Quite a few of the Knife Snobs, Brand specific Fan Boys and the Tacti-cool EDC guys are bad-mouthing the hell on this knife. So far, all of those that I have seen bad-mouthing this knife haven't even got their hands on one. I said before, I got four of them (three are still sitting in a drawer), and I have been using the hell out of the same one for three weeks plus now. It is still going strong and I haven't had to sharpen it yet; it still can shave. For $10, it is a beast.

I hear “it’s ok for $10” I’ve said before that we don’t have to put a value on it because it’s $10. Day three with ours and my Spydercos are still in the drawer and saying there. Something about this knife just makes me feel good. Maybe after decades of paying so much it just feels good to get a complete win. I appreciate whatever it is so this knife is staying on me.

So, I bought this thing on your recommendation, and I love it. And since I enjoy the lock style, I went and ordered myself a vosteed raccoon since they're supposed to be really nice. Got the Raccoon in yesterday, and frankly it sucks compared to the OT knife. The lock is sticky, the pivot feels gritty and stiff, the detent doesn't keep it closed well, and the blade is less sharp out the box than my OT is after a week and a half of hard use. Walmart is really out there embarrassing knife companies with this move.
@knivesiguess4 ай бұрын
There's gonna be a lot of that floating around. The Nitro V on the Drop Bear isn't gonna hold an edge as long as this one did but the action feels nicer. My Raccoon is a prototype in 5cr so not relevant to this. This OT is gonna be a whole problem as long as it's on shelves.

I know two people who have purchased dropouts. The noise around the knife caused me to reach out and ask about their experiences. Both are noticing the same sort of thing that outpost76 is seeing - the pivot can’t hold up to regular use and the lockbar is taking damage / deforming to the point that lock failure is likely coming in the near future. They’ve only been using the knives for a short period of time and not abusing the knives. This is a perfect example of how some Chinese OEMs are dodgy. Lock bars should be hardened. They shouldn’t be getting chewed up from normal expected use. This is doubly disappointing as the heat treat on the blade seems to be reasonably well done. Save your money and get something in the 30-40 range from Ontario, qsp, sencut, ruike, honey badger, etc that won’t wear out in a few months.
@knivesiguess4 ай бұрын
I'm gonna keep an eye out for that. I know during my stream I put a LOT of pressure on those locks for extended periods.
@just99114 ай бұрын
@@knivesiguess I don’t think it’s the pressure so much as the locking surfaces taking damage when the knife is open and closed. The blade is hardened, the lock bar isn’t. When they are pressed against each other there will be some deformation, but not the same sort of stresses as when the two pieces are sliding against and clicking into each other.
@knivesiguess4 ай бұрын
Yeah, but I should at least be able to see SOMETHING. That second one spent 14 hours getting pushed through cardboard in total.
@just99114 ай бұрын
@@knivesiguess the fact that there seems to be such a wide variance in what people are reporting seems like a red flag in and of itself. If some people are getting hardened lock bars and some people aren’t, what the hell is going on at the factory? That’s the sort of thing that always worries me about the really cheap Chinese OEMs - even if the blades are reasonably consistent, they also need to get all of the hardware done right. I’ve seen some stuff where the liners around the lockbar channel start to deform, locking faces on frame/liner locks mush after a bit of use, and other dodgy work that affects the knife as a tool. For a little more, you can get a damn good value from one of the countless established Chinese makers.

Yeah, the QC issues show up every time OT does something like this. It's a good burner knife, it's a good starter knife, it's still better than it should be for $10. But MAN OT's QC is garbage.

from purely a quick research on d2s edge retention it should be close to elmax, ive never used elmax but have used d2 nothing that has held up that good tho. s90v should outperform elmax by a lot. s90v is personally my favourite steel for a knife. i work in dry environments and the worst thing i gotta cut are 2inch zipties but the cardboard is endles so edge retiention is my number 1 go to. that d2 tho got me thinking over here lol

I could see this knife being price adjusted up to $20 at some point, which is fine, what would be better is if between this and the street price on a Hogue Deka consistently being sub $120 we start seeing a correction of some of the brands charging silly money for having a butterfly on the handle when you can get this for 5% of the price. The USA made and nice steel premium isn't worth a 19x increase, especially when the factory QC is pretty hit and miss on whether you have to clean it up yourself when you get it.

@peterodriguez23644 ай бұрын
My guess.. again just my thoughts on it... being that it's over all a thinner blade than the larger black blade u showed could be a factor in it's longevity.. .. as u cut thru cardboard the thicker back end of the blade forces the cardboard to spread apart in an angle that puts more pressure towards the leading edge of th knife therefore causing it to dull n fatigue quicker.. if that makes any sense.. again just my 2 cents... I think Ozark Trail got the Magick Formula right with the overall dimensions , geometry and type of steel.. just my guess
@knivesiguess4 ай бұрын
Oh, that totally plays a part. What gets me is that we've done a bunch of different knives. The D2 has been pretty consistent regardless of grind or blade thickness. They might have just done a heat treatment that left a higher HRC than usual.

@knivesiguess4 ай бұрын
It doesn't tell us much any more. Most of the OEMs for companies selling really damn good blades are in China. Whoever OT's OEM is they haven't figured out how to handle QC in the most baffling way. Like the examples that came out properly are generally awesome for what they are. But then there are just wild ass amounts of QC fails that either got sent anyway or no one actually checked. Some guy in China's all like "I can't look at these knives right now, I was supposed to be in the shower with my dad 30 minutes ago".
@williamschisler48444 ай бұрын
They are junk after 1 week of mild use the blade will wobbly side to side even after tighten up the pivot, JUNK. Get you a ganzo f759m for your EDC and if you do lose it no big deal for $15 through the ozark in the trash before you get hurt
@jkirschy2 ай бұрын
Just my 2¢... I'm not going to disagree that Ganzo makes better quality and more polished knives than OT. However I don't know that calling OT knives junk is a fair characterization. I don't have this specific model, but I've a number of others. Some of them are good, like the green liner-lock I bought in 2017 or 2018. Some of them are kinda meh, more down to ergonomics, weight, difficultly removing pocket clips due to lock-tight, and QC issues like soft screws that strip out. None of them are as bad as what you're implying, and some of them (the green liner lock I mentioned) I've used as daily beaters opening coffee packets and breaking down cardboard for years at work, cutting up food packaging and paper at home, trimming weed-eater string... In general what I've observed is that OT knives are generally safe knives built with inexpensive materials that work reasonably well provided you're not abusing them.
