Only a professional mechanic with at least a decade of experience with oils, engine teardowns, and seeing the same engine since new go over 300k can tell you like myself. There are so many factors and variables. I can easily tell someone how long they can drive if they tell me their variables and they may not be able to find them out at all like average speed and oil consumption. It's difficult and took me almost a decade of experience and knowledge to be able to have a say. I can prescribe exact time and milage ratings to my customers but only if I have the specifics known. I recommend a customer with a Mitsubishi mirage to drive 15-16k with Pennzoil platinum 10w-30 because I've uoa tested the oil before and I have the variables of her average speed, mpg, and engine and total vehicle specs that attribute to oil wear and also know those Mitsubishi engines on top of that. She's put on almost 110k on it last time it came since new. No oil burning and still clean inside. I'm not worried about her engine at all. That shatco CVT is what is more important and I've changed the fluid on it once and will have to again next time actually.

Very good point. What I think now is that people have to above all consider the type driving they are doing. The driving most people do represents severe duty. They don't want to concede that. Myself, I have a 2001 4cyl Toyota Camry. I use conventional oil and change it at 2500 miles. It's too easy to do on that engine. No one ever did damage to an engine because they changed the oil too soon. Doing it the way I do, I don't have to worry about whether synthetic is better than conventional. Or what kind of driving I'm really doing. Or how long I can wait. I just do it, and I know I always have clean oil in there. My driving undoubtedly qualifies as severe duty. Yep, and most newer cars made post 2012 can only be serviced at the stealership so the days of DIY or taking it to the independent mechanic are coming to an end. I run 10,000 mile oil change intervals in all my engines never had a problem and I only run Redline Group V Ester Based Synthetic oils. Group III oils are just hydro cracked which means the oil is put under a higher pressure during the refining process to remove more of the contamination from the oil. The molecules are all different shapes and sizes so the oil wears out quicker than a true Group IV PAO or Group V Ester Synthetic oil. Car runs like a top as an every day driver. I had doubted the 10,000 mile interval until I researched it. Not saying it is recommended in every case just what my results are. I would also say, nothing at all wrong changing it more often. More often can’t hurt. If I had known I was keeping this car 14 years plus, I might have opted 5,000 interval as I now hope to join the 300,000 mile club with this one. Toyota builds a quality product very capable of running 240,000 and beyond on their recommended interval. I’m not sure about other manufacturers.

I have not had any trouble out of this car whatsoever. It's still runs like a brand new vehicle. It now has 110,000 miles on it. I am going to continue changing it at the 10,000 mile interval. Why waste money on needless oil chaneges. The older cars definitely needed to change every 3,000 miles. Newer vehicles are made with a lot tighter specifications and clearances. Not much blow-by to contaminate the oil from the rings etc. Plus the synthetic oil does a lot better job of lubricating and not breaking down with high operating temperatures. The oil simply does not get dirty enough to do any damage on extended oil changes. Just go by the manufacturer's recommendations and your owner's manual and your engine will last a long time.

I tend to agree that if you drive sensibly and in a good climate, changing oil and filters only once a year or every 10,000km won’t cause your engine to self destruct. Modern oils are claimed to be good for 10,000 to 15,000 km. Oil companies wouldn’t risk litigation by having their products implicated in engine failures. So, more frequent oil changes are uneconomic (for the owner, not the workshop). Most vehicles will develop other issues like rust, wiring, cooling, seals and hoses etc around the 12 to 15 year mark that means even long term owners will likely trade them well before the engine dies. As for the latest high tech cars so reliant on computers, we have yet to see how long they last, but I bet it won’t be the engines giving up first for want of an oil change.

If your one thinking your gas powered car can go 10,000 miles between oil changes, you need to ask yourself, How many oil samples have you done from fill to dump. Most cars it will be 7500 miles. But if you own a Kia, you may rue the day their dealers told you 7500 on conventional/synthetic blend oil changes. Theres more that goes into this that I think your overlooking. Your engines pistons will get a little bit of unburned gas passed the rings, this will also carry anything else in the combustion chamber as well back down into the crank case. This is why the manufacturer recomends x amount of miles. Dilution of oil and other contamination in the oil thats cycling through the engine. Theres also the heat fluctuation that reduces the oils viscovity over long periods of time. It dhould always be checked at least 1 time a week, but in most cases i would say do what the dealer/manufacturers recomend. If you own a Kia with a 1.6/2.0/2.0T/2.4, do them around 4500 miles.

Take it from me and I'm sure you will say he's right. I've been changing my own oil for years. Fact is the engines have changed over the years as well. Back in the 80s I did conventional oil changes ever 3 months or 3,000 miles. Oil back then you could buy it at about $1.39 a quart and the filter was about , $1.89 or less. Then the synthetic generation of oils started booming. Then $2.59 a quart and a synthetic grade filter about 2.99 and I started to switch to the synthetic even though I didn't need it. I started seeing a difference in power, gas milage, and a cleaner, smoother , cooler running motor, so I have been using it ever since. I do 2 oil changes a year because I drive about 12,000 miles per year. My engine is still doing great. So I say that's a reasonable amount of time between oil changes, I've never regretted it to this day. If you do that, you, too, will have the same or better results. If you want your oil to look like glue by waiting 1 year, then please proceed to listen to those who want you to blow a motor by saying it's OK going longer. Remember who has to pay for that mistake. What you put into something is what you get out of it.

I live in Turkey and in the user manual of my Kia brand vehicle, which I bought in 2013, it is written that I should change the oil every 15,000 km or once a year. However, in the same manual, it defines some situations as difficult conditions and if I use my vehicle in these situations, it reduces this change interval to half, that is, 6,000 km or 6 months. In my country, 90 percent of vehicles are used in these difficult conditions. However, authorized services change the oil at 10,000 or 15,000 km, which also suits the users, and I have not seen a single vehicle that complies with these long change intervals that does not burn oil when it reaches 100,000 km. Most of the vehicles that exceed 100,000 km in my country have serious problems in the engine and burn oil. Oil is cheap, filter is cheap. Watch a few videos on how to do it, buy oil and oil filters from well-known companies and do your own oil change yourself. Short intervals are the best. These programs force you to buy a new car. The modern economy wants to sell new products all the time. Maintenance and repairs do not make their wheels turn. Throw out the old and buy new, they say.

My 2011 Lexus RX350 had the last Oil change done a little over three thousand miles ago! computer says it's time! yes but i know synthetic oil (which is recommended for this vehicle ) lasts twice as much under normal driving conditions will not push it though, in the next thousand miles or so will change it again!... this particular engine purrs like a kitten ! and want to keep it that way.....

Normally do 5k miles full synthetic...proably overkill and given not a very dusty area 7.5k miles is ok.

I've always thought it's hard to beat following the manufacturer's guideline. I have run a bunch of vehicles past the 250,000 mile mark that way, and it hasn't ever been engine failure that took 'em down. Don't ask someone who stands to make a profit...

Of course the manufacturer recommends 10-12,000 mile intervals, they'll gladly sell you an engine for $8,000 right after your powertrain warranty has run out. Newer, more complex engines depend on clean oil of the correct viscosity to drive variable valve timing components, timing chain tensioners, etc... 5k miles or less and a quality filter, aka, not FRAM

Fram ultra is one of the best filters out there.

10k is perfectly fine.

I have used fram for years without any trouble.

I change oil and filter every 2,500 miles on three vehicles. Vehicles have, 220,000, 145,000 and 35,000 miles. No, (knock on wood) engine problems, yet. Balance and rotate tires every 5,000 miles. I'm a retired A & P Aircraft Mechanic by trade.

I change the oil in my wife's Kia every 5k miles because it's a Kia. I change the oil in my Mustang GT every 10 to 12 months. I'm retired and hardly put any miles on it. I use Full Synthetic on both.

Car Manufacturers changed the way they view maintenance. Maintenance schedule is designed so the car will out last the warranty. If you want your car to last much longer you will need to do more maintenance sooner than their recommendations. However, you can’t listen to the Dealer. They have their bottom line and profitable service center making the decisions.

5000 miles should be max, if you have a sports car that you beat on I’d say 2500-3000
