Well, it tells you a lot more in what you are doing. I mean, t gives you more information when you are doing something wrong. Also, there's a new hint system in when you make more game in a certain category you can do a report on what worked and what didn't. That kind of goes along with it telling you more. Another thing added is mod support. This is a big addition as there are dozens of mods for this game that add so much more. People have added more topics, systems, researches, achievements, and even a cheat system. Another guy is even adding multiplayers support. Some minor things added are longer title names and multi-platform support. So, there's about everything that has been added.

Everybody consider the fact that this game has REALLY changed since this WTF is... it has loads of updates, a lot of new content and much more. They tell you better about the faults you made while in development, longer game names, multi-platform and a lot more! This review isn't really 'good' anymore at this time, it's basically outdated.
@LastAmerican6
@LastAmerican6 11 жыл бұрын
I reinstalled it today after reading your comment, and I didn't get very far for lack of patience, but it didn't seem very much different at all. I noticed the new game reports that gave you a more comprehensive idea of what you could do better and the little +'s and -'s below some of the categories to indicate importance. Unfortunately, a great many of these were followed by a '?' which made it even more of a gamble to adjust the indicated field and was often entirely wrong. I do suppose playing farther would increase the reliability of the indicators, but the garage stage seems too luck-based to encourage play passed that point. Unless they keep adding more detailed information for early on, the changes won't count for much.
@MinecraftLineLiar
@MinecraftLineLiar 11 жыл бұрын
LastAmerican6 I didn't mean a lot of changed on the 'know what you're doing'-part. A lot of things have changed there, added and removed. The things where I was talking about were things like multi-platform and other things. Go to this link and see what all has changed (look at 1.4.0, that's where I was talking about mostly, others are more changes then added): www.greenheartgames.com/game-dev-tycoon-changelog/ You can also try using some mods to enhance your experience. You can just go to www.forum.greenheartgames.com and find mods in the 'Official Mod List'. Of course Mod Supports also wasn't there yet in TB's review.

This game is pretty trash for a single reason: It bases how good a game is on how good your last one was. So if you want to make a *really* good game because you just made a ton of cash, you're actually chopping off your own hands. You won't have enough money afterwards to outdo that game and therefore lose. The game mechanics are terrible.

hey TotalBiscuit. I think they updated the game. I just bought it and there are new features. Now you can make "Game Reports" which tell you why a game was good or bad. Those unlock hints which are always displayed when you develop a new game so you know what you made bad last time. Also you can go to the "Help" menu, where they explain to you what exactly "World Design" and stuff means. So both problems for you are actually gone now more or less. Maybe give it another try!

A lot of people are commenting about the 'generate game report' in the new patch. Even that isn't totally useful, it tells you extremely generic stuff. The game revolves around using common sense for the sliders and the reviews are based on those sliders. Also at later stages you don't want to put a design dev in something technical and vice versa. The reviews definitely have a somewhat random element to them but there kinda based on the sliders too. You can't make 10/10 games all the time but generally if you have common sense with the sliders you'll be successful.

Just came back to this recently. Seems like they've tried to address some of TB's concerns about the lack of feedback. You can now generate a 'game report' after you release a game which gives insights into what things are important for a genre. That info is then displayed on the UI every time you make a game, telling you which factors are important. You can also import the knowledge when you start a new game, it seems pretty good so far.

While I agree with TB, that it's not clear enough what the sliders effect, the tutorial does mention, that you can find a description of them in the help menu. It's not highlighted enough in the game, but it's there.

They're making it a lot better in more recent updates. ONe idea that's being worked on is being able to hire test audiences to get more detailed info on areas the game is lacking BEFORE release, and giving you the opportunity to retune things, for a fee, depending on how many stages you wanted to redo and the accuracy of the audience based on the size of the audience you hired. Also tweaking how some calculations and system affinities are handled.

No because you earned the information to 'play well'. Knowing all the recipes in SotS: The Pit doesn't take any of the challenge away. You just smile and are happy you have them figured out, to make future playthroughs easier. Also as I mentioned, they are stored for you to look up. Sure there is always 'meta game' information, but gimping yourself because you want to 'role play' doesn't always make sense. If it's my 10th time playing through the game, I want to do well from the start.

I am not a developer but I imagine that it may not so much hard but it takes a ton of effort to script, create art style that suits the game, test it, fix bugs (most likely a rinse and repeat) then you gotta adjust the art style as it may change during the gameplay, add finishing touches, test it and see if there are any bugs left.

Nice score but if you want to know what being in charge of a game dev company is really like, try the GameBiz series. It has stocks, Rival Companies, Publishing Deals with your Console, and there is even consumer demand where you have to time the release of your game just right or it'll lose to other competitors's games.

Obviously Greenheart Games listened to the fans. The Steam release of Game Dev Tycoon gives you a choice to generate game reports after release, which give you more feedback on what worked and what didn't, which will give you more advice on development in the future. They also increased the number of characters available for naming your games, although it's still not ENOUGH characters :p
@xenxander
@xenxander 11 жыл бұрын
The best way to deal with that is NOT to listen to the tutorial that says "don't try to fill up spaces right away". move into the office when you have about 4+million from your garage. Also don't move out until you've finished your first real game engine (say an engine with an update to graphics and sound). Then hire everyone right away (minimal amount to scout, IE 20K, find average peeps) Then use your engine right away to make a high budget game. If you're lucky (or wiki it) you'll be fine

Having played Game Dev Tycoon or whatever Kairosoft's game is (which I believe is based off an older game?), it looks pretty samey, just with a snazzier UI. It would have been nice to see a bigger mix up. Even the bits that are significantly different from what I can see, seem to have the same problems (as in, lack of feedback from reviewers and the amount of effort you put into different stages of development). That said, even if it were a blatant copy it'd be still enjoyable.

For those thinking of trying it ..some important tips ..Always go for new combo , great combo on the topic ...and always strive to get " new record " for tech and game design ...or at least one of them ...if you don't get a new record your game will almost 100% of the time get an average review ..also notice if you get new records + level up in several categories such as game design or graphics you will almost always have a hit game ...

Size doesn't change what you can fit into the sliders. When it comes to adding features to your game, there's no way to take your time and implement them if you have the funds to do it. So you want to have 3d V5 and Surround Sound with Orchestral Music? Well you can't do that without it seriously harming the quality of your release. And MMO's in this game don't get subscriptions to cover maintenance as far as I can tell. I had a top seller MMO W/ Top expansions, didn't see those results at all.

As an indie developer I under stand why the game chooses not to give good feed back in the reviews, they are more meant for you to predict your sales ahead of time and plan ahead. You are supposed to generate the reports for your games after each one to get the slightly more detailed information. Failing to do so looses you out on basic understanding of whats good and not, and some easy research points for better engines later. If you understand the Industry terms a bit than it really is common sense for the player. You can easily make a 20 Mil game right off the bat on the 1st time playing if you just know the vocab and know what part of game development that really means. The game follows perfect logic if you are looking at it as a developer, not if you are looking at it like a reviewer just grinding a game.

Saying it isn't theft is saying it's something else but still doesn't make it right or lawful. And never did I myself say it wasn't theft because plagiarism is another matter, so that second paragraph didn't do anything to prove that it's justification, it's people assuming it's something else but saying it still doesn't make it right. I'd call piracy a method of obstructing traditional trade and authorization, therefore theft so I agree, but not on the justification point.

Playing this game with wiki assures the win so its not entirely "you don't know" thing. You just have to play it long enough to know it strait through. For instance contracts at the beginning are total bs cause of randomness BUT later on you can estimate them with very good completion ratio.

You seem to have overlooked the fact that the 'help' menu actually tells you what each of the sliders does, for example, world design is backstory, etc., whereas level design envelops things such as the layout of the tracks in a racing game for example. I can't say most of this criticism is fair. As you said yourself, this is the first game made by two people. And at the end of the day, a good game is one that keeps you playing, and it certainly seems to have kept you enthralled.

Just graduated from a gaming degree at university, I dont think you understand how much work goes into making games, for example call of duty gets released each year with thousands of people making the one game of which they just use the same engine which means half of their work is done for them! They have to have two development studios of hundreds of people to be able to do this!

There was pretty much zero marketing before the release of the game on torrent or for purchase. The release of the game on torrent sites was marketing and so was the outcome but i was referring to pre-release marketing. The person i was replying to was also referring to zero pre-release marketing as a reason for why people went on pirate sites to find out.

I wanted that too... heh... You CAN make expansion for MMOs you make down the line, though (it's required, or the maintenance costs rise above the earnings)

'World design' is backstory and lore to the world. The game tells you this in the help section of the menu.

Actually, no. There was a PC version of GDS made 16 years ago that had more formulas and customization than the iOS/Android version, which is 3 years old. And there's a PC version of GDS2, but only in Japanese. Inspiration goes to a point before it becomes ripping off, and the way GDT unfolds and works would hint that line was crossed.

totally agree with you. Lot of room for improvement. I really want a full blown tycoon game on game development

Once you figure out the wiki has cracked the system to making every type of games re: sliders. i.e. you generally have to max 2/3 per section. Then there's no challenge left to this game.

It's weird. You'd think world design and level design would be the same thing, they even sound the same, but in this game (according to the help section), world design leans more on the story-side, specifically the back-story or the "lore", whereas level design is related to object placements and how the place looks.

It's a shame Past Games doesn't record the game's Design / Tech scores, because the that's actually critical information as to how well your next games are going to do. The idea that they're indirectly compared to past top performer(s) is sensible enough (though the algorithm itself is a bit more wonky, that's the basic gameplay mechanic). Such basic info would greatly improve the player's planning ability without spoiling anything.
