I got a brand new 64GB Steam Deck on the recent Steam Summer Sale and it also had this same kind of light bleed in the top left corner. After some looking around I came to the same conclusion as you, a little flex and screw loosening drastically reduces the severity of the light bleed. I thought of sending it back to Valve but I also heard that they have stopped accepting RMAs for light bleed except on very severe cases. They say light bleed like this is normal and unavoidable with this type of screen but if it's really bad to the point where it hurts the experience they'll fix it.
@drawfull Жыл бұрын
Not being a twat, but there were so many posts at launch with people in a dark room, with the deck on a black screen moaning about bleed. To be fair to valve - as you kinda said - they would replace if it was noticeable in gaming use, and it doesn't seem like that their policy has changed. I genuinely don't get this video's crits. Shrug.
@Artificial.Unintelligence Жыл бұрын
Light bleed on screens: Tons of handhelds (the bigger the screen the more prevalent) including the switch and tons of monitors have these 'hot spots' because of the way back lighting is done.. AND as bob eventually got to, pressure and twisting are a big issue; pinch your monitor slightly and it'll probably do the same and those don't need to be robust like a deck so it's less prevalent..
@Artificial.Unintelligence Жыл бұрын
@@drawfullI think people just aren't used to game screens in the pitch dark... Even high end non-oled monitors do this.. the switch does this.. people expect perfect BLACK from a screen that was never going to be capable of it and valve never claimed it to be. The controller buttons not working at bootup is most likely due to the drivers for the controller not bieng loaded at boot. It is a computer after all. Refurbished stuff in general is always a bit of a dice roll. Some refurbs are nothing more than returns that just needed a little cleaning...and sometimes not even that. But others did need repairs, whether to physical damage or faulty board components. Sometimes this works out and it's good as new. Sometimes the damage led to things that can't be easily seen or won't show up at all until later (voltage spikes damaged other components but didn't kill them, screen was loosened but not enough that it was apparent before it was shipped again, etc.). There's a reason you pay less here--you're taking a risk, however small.

I've had multiple handhelds, and especially laptops, over the years that had that light bleed effect on the screen. So that screen issue is a very common one for screens, even happens to a lot of reputable monitor brands. And as others have mentioned, it happens even on the switch. It's not something that can really be fixed with IPS screens. They could use an OLED, but this would have increased the price more than most people would have likely been willing to pay. Another part of it is that Valve is sourcing their screens from one company, and that is because that was the only company that had screens in the exact size and resolution Valve needed for the SD. The button issue is like a SteamOS bug. For as good of a choice it was in using Linux, there are some downsides at times and that is likely one of them.
@RichGwilliam Жыл бұрын
Having reinstalled my Deck relatively recently following a drive upgrade: the Steam OS installer is a bit of a glitchy mess. It took half an hour to carefully replace the drive, and then a day to reinstall. I suspect the glitches get fixed and created on the regular so you get a different experience each time you do it; and it'd be tempting to attribute that to the unit when it's just errors that are low prioritized because they're only experienced by a minority of users as compared to, say, library browsing problems.

Not too shocked about the hot spots from light bleed. The screens are basically the worst quality part on the whole system and a consistent complaint from day 1. And this isn't my Nintendo shill hat on - the lcd screens on Switch Lite and the OG switch are also bad, and some panels on the OLED models are tinted too green. Some though, are obviously fine. my Zelda OLED doesn't have the tinting issue, but that varies. The best thing to do is upgrade the screen - but as you noted that's the one part of replacing that is a really big pain in the arse. Having seen about 5 different steam decks in person so far from people I know, the light bleed thing is on some of them and not others. One screen had a weird screen door effect going on too, but I didn't see that on the other 4. Not surprising for the deck or switch. Both use literally the bottom of the barrel LCD panels and there is a very wide consistency issue with them between manufactures and even within the same factories. I hope Valve considers going with a higher quality panel on the next Steam Deck, or just jumps to OLED.

The case is likely refurbished too, as the newer cases I've been hearing don't come with the white strap to lift the deck out anymore as many people didn't know what it did without being told. Also, IIRC, you're supposed to put it in the case when RMA'ing a unit, so unless they received a damaged case it would probably be the one that came with that Deck originally. Most RMAs are going to be shortly after a person received a device, as that's when stuff is most likely to break from defects missed by QA, so that's why it looks new still.

I don't mind refurb electronics. It guarantees someone has looked at it and made sure it works, and if it doesn't it normally comes with a fairly generous exchange / refund period. That said, I got my 512GB Steam Deck back in August 2022.

Regarding the buttons not working initially. I have a theory that the rev B models doesnt have the correct drivers to function when Steam Deck OS is reinstalled on the SSD. I had the exact same issue with my Steam Deck with Type B joysticks when I swapped the 64GB eMMC to a 1TB SSD. First boot and the buttons and joystick did not work (this was a frightening experience after just installing an SSD). But after initial setup and an update later the buttons and joystick worked great and have ever since.

They go on sale for $360 new. $80 can get you a 1 TB SD card so, keep your 64 Gig internal, spend a bit less and not have the headaches of R&R the SSD. I got about 55 games on such a card and runs great, including for Cyberpunk 77
@googlacco Жыл бұрын
why would you use unreliable slow sd cards when you can buy a reliable and fast 1 tb nvme drive for the same amount
@weldsj8847 Жыл бұрын
@@googlacco You still have to R&R it without breaking your deck. One day I may get a 2 TB and dual boot it for the heck of it. For now, it does what I want it to do.

I got mine yesterday. Fan is a little noisier than my old Steam Deck, but other than that, it's perfect. I guess that a lot depends on the reason the original owner returned it: some issues will be more serious than others. I'm very happy with mine. 😊

When I did a fresh install of SteamOS when installing a bigger SSD, none of the buttons worked until you hook up to wifi and let it do its update stuff and get to the point where you log into Steam. From there, all the buttons work like normal

I bought a refurbished Steam Deck about a month ago, this was before Valve offered it so it was from Ebay and one annoying thing that I found, which I guess would apply to any second hand Steam Deck, is that if the previous owner redeemed the Steam Deck Rewards, you can't. Kind of annoying that they're tried to serial number and can only be redeemed once.

Mine had horrible light bleed from day one and was brand new. 64gb model. My neighbor bought the 256gb and screen was immaculate. I don’t think it’s a price point thing, more as a luck of the draw. It bothered me so much that, after being denied a return, I sold it and haven’t got another. The screen on my gcloud is much better- but that’s the only better part, I wish the steam deck had the gcloud screen. Then it would have been amazing 😊
@andrewalexander9508 Жыл бұрын
People might not have noticed, but on the refurb their is an unevenness with the top bezel, which makes me think the screen wasn't seated right. Even just ungluing and regluing the screen might resolve it. My guess is the bezel or the the alignment is off and pressing where it shouldn't from behind.

I had mine brand new about a year ago. And it had crazy light bleed on the screen. Its just not really noticable until the screen is full black. I say 'had' because it's now in RMA because the battery kept overheating.
@mia_amaryllis Жыл бұрын
I've been wanting to get one but the battery life is kinda what keeps me on the fence. I also don't really go out all that much so I got a Logitech Gcloud on sale from amazon and ended up being really surprised how good the streaming is!. Maybe when the steam deck 2 realease I'll llok into it!
@blisphul8084 Жыл бұрын
Depends on the games you play. Some light games with certain settings can get up to 9 hours of battery life. Some advanced emulated games like Zelda Wind Waker can fall under that category with some tinkering.
@sp3lllz Жыл бұрын
If twisting it fixes it that says to me it’s an issue with how the screens are stuck into the body maybe heating the screen adhesive up and twisting it a bit then letting it sit would permanently fix it

You can use an SD card for extra storage if you're worried about warranty issues right
@chronossage Жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure the light bleed and twisting issue is just from the fact manufacturing is not and cannot be perfect. That particular deck probably has some tiny manufacturing variance in the wrong directions to just flex the screen the wrong way. It could be in the screen, shell, or both. This is why small changes like the tightness of a screw or a flex can change so much.

Valve has fantastic customer service. On my original unit. I snapped the SD card in half in the reader. Then I messed up the reader trying to to get that remaining half out. I told Valve what I did and they were cool with it. I told em I didn't have a hard drive for it, since I lost the 64gb model. They were cool with it. Replaced my Deck with no issues.

Received mine a few days ago and issues with installing/updating the console when first starting it up. I reached out to Steam support and they helped me within the hour. I guess it's a bootloop issue but everything's been fine since.

I wouldnt have returned it because that to me seems pretty normal. Since every TV, monitor, laptop, and handheld device I have ever owned has had some sort of light bleed similar to what was shown. So for me that would seem pretty normal. Either way Valve seems to be pretty good on replacing/returning the steam deck at this point. Lets just hope people don't abuse the system so we can continue to get the great support they are offering. Also the buttons not working is probably because SteamOS needs to first fully be set up and the steam launcher needs to be running in order for it to recognize the button inputs. Kinda like when you switch over to desktop mode the inputs will briefly stop working until it loads Steam.
@samganji6987 Жыл бұрын
My regular one and only steam deck is like that. Has a bit of bleeding. I guess some just returned it haha. I didn't really care. One thing I one to point out, you called the shield a thermal shield. Which it could help with the thermals of the SSD sure but the real reson behind the shield is to protect the SSD from electro static noise. Because it is close to the CPU. Valve themselves have mentioned this and this is the reason they have printed "SSD is not meant to be user replaced" in their product page. In practice you should be fine changing the SSD to a shield less one, but your milage may vary.

I bought my new 64 gig Steam Deck a couple weeks before the refurbished launched and had all of the same issues on setup. None of the buttons worked at all until the update. Also, I have a pretty severe backlight gradient in both the top left and bottom right but have never really thought much about it. I'm wondering how many of these issues are related to the refurbished product or just the Deck in general. Either way, this thing opened up gaming for me again for the first time in 5+ years and I could not be happier. Its basically the only way I game now.

Yea, there is a screen-issue: What's with that massive bezel??... - I wouldn't get one unless that whole bezel was also filled out with pixels. - It might take a decade, but I'd get the next version, IF it indeed gets a larger screen. - If people complained about that with the Switch, why not with this?... And that with a lot PC-players who adopted one of these. - I don't get it. It's just not good enough if you ask me.

I bought a refurbished steam deck from GameStop and regret ever buying it. Didn't notice any issues at first but soon after playing, they showed up. First to fail was the left square trackpad button (Idk what it's called). Clicking started getting louder, until it completely stopped working. (I literally only played it a few times at that point). Started noticing dead pixel on the top left corner. The screen in general looked kind of washed out. (No clue why that happened) Also, don't forget about the wifi issue and not connecting to my 2.4ghz network! (5G works though) No warranty and can't get it fixed. I'm way past the return date for consoles at GameStop. I should have purchased an extended warranty, but I didn't. I'm hoping I can just sell it for parts and save for a brand new one. I would stay clear of buying these from GameStop if at all possible! It's not worth the headache. Might as well just flushed my money down the toilet.

I grabbed one as well. My touch screen didn't work in neither desktop nor game mode. There's a recommended troubleshooting step that I tried and it didn't help. Then one time I put it to sleep and it wouldn't wake up, so I had to hard reboot. I then tested putting it to sleep and waking it up about a dozen times. Then the touchscreen worked. What? I don't know. I hope it holds up.

The screen issue is probably whatever press method they do to attach the screen to case with that adhesive. That adhesive is creating pressure points on the screen just my opinion i could be nuts who knows.
