Your tank is stunningly gorgeous! I’ve learnt a lot from your channel! So illuminating and inspiring! Is ultraviolet light a must for the sps corals?
@TheBioReef2 жыл бұрын
It stimulates the production of green fluorescent proteins. Not sure if it is truly essentially but certainly helps with colors i think

Great tank, such lovely SPS! What media/ chemical do you use , or recommend to lower Nitrates? I need to drop them, after dosing the to help counter Dinoflagalletes, after hiting zero! Thanks, always learn from you 🙂
@TheBioReef2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! No media (other than a tiny bag of carbon in the sump that I rarely change). I do about a ml of aminos on M W F. I like my nitrates around 2 to 5 ppm. Never had the need to lower them. Actually it’s the opposite in my tank. I run a fuge with Chaeto

Hey, I just watched your Trident setup video. Are you still using it? Have you been able to dial it in to be close to your salinity tests for cal a s mag? And Hanna for alk? I am setting mine up and I can use some tips, please.
@TheBioReef2 жыл бұрын
Yep! I wouldn’t worry too much about have it match the old test kits. There will always be slight variation between them because of the different reagents involved. So I just used the info from the trident as the bench mark and I tried to make the chosen level consistent

Sorry about your tank. I've been trying to find a link to the WWC spectrum and photoperiod details, but no luck. Do you have a link to it?
@TheBioReef Жыл бұрын
Link was in a brs video, which I don’t have a link for handy. But essentially, program your lights for ab+ and then divide thr 18.5k plateau in half and remove all non blue /uv channels out
@strike2867 Жыл бұрын
@@TheBioReef thank you. I found their programs on their site, but don't have a radion so can't see the actual settings. I've also called them. I've ended up just shortening my white photoperiod. Playing around with it, so far an uptake in calcium. Corals still growing.
@patsorsox2 жыл бұрын
It’s not just half the day ab+ and the balance all blue. Their whiter part of the program has higher whites than ab% and different % of red & green than ab+. Then yea it does all go blue. It’s worth noting they also do not adjust the power to compensate for the higher white period. So during that time the par is slightly higher

What I am curious about is did your alk consumption increase or stay the same for the most part?
@TheBioReef2 жыл бұрын
Hi Marcus - Alas - DOS only keeps detailed dosing records for a month, but certainly i did notice consumption creep up a bit. Nothing quantitive, but last week, i averaged about 35.9 ml per day. Hard to know if this was the light change or just regular growth, which is why i am going to actually measure the growth rate of a few frags with the WWC spectrum, then AB+ spectrum. Thanks for watching, and please sub if you haven't already done so. cheers

Amazing.... Yeah I think some corals will do better under more blues. Jason Fox runs mostly all blue from what I have seen so not surprised about the Fox Flame - I also think it's from a little bit deeper. Wait - you are going to cut 2 frags and immediately see how they do for 2 weeks under 1 lighting and 2 weeks under another? I would think they won't do anything 2 weeks after being cut. I would cut them - leave the lighting for 2 weeks - then measure them - then measure 2 weeks later and change the lights and measure 2 weeks after that.

my comment may come across a little offensive and in some way described as a form of attack to all the hard work you have put in .With that being said i have been a long time subscriber and believe it or not first time watched your video on a big screen full resolution and i must say you can pull a lot more colour out of your acros compared to what you have atm. I would def say that par levels if bumped to 400 to 450 ish along with your No3 to 10 to 20 you might just end up pulling a lot better colours from you sps. Reason i say this is because i have a lot of the acros you keep and even under whites they look so much more colourful. There only one caveat if you white balance and camera isn't on par then possibly why i am seeing a lot less colour. Just my 2 cents

I use the all blues and violets with 1% white light. Jason Fox uses nothing but blues in his coral farm. Ever since following that I have seen amazing growth and color.

yeah i wonder if i should add a full blue experiment as well. The only thing - i really like the look of traditional 18.5K sps aB+ - just for viewing... the all blue look kinda hurts my eyes after a while....

Jason Fox uses blue t5, which are vastly different from LED. Even though it looks blue to the eye, there is still plenty of ‘white’ light in the spectrum. LED lacks this.

A month is nowhere neer enough time for anything to change it will take like six months. And the only way to really compare you would need all the corals x2 with one under ab+ and the other under wwc or one coral like you are saying but they have to be going at the same time because there are so many other factors that will change in your tank from month to month your water changes my have a little more sat from time to time flow will change because they will get clogged just a little bit all kinds of things that is going to be different from month to month and flow will definitely change the growth maybe more than light from month to month.

Hi Erik. Thanks for your feedback. I know 30 days seems to be too short, but it is actually based on scientific papers showing that corals can quickly respond to changes in light spectrum by synthesizing photopigments; have a look at my coral colors video which reviews some of the interesting experiments on this; you can see that corals can change colors within days to a one or two weeks. I agree that this is not a controlled experiment. But o think going from ab+ to wwc to ab+ will help disentangle the effect of time from light spectrum. @darksidereefer2 жыл бұрын
Don't think the time period is enough to see changes in color. People cook corals for months to get coloration. I think to get a true answer you should run the lights for 6 months. This way your corals adjust to the change, then you may some colors brighten up.

I thnk its easier to look at alk uptake.
@TheBioReef2 жыл бұрын
that sounds like a good idea, but how do you disentangle higher alk uptake because of light change from higher alk uptake because the tank is getting older and corals are getting bigger
@Brabostaan2 жыл бұрын
@@TheBioReef good question, I think the alk uptake "kicks in" instead of gradually going up. But doing the experiment in 1 tank cut and weight might be better.
