1. Why did the Korean boyfriend expect people of other cultures to follow his own? He’s in other people’s country now, and should respect the local culture. If he were to go to a western country, will he expect them to use chopsticks to eat with him too? When in Rome, do as the Romans do. Has he forgotten the Koreans borrowed the chopsticks culture from the Chinese? So who’s wrong now? Taiwanese people are too accommodating and also afraid to appear to be offending the guest. If he were to go to another country and expected the host to do the same, the locals would probably tell him “You’re in (country name), this is how we do it here.” 2. The Germans are an ironic bunch. On the one hand, they put so much importance in efficiency, speed and punctuality. On the other hand, they are still reluctant to fully embrace modern payment systems like contactless cards and mobile payments, and insisting on cash and card & pin. Cash payments takes time to calculate the amount received and the change balance. It also carry a risk of miscalculation by the staff who will have to pay back for any shortfalls at closing time. The staff also needs to send the cash to the bank, which is another risk. Card payments with PIN code takes time. Small amounts (below €50) should not need PIN code when paying by contactless card.

France too. If you go into the shop and need to ask for service , you need to say Bonjour to the staff, especially when in a bakery.
