There are other WW2 weapons still in use in by the Italian military as cerimonial weapons are: The M1 Garand, that is in use by the Italian Navy's San Marco Marines honor guard and by the Army's officer and marshall (NCO) cadets academies. The Beretta 38 in the 38/57 model is still in use by the Navy's marshall cadets. The Lee Enfield No.1 is in use in the Navy by both officer cadets and sailors on honor duties. Then you would finally see - contrary to all the ideas on the Internet - that today's German army still maintains many traditions from the past. Goose step and breeches no longer exist, but these are just two of many aspects. The guard battalion, for example, is still based on the Prussian drill regulations. Incidentally, this stipulated that only heavy infantry could use Goose step. But they don't exist there. In this respect they are actually close to tradition.

In Germany it seems their drill is traditional while the British Army changed its rifle drill when the SA 80 was adopted. I think it is somewhat bizarre that British soldiers in red tunics and bearskins do not parade with a traditional shaped rifle as just about all other armies do. Retaining some Lee Enfield or even SLR rifles might not be such a bad idea for certain prestige guards of honour.

I was in the US Army in the early 1980s and was stationed in Italy. I worked with the Italian Air Force on a daily basis. Their security guards were equipped with Baretta Model 38 sub machine guns. I think they were being replaced around 1985. More interesting to me were the Breda_SAFAT machine guns that were also in use. I think that they were modified aircraft guns because they had both right and left feed versions of the weapons. I am sure that they have all been replaced now also.

Similar M1938/49 can also be seen in the hands of sailors during cerimonial duties. for example here a cadets' Oath ceremony in 2017 ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/bpyUl6aei5aHnac ) Yes, as the "49" suggests these are in many cases a postwar version but it's the exact same case for the MG42/59 except the fact that the M1938/49 are still chambered for the same caliber as the M1938s used in WW2, and are almost identical to the simplified models of late war period.

Sometimes, the old stuff just does it too well to justify a replacement, despite the supposed march of technology. I am reminded of all the attempts to replace M2 Brownings. They always tried to make a lighter .50cal, but no one could really offer any newer design that was as durable, cheap, simple to maintain and repair, and could shoot better enough. The biggest stumbling block came with the realization that there was really no point to having a .50cal machinegun that weighed only 40 pounds as opposed to 84 pounds when everyone wanted .50cals specifically for vehicle mounts where that ~40 pounds difference didn't matter to the users.

I wish the Guards regiments still used Lee Enfields for ceremonial purposes myself but I understand the reason why they don't. They're not strictly ceremonial troops but fully deployable combat-ready units and as such have the most up-to-date weaponry on hand. So I imagine their thinking is it doesn't make sense to have two sets of weapons, ones for "show" and ones for "go." Hey, it's their choice to make, not ours.

Basically Mr. Antoniazzi hits it on the head: despite the formalities and the ceremonial-looking uniforms, the soldiers of the Palace are active-duty soldiers assigned to defend the Monarch's person and residence with full military force. They can, if they really think it necessary, order artillery and airstrikes; that is how serious their military role is. Also, despite the look, the uniforms are actually reasonably practical military equipment based on former field uniforms of the past, so the Buckingham Guards can very quickly go from stiff sentries to active infantry. There is a unit of of the guard on site that is also not wearing the red and black hats, but have their modern field uniforms, who can immediately sortie to reinforce their red-uniformed comrades. However, it is notable that with the adoption of the L85 weapon system, a lot of Palace Guards really struggled to comfortably handle the ceremonial drill and sentry duties due to the guns being so short, so there was a bit of an argument about letting them keep L1A1 rifles specifically for palace duties. As you can see, the argument that the soldiers were there to fight for the Monarch, not be comfortable, won out.

It's kind of hard to judge if the M3 is still considered to be in service with the JGSDF because since the 90s it has been gradually replaced with the type 89 with a folding stock and the M9 9mm sub machine gun. The most concrete info I can find in Japanese is that it was officially removed from service as of 2011 but post early 2000s and pre 2010 it was used by a select few individuals and before that it was used by tank crews as said in the video. However the JGSDF claims they have retired all M3 but retain them in an odd "back up" weapon where it's not completely gone but it's also not in service. You can find images of people firing the M3 but no one has been issued it in recent memory it seems. However it's worth noting that the JGSDF dosen't make it easy to find answers to obscure equipment.

It is interesting just how many weapons designed prior to or during WW-2 that are still in service. From 1986 to 1992 when I served in two different Tank Companies in the Kansas Army National Guard I carried in an M-7 Shoulder Holster (another carry over from late WW-2 having replaced or supplemented the M-3,) two different M-1911A1s the first one built by Remington Rand and totally shot out and well beyond its use by date and the other a 1941 built Ithaca that was just as good in 1988 through 1992 as it was in 1941 and the M-3A1 the late war and Korean War improvement to the M-3 Submachine Gun. I was at one point or another either the Driver or the Loader on either the Platoon Leader or Platoon Sergeant's tank during my time in the 635th Armor of the 69th Infantry Brigade of the 35th Infantry Division. Sadly by the mid 1990s the M-3s were replaced by M-4 Carbines and the M-1911A1s by M-9s.

John Moses Browning sure left a mark. I don't presume to educate His Lordship, Dr. Felton, only his readers who may not have done military service. The Browning M2, heavy mg is also called "the pig" and "Ma Duece". The pig refers to its weight. Ma Duece is just the military designation spoken out loud with a reference to 'mother duece' keeping you safe. Disclaimer: Hardly any American mothers carry machine guns, anymore.

Thank you Mark. The MG42 is a modern weaponry marvel to this day. 1200 rpm is nothing to sneeze on in conjunction with simplicity of operation and weight. Although, one would think, the latest developments in metallurgy could have yielded a much more robust barrel, not requiring as frequent or no replacement at all. But again, the heat of 1200 rpm is tough to overcome.

Shows just how well made the Browning and MG-42 are. The fact they're still relevant this far into the future really goes to show that these 2 guns in particular were way ahead of their time. The STG-44 was as well since the Soviets basically just stole the design to create the AK-47 which is a cheaper version of the STG-44. The M1911 pistol from America is also still widely used, not anymore in the US military as it has been replaced but only for a small amount of time. Something about American and German arms manufacturers always seems to create extremely well made weapons that last the test of time.

The weight, balance, and look of a Kar98 is just about perfect for a drill rifle, however the Germans really don't care to be reminded of under who's auspices they were produced.
