These women will sleep happily to further their chances but if some guy maintains morals and says no then easy to accuse that guy and get the publicity they want. first of off I think it's very important to clarify there is no proof of sexual harrassment. It's merely an allegation with little to no credibility. sexual harrasser are almost always repeat offendors so we would be hearing stories from multiple women not just one. There is also no legal basis here because the woman waited 40 years to talk about this whilst in law you need to press charges within 3 years. Edit: There are multiple women coming out with worse stories. I take it back, this guy is probably a sexual harrasser.

It has happened to me that we were with friends and there was a girl who always made loud and physical jokes and physically touched everyone -pushing, hugging, even groping. Once as we were joking around, she said a really rude sexual joke to me and in response while laughing I pinched her in the waist and said oh piss off. Suddenly completely out of nowhere she jumps up, shouts at me dont you EVER touch me like that again, and walks out. Everyone is literally left standing with their mouths open. Our friends even though they know I would never sexually harass anyone, shocked by the severity of her reaction, start asking, hey man did you by any chance without meaning to, touch her inappropriately or has something happened between you... Fortunately one of her friends was sitting right next to me, and she said no the dude didnt do anything shady, I saw the whole thing, they were just joking...She is just a bit unpredictable, she has strange reactions... That girl later apologized, and I really think its good that she did. Not saying this is definitely what happened with Dustin, just saying its possible, and also saying innocent till proven guilty. If I was a professional actor and at the opening of a movie that will give me and my crew money to feed our families, someone mentioned that incident assuming I am guilty every step of the way and lecturing me on things I already know, I too would be very upset.

That does play a part, if the society you live in has that kind of toxicity. Even so it does not justify his actions. So you say every woman who accuses a movie star in order to sell her book automatically tells the truth? Because that is what *you* are implying. There is a culture of abuse in Hollywood, but instead of adressing it, people like you look for big names and enjoy when they get taken down, no matter how flimsy the accusations are. While the unknown agents, producers and casting agents get your absolution to rape as much as they want. Because you are simply not interested in evidence, plausibility or facts. It is all about big names and juicy scandals. This wave will roll out and nothing will have changed, and simpletons like you will be happy with the result.

Everyone has to calm down and get some 50 shades of grey into the argument. If we call a touch, a pinch or a grab on someone's ass sexual assault, which may be technically correct, we make the mistake of losing differentiation of acts and people who commit the act. Why? Because sexual assault also includes anal rape of children. And we cant possibly want to imply grabbing a 17 year old on her butt (which is what Hoffmann ALLEGEDLY did) is somehow the same category in what the worst crimes of a child molester are also in. We are talking about Dustin Hoffmann here. The man has been a legend for decades. He is 80 years old. In that 80 years the worst thing he ALLEGEDLY did was grab an 17 year old on her butt. That is not nice, that is not something to be proud of. But it is nothing like roofing and raping women in the dozens, it's nothing like using the casting couch to basically rape aspiring actresses. If Hoffmann did it, he made a mistake. He made that mistake 40 years ago. Everyone has to get fucking over it. If there is a legal case bring it to the legal system, if there is a heinous crime that is past the statue of limitations, make it public. But if it is a grab on the ass 40 fucking years ago- just shut up and swallow it and leave the headline space to more important issues other than your inability to move on and taking responsibility for your own actions.

What crime was committed? He said some things "Allegedly" that made a woman uncomfortable. That's not a crime. Accusations are not always truth, what planet do you people live on? What happened to innocent until proven guilty. Sorry people but that's the country we live in. Thank God! I also believe that unfortunately guilty people sometimes go free, because of lack of evidence. and even more disturbing innocent people get punished for something they didn't do. but I will say this, "I would rather have 1000 guilty people go free for lack of evidence, than see one person spend one day in prison for something they did not do."
@David_Bower

John was only asking questions, this was no trial, Dustin agreed to this before the interview, what did John do wrong? If he didn't want to be questioned about these allegations here then he could have agreed beforehand to have been interviewed afterwards instead, even by somebody else providing they wouldn't just give him an easy ride. If I was being wrongfully accused of something similar I'd want to be interviewed immediately to clear my name, I would never have apologised for anything because I hadn't done anything wrong and would have categorically denied every allegation made. Hoffman's reaction and responses I thought were quite telling. I'm no judge and that's why I do say alleged, but the accuser does most certainly sound very believable and I have no reason to doubt her.

Thing is, this is more complex than many on both sides are acknowledging. Because yes, its entirely true that this sort of reaction IS how men have gotten away with it. ...BUT it wouldn’t work if it wasn’t sometimes true. My feeling on this particular case: Oliver was being fair from his perspective. Its a valid question. Hoffman didn’t handle it well because he’s an old man, a little behind the times now (but was way ahead, in his day - far more so than Oliver is now. And that’s why people still cheer). Hoffman probably didn’t do anything unusual or out of line *for the time*. But he’s being called out because the times have changed, and somebody wanted to boost book sales by attaching a big-name public scandal to it. I think there are bigger fish to fry, and getting bogged down with a borderline case like Hoffman's is a waste of energy at best. I mean, he's not accused of rape or hitting on 14-year-olds or drugging anyone or pressuring into sex or retaliating for a refusal. just trying to cheer someone up in a way thats now considered inappropriate (rightly so) but wasn't 40 years ago. Arguing about whether something that picayune that long ago happened or not just isn't worth our time. Lets spend our energy making sure this doesn't happen *now*.

Frankly I'd like to punch that John Oliver in the mouth for being an opportunistic prick - I've heard Hoffman speak of his early sex life and even pinching women on the butts in movies to loosen them up, he's no sexual assaulter and Oliver should know it if he'd bothered to do any research. He did it to Katherine Ross in The Graduate - she was pissed off for a few minutes then realized that yes she was uptight and it showed in her acting. After that they became good friends. This sexual "misconduct" garbage has gone on long enough. Women aren't a protected fucking species, they can't have everything. This witch hunt is all about CONTROL ... women controlling men. When people protest, and you feel uncomfortable, then it forces you to be introspective. Then you have to ask yourself why you feel that way about what he's saying. That's the point to why a person protests. It's meant to rock the boat a little. If you are fine with the way things are, then perhaps you aren't challenging yourself enough. I'm a woman and I know what it's like to be sexually abused. Watching this video after reading Hoffman's accusers story gives me hope that we will begin to talk about our problems as a society in a real and sometimes uncomfortable way. Thanks for taking the time to read this.

I think you misunderstood.I was saying that Dustin Hoffman was protesting too much (from Shakespeare meaning somebody is too defensive indicating guilt). If the allegations had no merit Hoffman would have very quickly and strongly dismissed them, which he didn't do. I 100% agree with you about the importance of protest in general as well as eliminating any and all permissiveness with regard to sexual harassment.

Everyone's got a right to defend themselves but if someone accused me of something totally false that is destroying my reputation I wouldn't say things like 'things happened between shoots' and shift responsibility onto someone bringing in young girls. Completely innocent people don't talk like that, guilty people talk like that. I would categorically deny anything happened, call the accusers lies, threaten to sue and move onto the film: the opposite of what he did. I don't think John had any malice intent with asking the question. I think it took an odd turn in Dustin answering the question. Dustin seemed more offended that he asked the question because his work should tell the world that he is the opposite of what he has been accused of and that is not the case. People aren't going to think you're one way because of some personal experience you've had on a movie set and a private conversation you had with your wife. It's sad that someone's entire lifetime of study and work, gets swept out of frame, when you put a magnifying glass over some of the perhaps, glaring missteps they'd taken in that time. I'm not blaming Oliver either, he is being true to himself, pointing out a wrong, while at the same time being respectful where he can. This is actually a really valuable talk, however ugly and painful it may be, for both sides. But we need to understand our behaviour much better in order for our daughters, sisters and mothers to live freely. I know that there's gold-diggers, liars, piece of shit women just as there are men, of course there are, that's just statistics and humans driven, by the arbitrary pressures of the collective struggle of life. This conversation really needed to happen. I am just as proud if not prouder of both men after listening to this, they're both heroes of mine and shall continue to be so, despite doing bad things. There are few true saints and that's ok. There's still a lot of good in the world and we need to keep improving that's all.. because that's the pith of sentience, of being human - To try and keep evolving.

But he did not "rationalize" it, he explained the context and why he was not wrong but it simply was a misundertanding. One does not have to apologize just because people feel offended or misunderstood something. The fact that the accusations went from alleged rape in Weinstein's case to trying to end someone's career by discussing whether touching someone could have been accidental pretty much shows that the sexism problem is not going to be solved by this wave of public outcries, as rather than aiming for the biggest missteps, the target are just the biggest names, no matter how insignificant their actions are compared to the average everyday sexism. Going down that road is a missed opportunity, which might will take the heads of some Louis CK, but will change nothing about the culture.

After what has happened to ALL who are merely alleged without trial, and some alleged denying the allegations, it puts Dustin Hoffman in a position of literally fighting for his life. Meaning his career, his respect, his legacy, his relationship to his community. This is like watching a witch trial where very few survive. It's hard to watch but extremely entertaining, like watching a man defend himself one last chance before he goes to the gallows, trying to convince the towns people not to lynch him, except it's in front of 323 million people.

it is so easy to judge it is so easy to judge others it is so easy to judge others while they are still here; the best line of defence is to say Yes I did that 40 years ago. John Oliver for a pope!

Even if what he did wasn't illegal and even if he only did it once, ethically, it is still unjustifiable. Saying that it was the times and that it was family on the set is such a cop out. Obviously, saying that "this was the times" only applies to the men because those times were HORRIBLE for women. But don't go making excuses for yourself. Just own up to it and move on. I just hope this is the ONLY person we hear about who is accusing Dustin Hoffman of inappropriate sexual advances and/or conduct.

If you read her own words, she confronted him about it because she was uncomfortable, he apologized at the time and stopped the behavior -- with no detrimental affect to her employment. Again, she documents all of these details. She also admitted that even though she thought of him as a letch at the time, she still liked him. This was a grasp for attention over a matter that was settled 30 years ago by two adults when it happened.

Either it's the montage or Hoffman is all over the place. You'd think his agent would have prepared a statement for him on the subject and make him memorise it.

Kenneth Garcia This whole subject of sexual harassment and how accusations of such should be handled is very disturbing. Men and woman relationships are complicated! Each looks for something from the other and depend on signaling which is sometimes difficult to decipher. No one argues about the clear black-and-white incidents, but there are grey zones in which more subtler issues of interpretation both on what was suggested by someone and what an action's intentions were come into play. Many individuals would like to have the judgment of these events not be seen as nebulous because they may have an agenda or be concerned that people are getting away with things they should not. Certainly their are predators, but one can understand this in their character in terms of how they have chosen to live generally and how they act within certain circumstances. The broader context of an individual's history of conduct needs to be considered for someone who has done considerable good and acted morally. All these individuals are not Bill Cosby putting tranquillizers in woman's drinks before having sex with them. All these people are not heterosexually-awkward, affluent politicians preying on minors. There are degrees of impropriety that need to be considered in all these accusations rather than lump the accused all in one basket! Take further that, over a period of 30-40 years, views of what constitutes acceptable social conduct among adults subtly shifts. I am also concerned with John Oliver's logic! While I have enjoyed his show from it's onset and feel it plays a vital role in educating the public about very critically important topics, his holier-than-thou attitude and his insistence that Dustin Hoffman's accuser has no reason not to be telling the truth is simply absurd! Firstly, people say things all the time to gain attention for secondary gain. Secondly, people often misinterpret the intentions of others. Thirdly, neuroscience has proven that memory of distant events often becomes reinterpreted over time. Again, it is critical that people always do their best to respect the healthy and necessary autonomy and interests of others, whether it be based on sex, race, age, wealth and the lack thereof or whatever attribute might influence behavior. But this lynch mob mentality has to stop! People should be respectful of others. While no disrespect is acceptable, undesirable events need to be addressed with an attempt to recognize their context and severity. There should be some consideration regarding the meaning and interpretation of all such interactions, particularly within the context of the participant's lives. And when a balanced impartial process has been applied, some mandatory therapy and signs of contrition should be expected. There should be as impartial and informed a forum to adjudicate such matters. For such a process to go directly from accusation to guilty-as-charged to condemnation is simply wrong!

Hahaha, he just said that he never knew her or if he seen her it was in concert with many others, THEN he WAS sitting on a bed with her during a take and trying to do a script. TERRIBLE LIAR, but people will still believe him b/c they like him.

Who knows but him and her. His reputation as a person of integrity preceded the allegations! I believe him. I would want more women come forward. The others accused all had the same MO each time and many accusers.
