What a great tank. Excellent footage and thank you for posting. I believe the turret was also fitted to other vehicles, such as the Buffalo amphibious vehicle and also boats.

The 75 mm Howitzer Motor Carriage M8 was a self-propelled howitzer vehicle that was developed on the chassis of the M5 Stuart tank and was equiped with a M116 howitzer in an M7 mount. The M8 was used to give infantry close support against enemy fortified positions. It proofed to be really effective in hilly terrain, because of it's high elevation of the howitzer it could hit enemy positions that were set up on high positions. The M8 was produced from 1942 until 1944 and approximately 1,778 were made and it would stay in service until 1960.

As usual a great footage! The 75 mm Howitzer Motor Carriage M8 was generally assigned to the Assault Gun Troops of Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadrons in order to give them close support against enemy fortified positions with it's high elevation (40 degrees) of the howitzer was useful for hitting enemies emplaced on the sides of hills that was a very useful in Italy due to the narrow roads and high hills and therefore was popular among the crews because of it's reliability and good off road capability. My late father saw them in action going down to Pisa near his town but it was rather pointless because the Germans was already retreating. Personally I like very much the M8 with it's 75mm howitzer with it's relatively small size it could go almost everywhere! Good job again 👍👍

@@PanzerInsight out of curiosity my father saw the enormous convoy of M8 (that he never saw in action) and M4 (that he saw one hit by a 75mm Pak) was racing to Pisa trough his town followed by interminable numbers of trucks and troops coming from Siena. He said that it took about a full day and a half to cross the town. He and everyone was shocked to this massive display of vehicles but to their astonishment to US troops was already dancing with the pretty girls Boogie-woogie and my father already joined the party, lol...

I was looking for my Dad, he and 4 of his friends from home went through the war each commanding one of these. He talked about it very often and loved the gun. When they were in the battle of the bulge they were offered a tank with a longer barrel and none of them wanted one.

Question: Was the shroud around the barrel there to protect the driver and bow gunner? Thats all I can conclude. I like this little guy. I had always thought it was a recon vehicle with some bite. But know I see it was attached to infantry for close assault duty. I also learned it was an open-top turret! Also, I never knew about the crews assembling the shells on the spot. Is that particular to this one vehicle? Because its a howitzer? Thanx so much for putting this on for us. Much appreciated.
@PanzerInsight3 жыл бұрын
The shroud was to protect the barrel from dirt, and the shell unpacking and assembling the shells seems to be a Allied thing.

The Ordnance department named it General Scott, after American general Winfield Scott. But like other names this one probably did not stick that well after the war.
