8:43 Nobody really cared that he used his staff as a dating pool? Regina sure did. She was incensed by all the laughter his confession got, so Letterman addressed the scandal again, but this time in a more penitent manner (example: "I have a lot to make up for.") Also, at least one ex-employee cared enough to write about her experiences as a "Late Show" staffer, watching those who had relationships with Letterman seem to get preferential treatment. To this day his questionable behaviour during that time is brought up in plenty of comment sections. With regard to Dave never claiming he was not a "scumbag and a cheat": maybe, but for years he publicly mocked other celebrities (like Frank Gifford and Wade Boggs) for philandering. Had the public been aware how Dave was conducting his own personal life while skewering those who'd been unlucky enough to get caught, would they not have seen this as a big double standard on his part? One person who left Dave alone during that uncomfortable period was Jay Leno (who we know could've told endless jokes about Letterman's shenanigans - but chose to be merciful). So it was rather startling just a few months later when the person publicly leading the charge against Jay over the Conan Tonight Show fiasco was none other than Dave Letterman. To see him judging anybody else's morals after what he'd recently been outed for sure looked hypocritical. I never looked at Dave the same way again, and I think his condemnation of Jay had more to do with his own resentment over being NBC's second choice to replace Carson than it did supporting Conan.

Carson didn't speak to Joan Rivers from 1986 until the day he died. Sure, she may have been at one point, but by the time he retired and it was actually time to hand the show over, his choice was Letterman.
