WWE Royal Rumble 2008: Jeff Hardy vs Randy Orton (SmackDown vs RAW 2009)

At WWE Unforgiven 2006, John Cena defeated Edge in a TLC match to win his third WWE Championship. Cena held onto the title for over a year, but unfortunately had to relinquish the belt following a torn triceps injury. In his place, Randy Orton became WWE Champion, and for the rest of 2007 took down all challengers that stood in his path.
When 2008 rolled around, Randy Orton was intent on holding onto the WWE Championship heading into WrestleMania 24. However, in order to do so, Randy Orton would have to overcome a new challenger in the form of Jeff Hardy. The Charismatic Enigma had been enjoying another reign as Intercontinental Champion at the time, but Hardy was ready to try and win his first world championship. The match between two of RAW's top young superstars was scheduled for Royal Rumble 2008, bringing us to our contest here today.
