I appreciate this video so much. I play in bands and am looking to spend more of my downtime recording and writing on my own. Your channel has been inspiring and a good push to move forward with things. Also, I’m constantly amazed at the level of gear that we can get for home video/audio recording. It’s light years beyond where it was even 10 years ago.

I love this. The fact that you can do as much as you do with the little space that you have is a testament to how anybody can really get into this. I found your channel early this year, and I’ve been super grateful that I have because it’s been crazy and informative and helping me to understand my own equipment that I’ve used for years a little bit better. Keep up the good work.

Such a sick video. When I first left my day job and started doing music full time, I had a desk with a laptop and a midi controller in the corner of our bedroom. I recorded and mixed a lot of music at that desk that I’m really proud of. If you can be strategic, the space you’re in doesn’t matter too much.

Thanks for making this "different" type of video, it really helps ground perspective. Timing was perfect too as I was just lamenting my space limitations. I have a modest but quality collection of outboard gear that I'm not using because I don't feel like putting the effort into setup and tear down. "If only I had a reasonably sized room dedicated to recording..." needs to exit from my brain and I need to put a little more creative effort into making my current space work. Thanks!

I put a TON of work into making things look and sound polished and professional on the channel. It’s important for me both as someone who just cares a ton about what I do and also so that I’m representing well when brands entrust me with explaining their stuff. But I also want to make sure nobody ever comes away from what I make thinking it’s remotely out of reach because it absolutely isn’t.

Yeah the best part about buying all these awesome expensive reverbs is when we stop using them. Sounds funny but it's totally true. I like most of my fx very subtle. But some of these things cost a lot of $$$ so you feel the need to crank them up get your money's worth. So fight the urge I say. Spend all your money on equipment & don't use it!!! Keep it raw & unadulterated.

Highly informative and encouraging. I work in a small loft room with a double sloping roof on either side. It has been treated with foam, has a short, tight sweet spot for loose mixing, and the finish is done on the same DT770s, but to be honest, I feel better in smaller spaces, where everything is in ‘swivel distance’! I’ve not been comfortable in larger rooms - it’s like my thoughts escape too easily 😊.

This is your best video ever, I've been buying lots of gear that you recommended hoping to move to a better place some day since my home is not much suitable for making music for different reasons. But this shows that you don't need a $200k studio to make great sounding music.

Thank you. And yeah the vast majority of my time making music was on a recording rig for like no money. Even if you go back like a year on this channel you’ll see me recording on an Apollo twin mki I bought used for like $350 and an ikea desk that cost less than $50. It’s great to have been able to grow it to what it even is now but none of that is remotely NEEDED to write and mix great sounding stuff

The BeyerDynamic 770 are really good, the others too - I use the 880 Pro all the time. Give Soundworks a try, just for when you are mixing, does make them sound even better. Another nice upgrade is the incredibly good Topping L-30 II headphone amps that are a little over $100. I've been enjoying bass more since I got the nice compact Ampeg SVT-210. Using it with a small head like the Ampeg Venture, Darkglass Microtubes 200, or even the Aguilar. It's definitely more satisfying playing bass through at least a 1x12" or 2x10". I have the MOSFET Micro VR, but you have to replace out the fan, or put it the head away from the mic, say behind your curtain. So wouldn't recommend those as much for recording.

Ah i missed that live 😭 I can see the Echo Fix 😍 give it a hug from me ! Yes to have many imputs can be very important , I do not why they sell stuff with one or 2 imputs, its mostly not even enough to record your own guitar, these days. yes I do not need all the option but many imputs is a must have for me. Yes start recording with what you have and get skilled is the most important, even with just an old kassette tape recorder from thr 80ties you should start with, there can be very good results with a lot of experimenting also when the possibilities are limited, you will learn a lot and be proud and happy with your 1st recordings, Kurt Cobain did record also his music very cheap at home before going into a studio. At least when you not very experimental you learn how you could sound on a record when you want it like you have done it or to avoid to sound on a record in a specific way.

The 2 input stuff really *can* be all you need for 80% of work so long as you have the patience to change inputs when you need to or even just use something like the Franklin switcher (high value for that kind of space). I still have an Apollo solo that lives in my bad for mobile mixing / tracking simple stuff on the road. I lived entirely in dual input interfaces for years and it’s a great place to start out

If you listen back to the last couple years on the channel it’s VERY evident that there’s an iterative process to my tracks getting more polished and professional sounding. There’s never been a single silver bullet along the way and it’s all just been a result of “I write, record, and mix at least two songs a week, ever week” and it’s almost impossible to not accidentally get better over time when you do that.
