San Shou was designed as the Red Army's combat art and took many of its influence from traditonal chinese grappling then Muay Thai, but when the Sport Version of San Shou was created they took the knees and elbows out and added more throws to make it more of like anti muay thai and kickboxing

You are correct about the leg kicks, and to add to that, in regards to the street, you would also be right about danger from groin kicks in regards to staying in the horse "stance" for a long period of time. I do horse stances all the time when I spar at a local MMA gym, but no person can really notice me doing them because it is really just a quick wide low lateral step with an arched strong back posture for wrestling but also maybe some body punches.

Excellent!! Like in every other activity, China wants to come up and be world class!! This is excellent but painful training...full commitment and dedication!! But, it is painful and damaging to the body! Like anywhere else, once you get disabled, you can no longer compete. However, this training may be in Shaolin but, you don't need to go to Shaolin to learn these punching and kicking combos. This is good old fashion western kickboxing with Chinese takedowns/throws included. Add some western groundwork or Japanese/Brazilian Jujitsu and it will make one a complete fighter!! I enjoy watching Thai, Cambodian, or Burmese kickfighting vs. Chinese Sanda matches. Great fights of speed vs. bodies trained to take pain.

You might want to open your mind to things. If you are interested in hip torqueing, moving quickly with a low center of gravity with a strong back, those stances could help. I think the things previously mentioned are important to fighting. Try shifting from horse and bow stances with you back strait and quadriceps parallel to the ground. It is just my opinion that those are calisthenics greatly help with a situation involving both striking and wrestling: more than many other exercises.

Just keep in mind, if you decide to practice those things that they are really not fighting "stances", they are really paused position of extreme motion that occur in combat as well sports like foot ball, basketball, baseball. For example, if you step forward as if just walking normally and paused you would be in a bow "stance" in some sense. If you took a giant long lunging step and pause, you would be in a bow "stance" in the shaolin sense.

(cont from below) Just to be clear, it is impractical to spend 3 x 3 minute rounds of fighting against an opponent in super low horse and bow stances because your legs will get to tired. But its very practical to practice the classical stances as calisthenics to improve torqueing hips a little more, stepping a few more inches with a slightly lower center of gravity. when I fight, I don't conscientiously think about doing a kung fu stance, but I do need leg endurance, flexibility & lower gravity

Watch some Rampage Jackson, Vetor Belfort, Mike Tyson, Chuck Liddell highlights and pause the tapes from second to second. You will see those fighters in postions with their knees greatly bent, their backs strait and hips turned much more than many other fighters. Those fighters had a superior ability to move in and out of horse and bow stance amongst the general population of MMA fighters.

The modern Sanda's the resurrection of Chinese martial arts after devastating repression during the Mao era. It's becoming deadlier every few years after the nation wide tournament system. Sanda fighter killed someone recently with a single spinning back kick to the chest in a fight outside the ring. Another military police killed a guy inside the ring with a head strike. Sanda fighter KO a Japanese Muaythai fighter with a hand strike to the chest this year. The only way to improve is to compete

hey, i agree with you, but only 50%, it depends on the user wether its useful or not, shaolin monks, they live just to look like that "silly" way of extending arms and what not, with all their physical abilities enhanced like crazy from 24/7 insane training which is easy for them, so.. dont mess with them i say, they are the type who think before they act, and analyze everything like crazy.

I understand what you just stated, but remember kung fu these days most if not just practice forms all dy long, hours and hours and they rarely if not never spar ay all . Im ok with practicing forms in addition with sparring training after words ,to apply the forms that I learnt in my fighting , not just practicing things and never appliyng it to know whether it works for real or not. Forms are great but without sparring its quite useless, but not completely at least.

do you really even know how to practice a horse, bow and cat stance statically and move from stance to stance properly? Do you even understand the function of those things towards fighting and also who taught you how to do those forms? I really think you just let the TV set tell what to think. And yes I know the "World Champion" teaches at your gym. Every single fighting gym seems to have the "World Champion" teaching there.
@lucainternational5417 жыл бұрын
This is a typical example that martial art is NOT a sport. The movie reports the reality: fights-massacres, wounded people, taken off in the stretcher, maybe dead. The absolute indifference to the human life of these Asian nations, from the poor moral and sport ethics. Of the athlete's blindness, (which are men not beasts to be slaughtered) there is little, very little interest. Federations pretend nothing, maybe, I say maybe they are also accomplices of this system. The important thing is that money runs through rivers.

Just regular training. If you don't do that you can't call you a fighter. But that's not student of shaolin wushu, it's just student on martial art school that learn Sanda. This training can't stand the comparison of the true shaolin wushu training in the shaolin temple in term of difficulties or toughteness.
@Darkangle25uk11 жыл бұрын
Actually, I understand where you're coming from, but your statement isn't true and is a typical western view.I 've been doing San Da/Shou for 16 years now and do Shaolin, GJJ and traditional Jujitsu. Form is there to correct posture and understand how to generate Fajing etc., where force-training increases power (li),where as sparring is a clinical environment for you to practice techniques for a real fight. So! I disagree that forms are silly and useless they have worked for my technique.
