I stopped by Bob's place about five years ago and purchased a Wyalusing and some darts....beautifully made and easy to use....plus as you can probably see.. Bob is a very nice person ...nice experience..

I would like to see what kind of force that thing generates and chronograph it. That last throw was brutal.... right in the face zone. It would probably go right through an animal.

Hello Bob, great video and beautiful wood work. I was wondering what the general dimensions of the atlatl shown in your video were? I know it tends to be a system of trial and error in regards to design. I do leather work and wood work (mainly carving) as well. However, I'd like to know the general dimensions of the one in your video to give me a starting point. Thanks in advance Bob for getting me started on making my first atlatl. Best Regards ~Harris (Corpus Christi, TX)

Harris Ashley The hook needs to be about the length of your arm from the handle plus or minus 3 or 4 inches. It will work over a wide range of lengths up to a point at either extreme where you will find the efficiency decreases markedly. The longer extreme is determined by your strength while the lower extreme is determined by your speed.

Hey Bob, Just wondering how long this atlatl is, from handle to spur. I'm using a Nanticoke from you currently, something that's served me very well for both fun and competition, and was looking for an upgrade. I've always admired the Wyalusing but wanted to check length first. Thanks!

You could be the father of (the hoss USMC) your voice and looks... Does it make the Atlatl faster if the it flexes as its pushing the dart? Kind of like a bow limb? Do atlatl weights actually do anything or were they just decoration? Thanks

What happens if you point more weight at the head behind the antler? Does that increase power/distance?
@Thunderbirdatlatl4 жыл бұрын
Not sure it would help
@zwush3 жыл бұрын
No it doesn't. You want to release the dart with maximum speed, so any more mass will only slow you down. The kinetic energy of the dart is only determined by its speed and mass.
@georgegonzalez-rivas37873 жыл бұрын
@@zwush Of course, but since momentum must be conserved I would think that more mass on the thrower will transfer more mass to the dart. It's like hitting a golf ball with an iron or a much-heavier driver -- clubhead speed will be the same but the golf ball will be traveling faster because there is more momentum to transfer to the ball. As you say, you don't want to make it so heavy that you can't move it quickly, but there is an optimum weight. You should try a few experiments.
@zwush3 жыл бұрын
@@georgegonzalez-rivas3787 But they are totally different. Hitting a ball with a club is a collision : en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Collision You transfer the kinetic energy that you build up in the swing to the ball, so the mass of the club plays an important role. The kinetic energy is only determined by its speed and mass: The formula is : Ekin= 1/2 *m*v^2 If you use an atlatl you accelerate both it and the dart while you throw. That means you also transfer kinetic energy from your arm to the atlatl. You just don't let go of it obviously. In this case m is the mass if the atlatl and Dart combined. If the atlatl is heavier it just takes away the energy of the dart. Your idea is like tying weights to your wrist in order to trow a ball further.
@georgegonzalez-rivas37873 жыл бұрын
@@zwush Nope. First of all you are thinking about kinetic energy rather than momentum ... that's a big mistake. Second, you are making too much of a distinction between and fast collision-based acceleration (goofball) and a slow one (atlatl to dart). Finally, you are trying to win a physics argument with a word processor instead of an experiment. Aristotle proved that to be a terrible approach 2400 years ago.
