13:58 this is why transients are one of the most important yet overlooked elements in sound design for synth patches. A quick, almost imperceptible burst of noise, filter sweep, pitch warble, wavefolder, etc at the start of a sound will do wonders to giving a patch a more musical feel and less like electronic farts.

wowee, i can imagine how much time and effort it took to put this vid together! amazing job and very interesting, thx!
@Nicoya2 ай бұрын
Harmonics and sidebands are actually two separate phenomenon. Harmonics are signals that repeat at rational multiples of the fundamental frequency (usually integral multiples), whereas sidebands are signals that appear when you multiply together (aka modulate) signals of different frequencies; you get one sideband at the sum of the two frequencies and one sideband at the difference of the two frequencies, the upper and lower sidebands respectively. Of course these sidebands may then have their own harmonics.

This question was fundamentally answered by an episode of Star Trek TNG. Commander Troi asked Commander Data to make a clay sculpture representing music, and Data complained that music was just a series of sounds manifest as reverberations. But Troi was like, sculpt how the music makes you feel, show me what music looks like! So Data sculpted a mask that turned out to be the avatar of an ancient evil sun goddess who tormented a race of aliens inside a floating ice comet that had the ability to transform the enterprise into a death cult temple erected to appease the cruel goddess and lull her back to sleep so she would no longer torture them.... Sound!

Wow, this video is deep and informative, man. And also, fun to listen with the smol jokes here and there. It's a pity X-Stream won't work in my box (I have to use WINE as this is a Linux box) so I'll have to look for alternatives. It's sad because those presets sound amazing!

I need to stop 2 minutes in to say "smooth null friend" absolutely killed me. You little devil, sneaking this stuff in ;) Anyway, let's get round to the rest of the video. I'm especially interested to learn how this is different from traditional additive synthesis, or Synclavier's resynthesis (where the additive components are individually shifted and altered, which does seem quite similar from that little clip of the Steinberg software.)

What's always blown my mind a bit is that fundamentals are sine waves and sine waves are literally the sound of a circle. You're literally hearing what electricity moving in a circle sound likes. And then you can also make virtually any sound imaginable by adding up the sounds of circles at different volumes over time. Fucking circles dude!!

I freaking love that whole track, but especially that chill melodic cool-jazz kinda intro. Great choice to make a loop out of it. Harmor uses more sine waves for re synthesizing audio. You can time stretch audio so slow it stops, but maintains perfect spectral fidelity. Wish there was a hardware version of that.
