Astro bot was a surprise but both Balatro and BMW did deserve it. BMW had most of Chinese gamers behind it and Balatro was good enough to be nominated for GOTY and I've heard nothing but praise from those who played in (it has a rating of 4.9/5 and this was made by a solo dev btw). People have their own gaming bubbles so you shouldn't be surprised seeing random games be popular. That being said the judges do have a 90% say.

My question is that did the judges even try any of the gacha games nominated? I think they just saw them and think, "Meh, just another boring gacha anime cringe game probably". My guess is people think it's too dangerous to start playing and to get addicted to gambling. also i find it good that wuwa and girls frontline 2 are available in belgium, cause they look more regulated and you clearly see influence by the shop packs and costumes costing euros instead of a virtual coin you buy with real money.

Balatro is more than poker, there's a rogue like guimick that people like to overpraise. It's not a bad game, but it's no way near a gacha game where just some musics are immortalized. Balatro is more a pass time than a game per si. It's like tetris where you need to keep raising a score. The problem is that the repetion is addictive and simple so it becomes a fever. It's a similar effect to Candy Crush when it was all time high.

It did actually deserve it. Yeah it was a different kind of game but it was the more polished and appealing product for most people outside of the gacha sphere, which is a significant portion of people. But even if it was Gacha, Pokémon was also more appealing than WuWa or ZZZ. None of my friends care about WuWa or ZZZ, but they will happily enjoy Pokémon and Balatro, my parents will play Balatro, arguing ZZZ or WuWa should have won is just being weeb pilled. That said Astrobot sweep was kinda a robbery. Especially for direction.

I feel like a lot of people hating on Astro Bot winning have never actual gone hands on with the game. It’s really good! It’s has that Mario World charm with a simple but well directed concept. It’s just a fun game with unique ways to experience the worlds and levels. It’s very fresh and I think that’s why it won. Black myth, Re:fantazio are great but a lot of what they do are iterative of other games in the genre(soulslikes or Persona 5) or other adjacents. It’s not a bad thing it’s just Astro Bot comparatively stands out when you look at a GOTY nominee list like that one. Again, no shade to BMWK or ReF because they are both great! I was shocked Astro won as well but like every game nominated(except Elden ring dlc which I loved but didn’t think it should be there) I’m happy to see one of them win

You are correct, I haven’t played quaking and have only seen gameplay. It looks like a great game and I like the combat. What I am saying though is that astronaut is different. I have seen the journey to the west story so many times(dragon ball, enslaved) that it’s been tried and done. Astro bot is both unique and simple and fun and I think a lot of people who have gone hands on like yourself could probably appreciate. Again,I don’t want this to sound like I don’t like wukong or any other nominee(I played and beat FFVIII rebirth) I’m just giving an opinion as to why I think Astro bot probably won

Yeah, one of the few years a nominee is put up and wins that was clearly the best game of the lot (same for Elden Ring when it released)...this year the ONLY justifiable reason I can give for Astrobot winning is FFVIIR, Metaphor, and Wukong's players mostly came from the same playerbase and split the votes enought o let Astrobot win...ER dlc probably also split into that vote too and then throw in when it comes to journos they always choose the easiest games as they don't want to spend enough time to seriously play and review a game (or find it too hard so they can't beat it) or if it checks enough agenda boxes (no nominees this time did that from what I saw but as for easy Astrobot was there). I might also say they may give it some additional points because it's a game that can appeal to a wider audience than the other 3 (addition of kid audience which i guess may be a justifiable enough reason to give it some extra points...it's at least better than say it pushes specific politics anyway) and it being a Mario clone more or less means it's at least should be fun if nothing else (more or less the most important thing a game should do)...even I still enjoy Mario/Zelda games at 34 years old. Hell tbh outside of the dlc being given anything but a 'best dlc award' this years nominees for 90% of the game awards (don't care about the esport/actors awards) were solid outside of the one or two times Star Wars Outlaws and DA Veilguard were nominated for something (shouldn't have been nominated for anything...especially the former with how many bugs it had from what I heard (didn't buy either and never will but head the bugs in SW were bad and the few clips of DA I saw showed the writers suck at dialogue writing nowadays...thank god they were so bad not even the journos could justify nominating either as GotY or another good category like rpg/action game/etc as I could see them picking it if it was just for the agenda reason)).

Hey, even though I don't like to say it, because nobody should say it or question it, Astrobot is a game that compiles the entire legacy of one of the most legendary video game development studios in the history. A studio that if it weren't for them there wouldn't even be Elden Ring games. They are people who know how to make games and objectively that's what they did, a game that can be played and that is also entertaining without the need for complicated plots, agendas, or any of the things you see now that many people missed from older games. It's a game made with love for its players and that's exactly why it won.

I saw a lot of people in social media commenting that Astro Bot deserved GOTY and if you disagree, it's because you haven't played it yet. But you don't have to try out something, to have an opinion of it. Furthermore, Astro Bot is PS5 exclusive. Which means not everyone can play it. Not every person in this world have the kind of money to buy a PS5 like it's nothing. By becoming GOTY, Astro Bot will get more spotlight and encourage more people to try it out. But what happens when a lot of people don't have a PS5? Like in my country, it is still very rare to find people who owns a PS5 because of how expensive it is. A lot of people in my country still use PS4. How are they supposed to know if Astro Bot is better than Wukong? How are they supposed to know if Astro Bot is that amazing? Well as for the Player's choice I'm happy with the choice as, imo, Wukong was the best game on that list and the 3 gacha games shouldn't have been there to begin with as 1st. there's tons of other games that released this year (some nominated (Metaphor, FFVIIR, etc), some not (like say The Legend of Heroes Trails through Daybreak or Ys 10 which both are tied for my goty right now (not done Ys 10 but so far it's as good as Daybreak imo)) and 2nd. the only reason they were likely nominated was because the players thought they could get free pulls if they won, not because they actually thought it was the best game of the year. The likely only reason none of those 3 won was probably more so because the 3 of them ate into each other's player base enough to allow Wukong's votes to edge out over the 3 if them...if it was just 1 of those 3 on the list than I'd bet that one would've won. And as for the ER dlc it also shouldn't be there due to being dlc that requires the base game to play and understand the context of what goes on in the dlc...if it was a completely standalone dlc that could be bought without the base game and played and you don't really need the base game to understand the story and are at least 20+ hours long/about a third of the base game's size but not large enough to be considered a full on sequel then maybe I could understand that being there (like say the Xenoblade 2 and 3 dlcs....let me note after story dlcs probably not as they more or less occur right after the game thus need some knowledge of what happened beforehand and they're still dlc and not full on games (full on sequels can apply of course as they're intended to be full on games that follow up on the first game with another 40+ hour or so game/roughly game as long as the first). As for the mobile game of the year award...I've no real problem with Balatro winning as the category is MOBILE game and the game released on mobile...the category is NOT best gacha so it shouldn't be assumed gacha will always win and when it comes to Balatro there's the simple fact that Poker is a far larger game that appeals to a far larger and more casual audience than any gacha game or probably even any other large scale video game like shooters such as CoD or maybe even Pokemon as it brings in people besides the usual fps/rpg/action adventure/etc video game crowd. Tbh I'm surprised that none of the many Candy Crush clones have won this category over the years due to the same reason. Astro Bot winning GotY isn't too surprising either as it's a well known fact these awards are mostly chosen by journalists and if you give them either a BS easy game as an option (as half of them are bad at games/too lazy to complete games that need a lot of time investment and half ass their articles and rush games for said articles) or one that pushes specific political agendas they'll go with those ones...the only time you may get something different (like BG3 last year) is if everything else is so clearly sub par to it they can't justify awarding it to another game or there's too much buzz on the game they know they can't not give it to them...this year in comparison we got at least 3 killer game nominees (Wukong, VIIR Rebirth, and Metaphor) that likely cut into each others votes on top of dlc (shouldn't have been there) and Poker...throw in Astrobot is kid friendly too so they use that as a justification for the vote as it can target a larger audience as well which is a somewhat justifiable reason to give additional points to a game. If there's anything I'm disappointed about (besides my choices of GotY not getting nominated for anything) it'd be that Unicorn Overlord lost the Strategy award (imo the best there) and wasn't nominated for best art style/direction either as imo Unicorn Overlord and Metaphor had the best art direction of all games released this year (granted Vanillaware always does well with that), my vote would've went to UO though over Metaphor...went to Metaphor for the nominees given though.

nah, it's not a perfect game not memorable enough, like most of this years chosen. none felt like clear winners. last year baldurs gate hell yes ofc thats going to win it's literally made for everyone cause there is a clear difficulty setting, great and memorable characters, great story (almost as cool as witcher 3),... wukong is a boss rush and has locales i could find by going outside into a forest, wait till snowfall,... also it didn't deliver it's story and lore easily enough for me a person who has never read journey of the west to understand, it feels like i was supposed to get a vaatividja included with my disk but it didn't... so i was confused🤣, why is there a weird dullahan looking guy singing and playing music for me...😅

as a HUGE Wuthering Waves fan and active daily player since day 1, i genuinely was hoping for Astro Bot to win game of the year and i was SOOOO SHOCKED AND THRILLED to see it actually win the best award!!! Astro Bot brought back what Sony had originally been known for and improved it for modern consoles to satisfy not only the younger audience, but also to those who have grown up to love this genre over the course of 30years. it makes me happy to know that simple minded platformers can STILL be fun and relevant by all ages if the devs are willing to listen to their player base!!!

I voted for WuWa, but I'm not salty that balatro won, I saw someone playing it and it's kinda fun even if it's simple, so I can understand the charm. Never really understood why people have such a weird bias against gacha games (especially the people that don’t actually play any). If you put aside the “gacha” aspect of it, you have a free game with hundreds of hours of content and constant updates. Just because it’s a gacha doesn’t make it any less of a game compared to any other out there. In fact, I would argue that many gacha games have better quality overall (story, gameplay, characters, world-building, music, etc…) compared to a lot of paid games of today.

Its was a “GOTY” nominee - why would you ever think it would lose against any other game in its platform category when none of them had that level of renown How could it lose being the Best MG when amongst the Mobile games, only one is nominated for GOTY (“It’s one of the 6 best games of the ye….” But it isn’t even the best game of its respective platform? It wouldn’t make sense. That would make the winner the better nominee for GOTY. Balatro victory in the Mobile department was sure thing)
