I think the reason people like the Watterson Family more than the Heffleys are because the Wattersons' worst traits are still so far in between compared to the Heffleys who are nothing but their worst traits almost 24/7 and we get to both actually understand why the Wattersons are who they are and each member do make small but noticeable changes to be better than they were before. I'm sure we all would prefer an Anais as a sibling than having a Manny. Plus, they all get called out for their behavior at times, either by each other or by members of the town.

imma be honest i completely disagree with you (TLDR if you don't want to read; The Wattersons aren't that bad in the context of their world and are much more loving compared to the Heffleys) Ik im going to sound like a nerd, but we have to think about the context of the world. Diary of a Wimpy Kid is set in a world slightly more chaotic than ours, but not by a lot. Tawog, on the other hand, is WAY more nonsensical and eposodic (everything resets by the next episode). With this in mind, the Wattersons are absolute angels compared to the Heffleys. Nicole is hard-working and stiff, but cares in the end. Richard is lazy, but he is a GREAT parent to his kids (his kids literally turned into goblins when he stopped parenting them). Gumball is, well, an asshole, but he has the brain of a typical teenage boy. Darwin does the same shit as Gumball, but has a much sweeter personality. Anais is smart, but probably doesn't realize how unhinged some of the things she does are. But most importantly, THEY ACTUALLY LOVE EACH OTHER!!! All in all a much better family then the Heffleys and is very disrespectful to even compare them to the Wattersons.
