I really like this game, mainly because I feel like it's a lot different from the other sandbox games. GTA and Sleeping Dogs are all bogged down with realism, and sometimes I just want to climb out of my car, flip it upside down, and run at super-speed through a crowd of aliens. It just feels nice.

At that time they only started to make the story, not the game itself. That's how it's done - the game comes out with a new engine (RAGE in GTA IV for example) and then GTA V is built on it.

you know, in saints row 2 they killed a character named carlos who had only had maybe 30 min of screen time and I very nearly cried. Saints row 3 they killed one of the staple (and my favorite) characters and I didn't give a shit. I think that says something about the quality of the writing. I saints row 2 was amazing beacuse it had badass over the top moments but still could be hard hitting and grounded.

I agree with my Saints not having super powers. But later in the game, you can do loyalty missions for them and they will eventually gain superpowers after you complete them. And that is absolutely required to get the best ending too for no other reason other than making Mass Effect references.

Fortunately I found SR4 without ever playing any of the SR games. It was pretty fun although your character gets really powerful quite quickly. I do agree though they should have named this different so the original SR fans could know what to expect instead of another SR clone.

to be honest it is a bit repetative in the quests. If you would like to feel like a super hero in the game though it is pretty fun with a tongue in cheek story. The game is not very long if you stick to the story and skip side quests and gathering achievements.

He was playing the Pre-release of the game, which made the bugs understandable and mostly fixed by the official launch of the game. He was Partly wrong about your homies not having super powers. He wasn't at the right point in the game to be able to unlock the story characters powers, which sucks that it wasn't an option sooner in the game. I played SR4 for about 65 hours (on hardcore difficulty). That's how long it took me to finish all quests, find every single collectible and cluster in the game, and complete all of the challenges. I like to be thorough. :)

Within the first minute of explaining the story, I dislike it. At least Saints Row 3 was still somewhat normal world and stuff. I'm not saying I think it's a bad idea, it's just..weird. The idea seems better suited for a DLC like they originally intended. The fact that it was original intended as a DLC is made OBVIOUS by the fact that it feels unfinished. Gangs being pointless, vehicles being pointless other than as background stuff, etc. It's exactly like it is, and what's been said. It feels like it was meant as some side set of missions for SR3, where you get sent into some VR thing with mini-games and whatnot. I'm really hoping they take SR4 as a spinoff, and don't try to continue this idea onto future Saints Row games. I'd prefer the series stay similar to 3 honestly. GTA but weird and insane. Not Virtual Reality with super powers and aliens. If I wanted an open world game with super powers, I'd play Crackdown. Hell, Crackdown even has the rooftop glowy collectibles and car throwing.. You mentioned that some people would "embrace" thiss tyle of game, and other people(probably ones that like the other SR games more) won't because they want more realistic stuff. See, that's the thing. I'm perfectly fine having unrealistic guns, and items, and whatever. That's why I think Saints Row 3 is probably the best way to go. It has the realism in that, it's in a normal world, with normal cars, and normal guns. But then it also takes place in the very near future, with slightly futuristic stuff, and some 'weird' and fun stuff that's a little less realistic. So it has ALL of that stuff. Realism, futuristic stuff, and weird over the top stuff. SR4 is just.. all weird, all super powers, all over the top. I think it's a bit TOO much. People that enjoyed the first 3 Saints Row games, probably enjoyed them because they had that bit of realism to them. I don't even mind the "nerdy" stuff you mentioned. I just..need SOME realism to my games, even if it's not much. I mean come on, the color of the world isn't even realistic. It all has a blueish tint and tron look to it. I mean, I MIGHT be able to have a little fun with it, but there's no way I'd pay $20+ for it. If it was $10, maybe.

From looking at the video and this comment section it appears no-one (including TB) actually understands that this game is a parody of pop culture, movies and games. It isn't inspired by crackdown/matrix/prototype, it IS those games intentionally. All the ideas are brought together in one ridiculous soup of awesomeness. You're supposed to revel in how little sense everything makes, the game intentionally points out its own plot holes because those exact plot holes existed in the movie/game that its making fun of. Half of the game is realizing all the references it makes, not trying to figure out which games this "Superhero gangster game" is taking from, because it isn't that at all. If you knew that you wouldn't have a problem with this "identity crisis", which reality... doesn't exist.

If you do Loyalty Side quest for each character they will get super powers.

After you reach a certain number of challenges it unlocks superpowers for your Saints backup. Crew member superpowers unlock in campaign missions. Calling in super powered backup is very helpful when you're unlocking kill challenges.

Decided to buy the game last week, definitely worth it especially with all the DLC. I Own all the previous games & therefor i waited so long to buy this because I was sceptic at first. While Saints Row has changed, it actually hasn't. It keeps pushing the limits like the previous ones. The thing about this game that makes it so great is that it is so positive, when u play it u will notice trough the soundtrack it's almost all positive music! The story is funny as usual, and u will notice that it distances itself from GTA so far now u can't compare them anymore.

They must have fixed the NVidia graphics issue because it runs beautifully on my machine, but then I only bought it recently when it was on sale at Steam. And you're right about the faults. I had no idea it was a former DLC turned full game, that makes a lot more sense now. It's nice to see someone shred a game where it needs shredded and then come right back around and point out that it is pure, mindless fun. Sadly, SR4 takes a backseat at the moment to my other distractions, but I've already burned some hours just doing things like running around collecting clusters while listening to podcasts... because I can, and the game gives zero shits what I do spending my time in it. One of these days I'll actually have to try advancing the story missions, been trying to settle on a character after creating three and one complaint I have is how all the guys are now beefy, burly men even on skinniest setting. I miss my slender Asian crossdresser dude who sounded like Antonio Banderas on crack (as per my Saints Row 2 game I still occasionally play on console). He looked absolutely hilarious putting the smackdown on thugs while wearing a dress, striped stockings, heels, and a fedora.

The argument that powers are too OP or that they make vehicles pointless... It is still your choice... You are not forced to press the run button, or the super jump, or any of the other abilities... They are completely optional except for the occasional warden or if you actually care to grab the clusters or if you need to in the story... Other than that... You can play the entire game via driving or flying in a plane/ship

about the landscape: after you completed the story you can change the weather to sunshine and whatsoever. The city is basically the same, but your hideouts have been removed by your enemy and some buildings have changed, like the "hallway'ed skyscraper" north of the central park has been replaced. The pixel-fading is very annoying after a while, especially if you just designed your new car and want to take a look at it and it fades every 2-3 seconds for 1 second.

Considering the many downsides (most of them making this looks like an easy cash grab) that are strong competition against the fun factor, and the fact that this game is now almost a year old, a 75% Steam discount resulting in not 5, but 10 EUR (and that's without any DLC) was not able to convince me to buy it, especially if I look at the pricing of various other 'troubled' games. The approach of this game seems to be somewhat related to Goat Simulator. After all though, I'm not a passionate gamer anymore, so maybe I'm judging this to harshly.

For anyone who still hasn't bought this, at the end of the game you can change the time of day. Also, there is a cheat system if you're into that sort of thing. Took me 40 hours to complete on normal with all side missions complete and some side tracking.

what he was trying to say with the gang members is not the fact that they can get super powers but the fact that you really don't need the help. its not like in sr3 where you need massive backup and help form the npc's to deal with enemies. like he showed in the video he can fairly easily take on the enemies himself without help from npc's.

Mother of God... SR4 is Prototype. A lot of the nifty superpowers (running, jumping, the power jump, gliding through the air, etc) all look just like Mercer's. Killing civilians for health, and even the extremeness of the melee kill's reminds me of prototype.

Saint Row 4 is optimized for PC? Never experienced extreme framedrops with it, got 60FPS at lowest. For me it runs smooth on 95FPS and I use 2 amd gpu's, so I think this problem only occures for Nvidia gpu owners?

the "triple dots" you're speaking about are called ellipsis, they denote a pause in speech where one trails off without quite giving a definitive punctuation. So not much "mental" or "dramatic" as slow speaking, confused, or "at a loss for words"

how to balance saints row 4 to make cars and saints useful: Remove gliding and wall jumping so you still need helicopters and airplanes to reach exceptionally high places. Make it so cars won't move out of the way when you hit them and you trip up when you do. Make it so when you use nitrous, you can go through anything. get rid of ninja reflexes. give the saints the same speed and super jumping you do, some of the non splash damage powers, and about half of your health.

This seems to be a visual issue that they didn't fix at higher resolutions which causes all the doors to start closing at the same time instead of set-by-set. You just need to lower your resolution for this one mission; it worked for me. Hope this helps!

Health regen is still around, but for one thing, it happens really slowly in combat, which is just as welcome. Believe me, in the end of the game shit gets hardcore real fast. I usually go after the Golden CID so I won't get killed by swarms of shielded Murderbots.

You can super homies to actualy make them useful, for difficulty theres a rolly ball enemy that is almost invincible to any attack, wardens and you don't have use super powers all the time it's not forcing you to do it you do if you want

Nice review but a bit early in the game as some things unlock later. The main homies (Pierce, Kinzie, Shaundi, etc) get super powers when you complete their loyalty mission, the others like the former enemies that become homies and the generics don't have any powers. The eternal night can be changed after completing the main story. But I do agree with the assessment of melee weapons, my favorite weapon from SR3 isn't in this, the chainsaw, as well as Killbane's fists (unnecessary with powers).

Downloaded after watching this. Was very fun, played it multiple times a day. Takes around 20 hours to complete all the missions (~90% of the game), and then you can look for collectibles and do sidequests. It's really fun to play with the superpowers, gets a bit annoying when you have to do the few missions without them. All in all, enjoyable.

Think he should have completed the game first because that would fix many of the problems he had. Eg ground stomp and death from above affect people when landing (Love the nuke explosion on level 50 upgrade). And the day night issue improves

Landing on the ground from high up really wouldn't leave an impact crater... unless you weight a ton. I think if you landed on a car that'd make sense to break it, but not concrete.

Although it's harder to die in the early stages, is easier in the later ones, as there's way less immunity to damage. SR3 had immunity to everything, until you could eventually survive anything but Brute attacks and being inside a car exploding. In SR4, you only get immunity to fire. For the other stuff is just resistances. But hey, you can survive being inside car exploding now with resistance to explosions. Oh, and the golden CIDs do not take over areas. They just remove notoriety.

The story is definately longer than NFS The Run, there are 12 different superpowers and aditional skills that are really fun to use. Your companions actually are of some use and if you put a lot of effort into challenges, or at least do the loyalty missions, they will make a real difference. Guns are a must, because superpowers are strong, but when it comes to precise massmurder you'll probably wanna try the double subs or the merica (hell's that thing crazy)

Saints Row 4 is a rather good game. My only complaints are: 1) Re-using the same game world isn't so bad because of how you can now move through the environment, but it does make things a bit less fun since you already explored it all if you played SR3. 2) An open-world vehicular game is a little odd when you can start running faster and jumping further than any vehicle can by already the first ten minutes. Otherwise, it surprised me in that it actually is not just SR3 re-skinned.

I don't know if you know this, or if you even care, but the "named" support characters CAN get Superpowers ;) It makes them quite helpful, also they can keep up with your speed (even maxed speed).
