our work was put together? Or will the system fall apart without them tracking every single thing we generate using AI? I'm appreciative that Adobe is making an early effort to help us discern what's actually real vs AI, but I have my doubts over the long term effectiveness of the current implementation.
