You know accuracy wise I'm surprised that the Russians weren't shooting the ones retreating, they should make a patch for that, or add some penal battalions for both sides

Order .227 is a myth. Please do us all a favor and read an actual history book instead of watching Enemy At The Gates.

@@unclelarry8842 You know there actually was many Russian, Cossack and Karelian Soldiers were killed for "Mutiny" (basically running away) as for the whole ordeal of order 227 it was mostly something to scare soldiers from becoming penal soldiers as they were quite infamous in the soviet army. Other than that I've never actually watched enemy at the gates, although I have planned to And also a note that the soviet soldiers didn't properly have a chance to run away at Stalingrad, soldiers that ran were hunted down by guards infantry to then be put into penal battalions in the central front and the northern parts of the southern front.

@@unclelarry8842 Order No. 227 (Russian: Приказ № 227, romanized: Prikaz No. 227) was an order issued on 28 July 1942 by Joseph Stalin, who was acting as the People's Commissar of Defence. It is known for its line "Not a step back!" (Ни шагу назад!, Ni shagu nazad!),[1] which became the primary slogan of the Soviet press in summer 1942.[2] The order established that each front must create one to three penal battalions (Shtrafbats), which were sent to the most dangerous sections of the front lines.[3] From 1942 to 1945, a total of 422,700 Red Army personnel were sentenced to penal battalions as a result of courts-martial.[4] The order also directed that each army must create "blocking detachments" at the rear that would shoot "panic-mongers and cowards" Damn, look at that, it's real. Sorry you're uneducated.

@@Operator_Stal Order .227 was mostly aimed at officers, the order was made after unauthorized retreats started to become a growing problem during the war. The order was to punish any superior officers that would allow retreats not authorized by army command. Yes it was true that they had blockades but they didn't fire at retreating soldiers, instead most were sent back to the frontlines while only a tiny portion was executed, imprisoned, or sent to a Penal Battalion.

@@brandondavis7777 look you fucking donut I know that it's real. What I mean is how people misunderstand or overexaggerate it (Enemy At The Gates is a wonderful example of this). Order .227 was mainly targeted at superior officers after unauthorized retreats started to become a growing problem. So as a result Order .227 was enacted, effectively punishing any and all officers who would allow unauthorized retreats without permission from Front command. Blockades (or atleast the ones I've heard of) never fired at retreating soldiers instead, most were sent back to their fronts while some were taken to be executed, imprisoned, or sent to a Penal Battalion.
