In the original Journey to the West, Tang Sanzang and his first disciple Wukong seeked a place to rest and eat for the night. They came to a buddhist temple who welcomed them in. The master of the temple was an old man (the old guy) blessed with great age and treasured many valuable robes(kasayas). When Wukong convinced his master to show whata truly valuable kasaya was, the old man was overcome by greed. At night, after burrowing the kasaya, he was overcome by sadness, that this one kasaya would not be his. His younger disciples suggested burning the Tang Sanzang and Wukong in their sleep so that he will be the owner of the kasaya. Out of greed, he agreed. Wukong noticed all this and protected his master, but also set fire to the rest of the temple to punish the monks. The bear demon(friend of old man) saw the fire and came to save the old man, but was struck by greed when he saw the Kasaya. So he took it and left the old man to his fate. In the morning, with the kasaya missing and the temple destroyed, the old man felt guilt and regret for what he had done. Not only did his beloved kasaya get taken away, but his ploy to kill the travelling monks has failed. He says" I tried to kill them and take their treasure. What right do I have to face them" And so he killed himself by banging his head against a pillar in the temple before Tang Sanzang was able to see him. (The monk enemies use a headbutt as their attack in reference to this). Wukong would seek out the bear demon and had some trouble, so he asked Guanyin Pusa(the lady in the waterfall) the great buddha of mercy to help him "vanquish" the demon. Guanyin would take him in as a disciple and end this arc of the story. Wukong and his master would be able to continue on their journey.
