The way you narrate the show , (and perhaps I am miss reading you) but you seem to imply that the show ripped off The Power Rangers. Well that can't be, because it came out before PR! Now, if you were to say Super Sentai, or Gatchaman...maybe. I liked the show, except for the obvious Star Wars rip-off it was, as with many shows,...back then, it seems like every producer said it must be like Star Wars for nearly every thing! Even these days....(although I love Star Wars too) , it's like everyone is out of ideas! Lastly, I really hate these woman groups who mess these types of shows up! For example, on TMNT Michelangelo use to swing nunchucks, then it was sausage links, or a rope! Then people don't want to watch the shows, and they get cancelled! Even now, you can't find a cartoon on Saturday morning, and if you do... it's some lame educational show, that's maybe for 4 year olds! And if you don't have cable, or internet, or fire stick, but just a regular TV, you can forget about being entertained on Saturday morning, or weekdays afternoon, and that likely because of these woman groups, saying it's too violent, I'm surprised they didn't stop the MCU! Enough said!

I worked for about 18 months on the post-production team for this show (Post was done at Motion Picture Video Corp. in Toronto). Before you criticize the CG you need to remember a few things. It was VERY time consuming back then and doing it for a TV series was an insane task. The company that did the CG (ARCCA Animation) was under deadlines that you wouldn't believe. Not just time and money, but back then rendering took huge amounts of time. I've been in the CG industry for 35 years and what they did was phenomenal for the time. Not only did they work in wireframe, often scenes were so heavy that the wireframe had to be rendered so you could play it in real time. It's also important to remember this series was created pre-digital compositing. It was shot on film which we then transferred to 1" videotape. We used 5 Ampex VPR3s to layer in all the effects - and there were a LOT of elements! You couldn't do everything at once so you would have 4 element tapes up being recorded to the 5th machine, then that would get moved over to a source machine and we'd add more layers. The battle shots sometimes took days to add all of the layers. We had several 2D elements and had to position each one for every gun blast you see. You showed several shots of 'overmind' - when we first got the footage the post supervisor came to me and said "Can you make this not look like a washing machine?" I had about 2 hours to come up with something so we created a few overlay effects as shown in those shots. That's how things got done. This series was groundbreaking on many, many levels. Does it stand up today? No - but it was 35 years ago. I'm still very proud of what we did and I'm sure the rest of the team is as well. Fun fact: The warehouse were much of this was shot was the same place where The Fly was filmed a year earlier.

In the third S1 episode to air, airing October 4, 1987, “Final Stand,” we learn that Tank was not the only genetically-engineered person of his kind, and also the facility which genetically engineered him was “Babylon 5.” This was about two years before JMS wrote the B5 story Bible and pilot script, and about six years before Warner Bros. commissioned the Babylon 5 series for production in May 1993. /mindblown!!!

My girlfriend had never seen the series and we were both fans of JMS, so we watched it together. Then we got to a scene where Tank was talking and he said the words, "When I first left Babylon 5..." We had to run that back a few times to make sure we'd heard it right. Yup. Even back then, the idea was in JMS's head in one form or another.

Great show, great concept‼️ My friend’s mom was working at Mattel at the time so we got first dibs on testing the toys…and man they were solid! The VHS training tapes were DOPE. They were anime style from what I remember. The show itself was ambitious, very dark it didn’t look cheap, I never missed it. The CGI by today’s standards looks weak but back then it was unlike anything on television. I still think it holds up because the actors took it serious and didn’t cheese it up. The 80’s were a great era for innovative toys. They pushed boundaries with what little tech they had.

This show was definitely way ahead of its time in many respects. The whole post apocalyptic setting plus the darker (kinda mature-ish) tone of the series despite being mainly a kids show (like Star Wars with a good measure of The Terminator thrown into the mix), this sort of stuff wouldn't be seen better developed and received until well into the 1990's. The CGI was awful, most definitely; but this was back in 1987 and it was a TV show that didn't have the budget of a Hollywood blockbuster (and still was expensive to produce regardless of that).
@viowave2 жыл бұрын
The CGI might look awefull but as a kid Soaron scarred the hell out of me. So was Blasstar. I always thought that they were digital being transferred to reality. Hench their abillity to digitise ... With all due respect... I agree the show is a product of its time, but remember the case of Battlestar Galactica. The reboot is a totally different nature of a show, I think Captain Power could do well with a remake in such style. I was a pre-teen, growing up in post-soviet, early 90s Belarus when state TV showed this series. Everyone was glued to a TV, kids mostly, and we thought the CGI was good. Hi! I am glad someone makes these documentaries. I was a kid when they aired this show in in Bulgaria. But the beginning of the 90's was an experimental stage in my country anyway. It was captivating watching the CGI and never thought about the quality. Apart from the business side, now I realize how ahead of its time was the thinking of the public broadcaster. Which is worth mentioning given the fact that now nobody remembers watching the show in Bulgarian.

I loved this show for a lot of reasons, but the biggest one is that it was a "children's show" that didn't talk down to children. Subjects included war, child abandonment, totalitarianism (my dad said that Lord Dread sounded like Hitler,) torture, oppression and genocide. Miles away from the sanitized content that pretty much every other show aimed at kids had back in 86. Adult me will be eternally grateful to JMS and the other creators for making a grown-up show that ten year old me could understand and learn from.

The show was great and I never got the toys as a kid. Cgi was weak, look at the Hercules shows in the 90s, it just takes time. A few years back, I went to a Captain Power signing at a store, I parked in the alley at the side of the store. There was a nice car that parked across from me. Out of it came a massive guy in a suit. I noticed we were walking to the same store, I thought, "Is it?" Yup, it was Tim Dunigan, Captain Power who was so nice, he held the door open so I could enter. Also, there was J. Michael Straczynski, Marc Scott Zircee, Larry DiTillo, another writer, and Robert DeLapp (special effects) and composer, Gary Guttman. Very cool to see them, got my Captain Power comic and DVD set signed, and I went on eBay to buy one of the toys.

During the original run i usually caught the ending credits as it aired too early for me back then. Fortunately YTV aired it in the mid-90's and I was able to enjoy the entire series. For the time it came from this show was amazing, too bad it didn't last more than a season.

When this show was on the air, I wanted some of the toys so bad! My parents wouldn't get any for me until the show was over with. I had one of the bad guy crafts. I had a vhs to use the ship with, but I wish I had more episodes to interact with! What a cool concept for the time.

The full-cgi Bio-Dreads were one of my favorite parts of the series. It might look a bit hokey by today's standards, but back then it was cutting edge stuff that had only been seen in movies like The Last Starfighter and Tron. The rudimentary cgi actually made the Bio-Dreads seem more surreal and menacing. On the other hand, the flying effects for the Jumpship and Hawk Masterson were truly awful. Flaws aside, I still love this series. CP is just another example of a great show that was killed off before its time.

Loved this show here in Italy when I was a child in the 80's. Had the toys too and loved them too! The CGI aged bad, but it was cool at that time for a kid 🎬🎥👍

The toys worked just fine for me. I had the Powerjet XT-7, Dread's fighter and a anti-aircraft gun/throne called the Interlocker. All of them scored points when shooting the proper flashing targets and to avoid ejection you were supposed to pull away to "dodge" the incoming blasts. The problem with the show wasn't the technology, but its poor distribution and random timeslots. It was bounced around the schedule so much it became difficult to find. I ended up recording several of the episodes in Spanish off UNIVISION just to be able to see them!

You missed something about the Toys, 1st the toys can fight each other and it was super fun. 2nd There were 3 VHS animated movies just to play and they were awesome, produced in POV with tunnels, ships firing to you and the intro was with Captain Power himself in live.

I remember having a few tapes with episodes as well as the toys. One of those tapes also had the California Raisins Christmas special.

Captain Power was way better than Power Rangers. The kiddie attempts at comedy in Power Rangers made it impossible for adults to take it seriously. Captain Power had real acting, drama and dark stories. Captain Power was like the 1989 Batman. Power Rangers was the Adam West 60s Batman. The CG effects look awful now (like.all CGI from 1987), but was amazing to see back then, especially on TV. The actors killed it and played their roles seriously. They elevated the material. But the title, even the gold costumes look silly now. Still love it though. They had amazing VHS tapes designed for the toys. Some of the best anime cartoons back then (people called it japanimation then). Search for Captain Power Training Level 1 on KZbin.

The show was probably the closest we would get to a terminator dark future series. I cannot think of a worse fate than being digitized and absorbed into the machine consciousness. Although the action series were a bit disjointed at times, the characters both protagonist and antagonist forces are memorable and i could recite all the hero characters in the intro. There was a lot of thought placed in the series, I particularly loved Blastar retractable shielding and when he gets beaten or maimed. He would be regenerating. ( I imagined Marvel Days of the Future past character Nimrod had the same ability. During my youth, My mind mixed up the characters from time to time.) There was even a love angle between the heroes. Hopefully, Netflix or the networks can do a reimagining of the franchise.

"Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future" is one of those things that I'd forgotten about for about 35 years until I saw the title of this video on my KZbin feed and it was like, "Oh yeah... I think I vaguely remember that -- some dude with a visor and shiny metallic armor."

The VHS adventure tapes were where it was at w this technology - there were at least three, 75% ANIMATED and w the on screen effects much more functional than on the main show. Once i figured out to tip the plane away from the live action scenes my scores became much better lol. I loved those adventure tapes so much!!

I used to tape the episodes so I could play them over and over. But I remember seeing a news story about parent groups were upset about it because it had a ton of violence and death but also because it wasn’t “fair” for kids who couldn’t afford the toys. Loved it though and my parents never complained about the content. The toy worked great for me. The only time you would get falsely ejected for me was that the transformation scenes triggered the getting shot effect.

I actually still have the complete line of figures and I think this show would get lost in the modern environment of sci-fi shows which is a shame. Probably one of the most ambitious shows of all time - the gimmick was only so that Mattel would help fund the show because of the enormous budgets required at the time.
