Germany's anthem is by Joseph Haydn, so a real household name, but to me, it always seemed a little 'meh' to me, and I'm not even beginning to talk about the obviously problematic history of its use. This one string quartet where Haydn uses the melody is the best thing that has ever happened to it. The French anthem on the other hand is harmonically very interesting, especially in that part 'Ils viennent jusque dans vos bras...' etc. (That part is a little graphic.), really original. I love its almost operatic sound, and in my opinion, the arrangement by Hector Berlioz is unbeatable, its so mindblowingly awesome and noisy, so theatrical and epic. I have both German and French roots, both countries with great musical traditions, but France clearly made the better choice with its anthem.
