He is a traditional master. Master Dong's his teacher was said to be a taoist monk how passed bagua skills on to him. Master Dong is the "Founder" of baguazhang

yeah they are the same. Bagua is the short name for Baguazhang. Whether they contain conditioning would depend on the school, but its nothing like taekwondo.

the yellow cape daoist and then the monks of the "lung men" had a hand in teaching and training him. ba gua zhang was a result of his own insights and the principals taught to him. or at least that is what i have read and have been told.

zhang sanfeng is said to be at the origin of internal martial arts.. and even if that was true, he did not invent taiji, xingyi and bagua and their respective techniques. he is said to have discovered the internal principles. not inventing forms.

No one really knows. I heard a theory about him being a bandit as a young man. he was persued by a number of authorities and took assylum with some Taoist monks. Already being a proficient martial artist, he incorporated the circle walking exercise/meditation with movements he knew. thus creating Baguazhang!

No, it's just that BaGua is used either as a term for the 8 Trigrams of the I Ching or as a colloquial term for BaGuaZhang. It's like saying 'don't' instead of 'do not'. And, BaGua is nothing like TaeKwonDo. You'll find many differences between Japanese/Korean and Chinese martial arts. Also, TaeKwonDo is external, whereas BaGuaZhang is internal. Hope that helped! :P

@wudanggongfu I heard he invented Bagua from taoist circle walking meditation and various kungfu techniques he'd learned in previous training. He must have had a strong root in taiji and chikung as well.

Ba Gua = 8 trigram Ba Gua Zhang = 8 trigram palm (correction from my first comment. It is "8 trigram", and not "8 diagram". The 8 trigrams, is a diagram) ;-) Tai Chi = Supreme Ultimate Tai Chi Chuan = Supreme Ultimate fist In Tai Chi, the word chuan(/fist) indicates that it is also a martial art. So if you train Tai Chi (without chuan), it is mainly for the health. Maybe it is the same for Ba Gua / Ba Gua Zhang...?

I would like to ask, coming from a Cheng style practitioner. I was taught by my sifu a posture that requires a lot of extreme rotations of the joints and a subtle sliding footwork to give a strong root and power to the body. I notice the walking is more upright and natural in Wudang. What is the principle for this? Is it to make the movements more accessible and quick?

Pues no hay que guiarse por lo que dice un sólo libro aldurak, lo cierto es que la evidencia apunta a que Dong Haichuan no fue el creador del estilo, sino como explicas la serie de linajes de Baguazhang que no provienen de él, y una serie de historias y estilos contemporáneos como YinYang Bapanzhang, o el estilo de Song Yiren - Gao Yisheng. Lo cierto es que no sabemos cuánta influencia tendrá el gobierno sobre Wudang (seguramente la tiene, igual a como ha metido las garras en Shaolin). Triste

There are many different styles of Bagua mainly differing on the different masters who have taught it. Originally it said that Master Dong learn Bagua from someone else plus circle walking was around long before Dong's Bagua. It's sad that there is only claims and no solid truth.
