The word 'Lancia' in the automotive world brings up an array of different emotions. On one hand, they're known for falling apart and rusting away. But they've also been known for their incredible cars and nigh-on impeccable record in rallying. Today however, they sell only one car and are hardly seen outside of Italy. What the hell happened to them?

The Delta s4 was a group B car, whose accident with Toivonen driving in the Tour de Corse caused the death of the group B regulation. The Delta HF integrale was the group A car that was so dominant in the late 80s and early 90s.

As soon as I heard this I know then this guy did not have a clue. To be fear he said in the video he did not know about cars himself. Odd choice of video subject then. And quiet a few errors on the Stratos also.

Formula 1 had the JPS Lotus Sportscar racing had the Rothmans Porsche Rallying had the Martini Lancia

@@alc-d4163 could be that I’m weird but whenever I think of Rothmans in motor racing, I think of Williams. For me, Gulf-Porsche is the more iconic Le Mans duo. But for rallying it will always be Lancia-Martini or Subaru-555.

6:59 Group B was never going to live past 1986, the class was planned to be replacement by Group S which was Group B but with a 300HP limit and a *lot* of makes already had cars nearing completion but Toivonen fatal crash scrapped Group S.

The S4 only competed in the ‘86 season to replace the 037 model that was, as correctly pointed out, outdated against Peugeot and Audi. Starting in 1987 with the ban of Group B, the Delta model was used instead. And it proved to be a winner. Great video.

The S4 was a Group B car and released in 85 or 86. In 87, the Group B class was killed and WRC moved to Group A regulations thus making Lancia build the Delta Integrale which gave Lancia many wins in WRC.

It’s worth mentioning that Fiat, in their infinite wisdom, tried to sell the rebadged Chrysler 300 in Europe as the Lancia Thema. Talk about a brand identity crisis…

​@@martijnp4313 Errr the Dialogos concept car which inspired the Thesis was beautiful. I'm afraid the Thesis is a botch job in comparison. Insurance companies warned that unless the front grill was raised out of harms way from parking dings, they'd place the production car in a higher insurance bracket than its rivals. Limp-wristed Lancia management forced the designers to comply. Not satisfied with that, internal management meddling also put paid to the svelte shoulder creases and character lines on the Dialogos, which reduced to slab-sided nothingness on the Thesis. All on the whim of the design illiterate Lancia CEO! Tragedy.

the delta s4 was 1986 , debut on the RAC Rally in 1985. After 1986 it became group A with the delta intergrale

This history lesson is good for the most part except the Delta S4 section: That's a Group B car, with engine mounted behind the driver. The car that won the 1987 - 92 WRC was the Delta HF 4WD, based on the road car, with engine at the front.

Italian here, and every car guy I know wants or Lancia to close as a hero or wish Lancia make an actual decent sport car. Also the Lancia Delta Integrale HF is still loved, also called "The Queen".

Dude, the Delta S4 didn't run in 1987, it was the group B car. It was the "regular" Delta that went winning onwards

Lancia Delta S4 is a group B introduced in late 85, and won several rallys in 86. End of group B in 86 and they put the delta hf turbo and integral in the following years, the car that won the championships was the delta integral, not the S4. The S4 is a group B

Alberto Ascari died while testing a Ferrari 750 Monza at Monza's Eni Circuit, not in a Lancia D50 - it was a natural metal coloured car and there are numerous photographs and video of the car after the accident, where the Ferrari badge is visible. He was due to drive this car with Eugenio Castellotti at the 1000km Of Monza Endurance Race that season. Ascari's death was one of the factors that lead to Lancia pulling out of F1.

Bruh, the s4 was the group b car. it was an s4 crash that caused the end of group b, it was actually the integrale that raced in group a and won 6 years in a row.

Ascari tested a Ferrari sportscar not the D50 in Monza. Also great to correct the Grand Tour fantasy segment on the 1983 season but the "showing the same cars twice" trick is just an urban legend and didn't actually happen. Also also by 1983 no one had 4WD except Audi so the 037 wasn't anachronism but rather a look into the future of what Group B regulations would allow. Also also also mentioning Röhrl but not THE Lancia/Abarth driver Alen? Dissapointing.

I feel they went the same way than Mitsubishi, another famous rally brand....seems like rally inspired cars just don´t sell like before (and cheers to Subaru for keeping the Impreza and WRX in production)

Because Lancia had 0 good cars that weren't motorsportsesque and kept putting out Deltas over again for a few years which imo hurt their brand because they weren't making anything else notable other than Deltas. Mitsubishi still makes motorsports vehicles and sports cars. Group B was basically Lancia's life support tbh, they couldn't build a name for themselves as a car manufacturer but as a brand/team they did.

Lancia is about to get rebirth by Stellantis, this time serious plan and already financed. Rumored to include new Ypsilon, B EV SUV called Musa and new Delta ( perhaps we get HF )

Luckily Stellantis now actually has a plan for Lancia, already having three models coming up, I just hope they don’t modernise and make a new Ypsilon, but a new Delta or a Beta or a Monte Carlo, or a whatever, just new Lancia models, make then good please Stellantis!! Edit: he mentioned it. Also, Lancia was literally known as the luxury Alfa, so if Stellantis is going back to that, then the DS (which is super lux) and Alfa (which is sporty) joined innovation and experimentation should lead to new luxury sportscars

Small correction. The Delta S4 was brought out in 1986, with the accident involving it and Henri Toivonen being the nail in the coffin for Group B. With the departing Group B rules for 1987, Lancia redesigned the Delta almost completely to make the Delta HF, which dominated the early years of the Group A rules.

It is indeed the perfect way of pronouncing lancia :D but integrale was not :D Also as for rally, as it stands in the WRC there has to be a works team for a team to use a WRC car(called R1 from next year),that's why despite the citroen C3 WRC car existing,there are no WRC teams using it,as Citroen itself pulled out. They could however make R5 cars for WRC 2 and 3(or R2 as its going to be next year),as those don't require there to be a works team as well.

Well, "Ypsilon" is just the name of the letter Y that many european languages gave to it (German, for example). Maybe it's a way to establish, that the Ypsilon is a waaaay more advanced car than the Alpha or Lambda (coz, they're also letters). Just a hunch, tho.

I'll always remember Lancia primarily for the fact that the Delta Integrale was one of two WRC cars chosen to be in the greatest arcade racer ever, Sega Rally Championship 1995.

The s4 was a group B rally car not a group A. It was released in 1985 mid season and it was the last group B Lancia. In 1987 the delta integrale was released. So the integrale was it's first and only group A car.

Yeah I think he sort of merged the two together - Lancia lost the 1986 WRC championship to Peugeot and the S4 never won a championship.

@@jamwil200 i reckon your right about what he did, but I'm not Shure it make a lot of sense. the delta is a totally custom silhouette racer with zero part shared with the normal delta. the group A Lancia's were very similar to the already extant 4wd deltas with the addition of a few small items and tweaks.

Fun fact they went called the integrale until the 88 season before that in 87 they were the 4wd HF (there are slight differences in the cars with the intergrale version not showing up till the third round in Portugal.)

@@jamwil200 Yeah but the S4 was still the fastest group b lancia. It could challange the Peugeot but after Henri Toivonen died in Corsica Markku Alén was the leading the championship with Lancia. And Alén "won" the championship. But he found out just over week later that he had lost the championship to Juha Kankkunen because the sanremo rally was not counted as a official wrc rally championship event because the Peugeot's were disqualified for almost no reason. Alén lost lots of points because he had won the rally so Kankkunen with his peugeot won the championship. Mayby Toivonen could have one the Peugeot's because he was fighting for the campionship from the beginning of the season after winning some rallies in 1986.

7:24 that's still a group b car. Hell, lancia didn't even use the S4 for group a. They used an integrale.

Ypsilon is how "Y" is pronounced in Greek. (And many other languages) Keeping in tradition with naming cars using Greek alphabet. Alpha Beta Gama Delta Theta Ypsilon Etc. 😀

@@joeogle7729 Yes they did. However, Lancia has made more ugly looking cars than stunning ones, over the years. Even the legendary Delta Integrale looked ugly in it's base form. It started looking good only after body kit was slapped onto it. 😕

The Delta S4 was gone after 1986 as it was a Group B car. In was the Integrale that took over 1987 on. You show an S4 until you say 1990 which is when you start showing the Integrale. The S4 only ran in part of 85 and 1986.

Side note: The Lancia Delta S4 was the twin charged group B monster. It was the HF 4WD that was the dominant Group A variant of the car. Love Lancia, best car make ever.

Dude fact check maybe next time?! The S4 was the Group B that was cancelled after 1986. The HF, HF Integrale 8V, HF Integrale 16V, Integrale Evo and Integrale Evo II were the Deltas that dominated from 87 till 92.

Lancia nowadays also produced 3rd gen Delta since 2008, and a 2nd gen Thema which is literally a rebadged Chrysler 300C Another one would the original Thema that has a unique trim: 8.32 which has 2.9L V8 engine from Ferrari 308 GTS/GTB/GT4, even though the car is front wheel drive
