WTF Happened to Dustin Hoffman?

Of all the actors to get caught up in the #MeToo movement, perhaps one of the most surprising was Dustin Hoffman. Back in 2017, when the actor was fresh off of delivering one of his finest latter-day performances in The Meyerowitz Stories, the actor was confronted (some say ambushed) at a 20th-anniversary screening of Wag the Dog by comedian John Oliver, who questioned him about accusations of inappropriate behaviour from thirty years prior on the set of Death of a Salesman. The story went viral, and soon a story about Hoffman’s treatment of Meryl Streep on the set of Kramer vs Kramer also got renewed play, much to Streep’s dismay, who said Hoffman had apologized years earlier, and she accepted that.
In the years since, Hoffman’s career has been low-key, with him only showing up in a few indie and international films, which is a significant comedown for a man who was always considered one of the greatest actors of his generation. Indeed, his filmography is tough to match, with him acting in decades of classics, including The Graduate, Little Big Man, Straw Dogs, Marathon Man, Tootsie, Rain Man, and so many more. Should a few instances of inappropriate behaviour be enough to tarnish his legacy? We dig into his life and career in this episode of WTF Happened to this Celebrity, written by Mathew Plale and edited, narrated and produced by Taylor James Johnson.
Do you think Dustin Hoffman’s legacy has been marred? Let us know in the comments!

Something NICE about Hoffman: My friend, Nestor Almendros was the cinematographer for KRAMER... When Hoffman and director Robert Benton learned how little Nestor was being paid (after having won an Oscar!) without telling him, they gave Nestor a fraction of their profit points from the film. After the film was a huge hit, Nestor got a giant check out of nowhere - so much so that he was able to buy a loft in NYC. Nestor worked with them both again on his final film, Billy Bathgate.

Kind of skipped past the Hoffman left THE PRODUCERS to star in THE GRADUATE with Mel Brooks' wife, Anne Bancroft. In his memoir, TOOTSIE screenwriter Larry Gelbart details what a pain he was - "Never work with an Oscar winner shorter than his statue."

That being said, my number one favorite character of his is Mr. Bergstrom from Lisa’s substitute. Robert De Niro and Al Pacino and Dustin remain three of the best film actors of all time. They really are living legends. Which is why it is such a heartbreaker that his legacy is tarnished by how he supposedly behaved. If he is guilty of that type of behavior, then obviously, he needs to take accountability for it. It’s just really disappointing if it’s true.

DeNiro and Pacino? Best living actors? Buahahaha More like actors who play the same characters over and over. They will be in anything for a pay check. They live off a couple of roles they did 30 years ago. At this point they're both caricature of themselves.

Ishtar is a bona-fide cult classic. The opening scene alone is iconic for it's painfully accurate depiction of the songwriting process (songs for the film masterfully written by the great Paul Williams). Hating Ishtar is like hating Nickelback, it's a received opinion based on pop-culture trope. I'll go one further and bet that the writer of this episode has never watched Ishtar. 🎤 PS Great channel, great content I look forward to watching everyday. I agree, as much as I love his early movies, his behavior is unacceptable. He was a huge movie star and it was the ‘70s, women couldn’t say anything against powerful men and even if they did nobody would believe them. Method acting is just a lame excuse to mistreat and abuse costars, I bet if he had hit De Niro he would’ve ended up in the emergency room, that would’ve been pretty awesome.

Dustin Hoffman is a stage and screen actor who rose to prominence in the late 1960's for his roles in films like _The Graduate_ and _Midnight Cowboy._ after many nominations, both he and co-star Meryl Streep won Oscars for their leading role in _Kramer vs. Kramer._ Hoffman won again in 1989 for his lead role as the mentally-challenged brother of actor Tom Cruise in _Rain Man._ he has gone on to play many differing and challenging roles over his long career. one time I believe it was said he groped somebody un-invited while they were both onstage, once. if true, that's no good. he also received some amount of mockery for his role as Captain James Hook in Steven Spielberg's box office under-performer _Hook,_ though the role and indeed that film's reception has increased dramatically in the years since its release. in closing, Dustin Hoffman's place is assured on the lists of the most accomplished actors of his generation in the years and decades to come. The End. done. and you don't even need to watch the video. or buy a t-shirt!
