I always switch the moggles out for healing and cooling in the other seasons, its a trade off of annoyances but you never need to worry about cold if you have the warming (and hold a thermal stone for some reason? It heats it up even more than it heats you up) and vice versa, also the lower clockwork aggro range means you can get almost everything in the ruins without aggroing them which is kind of insane.

I don't really like how the thermal circuit makes food spoil faster but that's just me Edit: nevermind, seasons already alter the spoilage time of food, using a cold circuit for summer or a hot circuit for winter just cancels out the food spoilage bonuses for that season

I don't think so. It would give reasonable downside for the upside you chose over the health. 100 HP isn't something ridiculous, some characters have less and manage themselves well. You can choose to have slightly better HP than normal or significantly less for a boon of choice. Seems fair to me and even if the boon ain't as fancy as other characters have, the flexibility potential makes up for it, or at least would if swapping was encouraged over crafting just one setup and being done with his entire kit for the rest of the game.

As a long time wx78 main I initially agreed 100% with this take on the update, but after playing it for awhile I'm starting to realize just how scary it is to get caught in the atrium during a rare autumn rain without any protection or alternative light sources to the opto circuit, or getting frozen by an ice hound and getting your heater circuit deactivated while fighting mactusks. I've even started starving while fighting dragonfly and almost lost my speed. It's made for some really intense close calls. The health reduction is also very noticeable and I really appreciate when I have an extra pin to spend on health or hunger, although I still do agree that they should go all the way down to 100, including sanity which is actually still at 150. Lastly, although some circuits will definitely see more use than others, the inbalance isn't as bad as I initially thought. You CAN just use speed + opto forever, but if you take the time to switch in a sanity module or two for fuelweaver the fight is a lot easier, and there are plenty of other examples like that. I believe that I will use every circuit at some point in my run, even the chorus circuit - sometimes I like to take a spring to stock up on farm plants and a chorus + illumination combo would prolly be my choice for this. I'll definitely use electrification on bee queen in the late game when I can swap out bone armors, and a beanbooster/hunger + illumination combo would be really nice for an autumn spent building. TLDR, I agree with all your points, but the problems aren't quite as bad as you say.

For a downside WX could rust over time and he'd need to every now and again takeout and "renew" his circuts. I'd be like Wormwoods blooming states. A fun idea i had was to make him an opposite of Willow, as a robot he produces heat making it harder to freeze and easier to overheat. WX-78 would struggle with seasonal hazards cause he wasn't made for harsh weather conditions, so: autumn is a safe start to the game as always, winter could be easier but still not safe because he loses all charges upon being frozen, spring allways sucks for him and summer would make him overheat + it'd speed up the rusting process. Overall this would encourage swapping out circuits depending on a season or sacrificing armour for weather gear to keep on using better circuits.

+ some general changes: Adding a way to fix (renew) circuits could make them more expensive to create. Buffing the aoe effects of the thermal circuits could make WX a better team player instead of a 1 man army. All base stats reduced to 100 is a great idea because that would allow for... Changing all of the stat increasing circuits into passive stat regen. (bigger change) Allow him to build a cooling machine, like a dragon furnace but for cold instead.

Rusting is actually a really good idea for a downside, maybe your circuits would get knocked out of you if they were rusted and you got it. and because the things get removed from top to bottom that one rusty speed modal at the bottom that you never removed will take out everything above it when you get hit and basically completely uncharge you because you were too lazy to unplug it and swap it out for something else while it was being cleaned.

rusting is a good idea, makes thematic sense. I like the idea of circuits being more expensive if you can repair them. rusting could happen passively and get sped up by rain. I'm not really a fan of seasonal perks though, they feel a bit one-dimensional IMO because they're such a binary thing - they're either affecting you or they're not.

@@FreddoFilms I've been fixing up this concept in Lua for a while and I think this could work pretty well without the seasonal weaknesses. I have been trying to figure out how rusting would work and I like the idea green sunset pitched, so I made 2 versions of this mechanic. 1st version: if port is unused for a while it rusts lowering its effectiveness so you'd need to remove the circut to clean the port to the point of usability. 2nd version: Rusting would have 3 stages: s.0 - no effects apply, s.1 - WX would gain less circuit benefits, s.2 - WX performs tasks slower then usual (building, crafting, fighting), he'd gain even less circuit benefits and if he gets hit the bottom circuit fells off losing durability, to prevent rusting you could apply wax made from ashes and honeycomb or when WX is fully rusted he'd return to normal upon being struck by lightning. I'm trying to find a middle ground between these 2 but can't quite get it right.

I've been also trying to make the hunger and sanity buff circuits more useful. I'm thinking of making the hunger circuit lower your hunger drain instead of increasing max hunger, since WX is powered by food it would work more like energy saving instead of adding an extra battery. Sanity circuit could be the opposite of maxwell's decrease in max sanity when using the shadow puppets, giving WX higher minimum sanity to a point where with a single sanity circuit v2 you would still be able to be attacked by a shadow creature, but only one at a time. When I tested my version of the sanity circuit, I've found out that it's actually pretty good when going on the loonar island cause having 20 sanity on a lunar biome is still safe and when exiting the biome you'll still have some sanity left to not get instantly killed by a shadow.

@@i.k5696 Lmao, yes he is. Before he could have 50% speed, 400 hp, a constant light source and was protected from freezing. Now he can't even have half of that at the same time. While he got some cool new utility things, that's all he is now. More complex and probably more fun for most people sure, but he is very subpar to what he was before.

The 50% and light from overcharge means you had to get struck by lightning which means you needed a wickerbottom to use it also having constant 400 health isn’t needed as armour and health are a thing. Having a super wide arsenal is way better as he can one (if you think health matters) get 500 health. Two have constant moggles/heat/ cold immunity plus 25% movement speed with no accessories and three (you speed addict) have 55%speed (also without accessories) his versatility makes him way stronger and fun to play over “ slave read book now (munches on gears)”

I mean I can explain a few ideas If the wx is teamed with a wi he can swap his stuff out for others Like one to help the team through trips if a area is to cold or hot A good all card for resource gathering A mega tank Self sustain (the jelly one is actually good now) Or a great boss killer/map explorer (3 speeds or 2 speed 1 health) Also a possible debuff could be that every time he keeps on it it loses durability unless maintained It won't break if it hits zero, but will shatter once removed

My head canon makes the animation tie into the rework too. I believe the heart module is what allowed WX to add gears to himself infinitely. It was basically a 6 slot module that was moddable with gears. when WX tore it out and destroyed it, he opened up his modification modules again at the expense of the heart module. This sounds stupid as the tradeoff is massive, but given the fact that WX now knows the heart module also holds his memories, he will never put it back in even if its fixed (By winona say,)

I think that a big problem about this update is that wx wasn't improved as a team player. Before playing it i thought that the heat/cold circuit would be nice to help your frinds, but after playing with a wx on the team I can safely say that they make so little difference. Rework is still super fun, but i wish there was a benefit to heaving a robot on the team.

I think this is kind of intentional considering WX's personality. you can technically use the heat, cool, and music box circuits as team boosting abilities (they require annoying positioning, though.)

I think that removing circuit durability (possibly increasing crafting cost to offset this) and letting players choose which circuits to remove would incentivize players to swap circuits to be more versatile rather than sticking to one general use "build."

Very good rework in my opinion, the water downside has been given more risks, and a lot of your circuits will benefit your teammates too! I helped my friends go to the ruins during winter by equipping a Thermal Circuit and an Illumination one, I was a walking campfire for them throughout all of winter! Same for summer, this refresh can be all about teamwork instead of the previous selfish benefits Wx's upsides had before

My usual setup is having the light circuit first then use the other half of my bar between heating and cooling or anything else i might want. I like to change things up. I also dont like using the speed all that much until i properly learn kiting at normal speed. I do use the speed circuits early to get uber fast exploration.

Sounds interesting, but he then has no access to armour or backpack, so they need to make "inventory expansion" fairly cheap and it seems to add nothing just banning WX-78 from normal armour and amulets and adding them as exclusive items that still use body slot

When I went to say Hi to mac tusk on my first WX run, I hadnt taken into account that the hounds freezing me would make me lose charge and deactivate my heat circuit, so I immediately started freezing to death with no way of heating up, and that almost killed me, but it is true WX lacks a proper downside, now I just systematically avoid freeze and water and nothing bad ever happens

Maybe you could have an option with the meter to overload it effectively breaking your installed circuits but giving them increased strength for a reasonably short time kinda like Wendy’s buff potions in a way it would make people use different circuits every so often

There is already plenty of incentive to change circuits around. For autumn yeah moggles and speed is the way to go, but in winter you can scan df and not have to worry about freezing, as well as fighting klaus notgoing even below 0° with the ice deer spell. But since it takes 3 slots, you can't use mogglr circuit and switch to light circuit or some other 3 slot combo. Same for summer, just need to scan deerclops, but it's better since you're a fridge and food spoils slower, meaning you're 2 iceboxes and then some more with a backpack. There are more interesting combos, like if in spring you fight a boss with electric circuits, you do a lot of dmg just tanking them, and especially with bq, wearing bramble husk, eyebrella/thulecite crown + warly's fish cordon bleu, can make for an easy bq, and it's not all that impractical with the bramble husk buff they gave alongside the refresh. You just gotta think more with the combos and not just stick with the moggle-speed combo for convenience's sake.

I think its really backwards how they did the meter and the circuits. The meter is only drained and the circuits damaged when you take the circuits out. Its like the game is screaming at you "dont waste time making circuits! Just pick a few you like!" Which I dislike, I feel they should instead be drained as they are used and when you take them out you could repair them, with, say, bio data to make use of all of that useful meat knowledge

The circuits shouldn't have durability in my opinion. The time it takes for circuits to recharge is all it really needs. The circuits being able to break punishes players for trying to experiment with new combinations. A lot of people have suggested that circuits should break over time instead, but I'd disagree. WX-78's main theme as a character is the ability to permanently upgrade himself. Removing that aspect would water down his character identity. I think the best manner for limiting WX-78 is simply adding more sources for wetness than just rain or rowing boats and increase the damage from them. If there was a more consistent threat of losing your charge, it'd indirectly add to what would normally be a small, seasonal downside.

The electric meter should go down slowly and you can only get it back by eating gears or getting shocked or they add new crafting items to help wx with electricity. Maybe electricity can be a form of healing dispute 25% electric energy to shock near by enemys and steal hp

I actually think I've cracked the code. Instead of losing durability every time they're removed (incentivsing keeping the same circuits in forever), they should only lose a small amount of durability per day, and the current 25% on death. Manual removal with the tool you spawn with should be free, and that would encourage way more experimentation.

My take on WX rework is based on the idea that all characters in don't starve revolve around being good at any of the following: Survival, Damage, and Support. Examples include Wilson, who's decent at survival, Wortox, who's good at Support, and Wolfgang who's great for Damage. Most characters are either above average at 2 things or great at one thing, but sucks/lacks at another. For example, Wanda excels at damage, but her survivability suck, Warly's support is great, but his survivability is hindered and he has not consistent damage buffs, and Wigfrid has good damage and support but weak survivability. WX always excels at survivability, but had nothing for damage or support. Now their survivability is more specialized, instead of general high stats, with occasional speed and freezing immunity, now you have to either focus on one stat or have a meh increase at all. In that vane, WX's main combat advantage was and still was being able to tank, however, more damage always is preferred over health in more larger fights, but now they can more specialize in either health, speed, or recoil to improve their odds at boss fights, but they still pail in comparison to Wigfrid, Wolfgang, and Wanda. WX's main trade off now is that they have to focus on what stat to maximize for the situation instead of having 200 hunger, 300 sanity, and 400 health with no trade off. TLDR: WX's main strengths is their survivability, to make up for their lack of damage or support, however, now is more specialized to the needs/want of the player, compared to an overall buff (but that stat is better that pre-rework WX)

Other than the music box WX Doesn't really provide much utility for the team that he can only do. The only thing he does best is be a killing machine just without any damage modifers like others but focus on upgraded base stats and misc perks. Although speed circuits are good making him the best scavenger in the game. But when farms and Teleportations exist it feels lack luster. Speed circuits are good in boss fights though but still Backstep and soulhop s exists. Definitely needs another rework.

No meaningful downsides still for WX. Just better Wilson with no playstyle. If the circuits had their own downsides attached, that would certainly help him be interesting. He still needs a downside and tangible upside by default though.

If you pay attention, they are only ever called a they in the game and outside of the game, and are called Mx, the gender neutral version of Mr or Ms, by Maxwell (and maybe other characters too I dunno, can’t remember all the interaction quotes) Klei has also explicitly _talked about_ WX being nonbinary, and their title screen theme song is called "Nonbinary Code", and I’m sure there’s other things that point to it that I could mention but I can’t remember it rn I just woke up. Anyway, WX is certainly not a he, and I’m not sure why the majority of the fandom seems to call them one.

And we don't really know how WX calls himself and since he's a robot he doesn't really have a gender. Btw I don't care, i just call him he because I'm a homophobe

@@Ne_Ne_Vova_UA "They" _is_ used to mean a lot of people, but it is also very commonly used as pronouns for a singular person and has been since forever. It’s just the gender neutral version of he or she, used for people you don’t know the gender of or people who don’t identify as a he or a she. For example, think about like if you found someone’s lost wallet or something, you could say "Oh, this must belong to a stranger. I should try and return it to _them!"_ . Gender neutral pronouns are a very common thing that people use in everyday life, a lot of people just seem to not realise it. But yeah people who use they/them pronouns aren’t trying to say they’re a lot of people, they simply don’t feel like a she or a he so they use different ones. Sex, gender, and pronouns are three different things and are very complex, it’s tough to explain. Especially since I am cisgender, so I don’t know what the experience of being nonbinary is like. But all of my closest friends are some form of trans or nonbinary, and I will not tolerate any disrespect of them. And WX does not have the consciousness of Wagstaff, WX used to be Wagstaff’s lab partner. They became violent and mean, and did harmful experiments behind Wagstaff’s back, so when he found out he sent them to The Constant. That’s why they hate Wagstaff. I have no idea how you watched their short and interpreted it as them having the consciousness of Wagstaff. Anyway, don’t speak to me anymore please. I don’t talk to transphobes. I was just happy that a youtuber finally respected my favourite character enough to not misgender them :(

I strongly disagree. A lot of WX-78's circuits are viable, not just the Optoelectronic and Acceleration 2.0 circuits. For example: personally, I don't have any problems when it comes to summer or winter, but freezing and overheating are annoying nonetheless, so I just equip the Heat or Refrigeration Circuits and that's it. The Electric Circuit is absolutely overpowered when it comes to facetanking, health can be always useful (specially for newer players), sanity can be useful when fighting Crab King, as the player needs A LOT of sanity for the Ice Staffs, etc. The only two circuits that are truly useless are the Acceleration Circuit 1.0 and the Chorus Box one. It's not the dev's fault that we don't want to switch circuits, because there are many reasons to do so.
