My Grandfather won the DCM at the 1st Battle of Ypes L/CoH Norman Watt 2nd Life Guards 6 Nov' 1914. Leading a baonet charge at Kliene Zilibeke and recovering the body of his C.O. Maj. The honouable Hugh Dawney who had all the order of battle marked on his map an intelligence gold mine had Gerry got it. Decorated in the Field at Loose by the King and Prince of Wales. .

Thoughts of the trench line reaching the sea and seawater flows in all the way down the trench line to Switzerland. The trenches had to have stopped before the beach with extra due diligence at low tide to prevent getting outflanked. Just never heard of any accounts of what this position near the coast looked like.

The frontline ended at Nieuwpoort. The Yser flows into the sea over there, so the opposing forces were separated from each other by that river. You may find some pictures if you Google "Nieuwpoort Bad, WO1"

First flooding trough to Swiss is not possible. They flooded the plains through the ganzenpoot in Nieuwpoort. Nieuwpoort is a small harbour. So uuse the water

Although the depth charge was invented in 1915, it not successful until mid-1916 so bringing in battleships to bombard the shoreline would make them vulnerable to subs.

What if the Washington Naval Treaty never happened? Would it result in more massive traditional naval battles? Would there be less emphasis and development on carriers as a result? Would it change the course of WW2 in any meaningful way?

What if the Crown Prince was able to keep the French armies along the Frontier by conducting feigned retreats and rearguard actions? There would be no "Miracle on the Marne" because no additional French troops would be available, and it would be Sedan 1870 all over again.

What would have happened with Austro-Hungary? Would there have been an organic Pan-German drive? In effect an advance Anshluss?

Austro-hungary was a multi-national state with ethnic germans/austrians as a minority. In a time of extreme nationalism it was doomed to desintegrate, WW1 just accerelated the process. The german speaking parts may be absorbed by Germany , the larger non-german parts may become under russian influence.

My father was an MOD engineer working in India in 1947 and was asked to stay on by the Indian government to help them take over the munitions factory he was running, which he did as I was born there in the 1950s. What I am saying with this is that Britain left India with the infrastructure and education to continue to manage their country after partition. Commonwealth countries given home rule by the British were left with the ware with all to be independent - later problems are down to the corruption of the subsequent rulers who took over.

It's interesting to think what might have happened had the Germans lost Tannenberg? Russians driving into East Prussia and Galicia, you just lost on the Marne, etc. The Central Powers may of called a quits, and Europe might of been spared the major bloodletting otl.

my grandad spent his 15th birthday under fire at ypres. he was the youngest in his class at school when they were visited by someone from the war office and encouraged to lie about their age and sign up (as part of the pals brigades?). when he came back he was the only one from his village to come home and one of only 2 from his class.

Let's not forget WW1 ended most of the European monarchies. Things would've ended up a lot differently. Would there still have been the a conflict between socialists and communists? Maybe a communist revolution happens in Britain as well as Russia? Or even a nationalist take over of the United States. A lot of "what ifs" if WW1 never happened.

The USA is going to become the largest economy regardless of WWI but Germany would challenge strongly and Russia could become a true player with England falling to 4th in decline. And England would have to chose to be in the orbit of USA and Germany. The USA would see the need to England in their orbit rather than Germany.

As for an Armistice, I still think you are missing the struggle by Labour across Europe. Pre-1914 you had high industrial unrest and for Britain there was impending Civil War in Ireland. A Stalemate would not do anyone any favours and a lot of highly militarised workers returning from the war. There is likely to be an outcry of betrayal by the extremes of various political parties. We have to ask what would have happened to German colonies, if Britain was fighting on. German SW Africa capitulated in early 1915 and all of the German Pacific colonies had been captured by Australia, New Zealand and Japan by 1914. Not sure that Austria-Hungarian could survive and this is a state likely to collapse with Austria joining the German Empire. The Balkans stay as they are. As it was likely that German would occupy Belgium, the Netherland might be a German target to join up the North Sea coast.

Thinking about chaos theory, the way the world would look now is inconceivable. We could all be dead following a nuclear war, or living in a golden age because we didn't spend a fortune on the great war part 1 and 2, Korea, Vietnam or the wars in the middle East. Would the USA have become the power they now are? Would the Ottoman empire have had a resurgence? Would the Europeans still have their colonies? Without the full horrors of the great war, medicine would not be as advanced, particularly plastic surgery and prosthetics. Tanks would likely have only been a thought until the next big war. The American flu may not have made its way around the world, so considering the brain drain that would have resulted from the two events who knows how science and engineering would have progressed, or even where it would have progressed. Without the antisemitism from Hitler would Germany have kept it's scientists? Would Einstein have pushed Roosevelt to start the Manhattan project? Would the B.E. or Germany be the first nuclear country? Would we have computers that were developed from code breaking? Would the Germans be the first to the moon? When you look at the bombing campaigns of WW2, could there have been an arms race from the end of what was Ypres, until the British Empire develops the bomb and then they start a war against Germany with a raid destroying all major cities in a single night? Or would the USA have tried it's luck and invaded Canada, only to have the British navy deliver nukes into all of its coastal cities? Of course there is the possibility that the Japanese developed the bomb, but as they weren't snubbed in the peace process would they have gone on their empire building campaign? Or would they have nuked Hawaii? How would social mobility look, would a large proportion of people still be in service? Would women have gotten into the workplace like they did or would they be stay at home mum's? At this point it's a big guess...
