Interesting note in history. In this footage on several occasions you see the Hellfighter's band lead by James Reese Europe. This band is responsible for introducing Europe to African American Ragtime Jazz which became incredibly popular in Europe after the war.

I am a WWI historian and it is true that the Americans who served the longest in ground warfare in WWI were the Harem Hellfighters 191 combat days (only volunteer American pilots served longer combat time), because they were fighting for the French before General Pershing took over the Argonne sector of the line. What gets me about all original footage is how they always get the chronology wrong. When the HH left the US they were carrying M1917 rifles and M17 helmets, they arrived in France with them. When they were given to the French they were reequipped with French helmets and French 3 shot Berthier rifles for logistic reasons. Then in their last battle the Argonne-Muse offensive in September 1918 they were reequipped with M17 US helmets only but fought with the Berthier rifles. Only after Nov 11 1918 were they reequipped with M1917 rifles for the trip home. So all this footage of HH soldiers with M1917 rifles was before or after their combat in France. In over 30 offensive engagements they only ever failed to take their objective once due to lack of coordination with the artillary. Nine Hellfighters received France's highest military award (Croix de guerre). I am trying to get Mel Gibson to make a movie about the Hellfighters, they deserve the honor even late in coming.

I salute, respect and have great admiration for these African American soldiers who fought for a country that literally hated and socially excluded them, also showed no appreciation for their service. I dont know if I could have served in the us military at that time given how blacks were treated in the army during that period and how African Americans were treated in general.

I teared up watching this video. I grandfather served in WWII as a black enlisted aRmy regular soldier. He really only talked about the "nider" times in Europe, never the hardship.
