We spent a day in the legendary Old West town of Dodge City which saw the likes of Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday, Bat Masterson & "Dirty Dave" Rudabaugh pass through it. Lots of interesting things to see and learn here!

Wyatt, was the Ford County Sheriff when Bat Masterson was the Dodge City town Marshall. The replica of the town is actually Boot Hill Cementery the City cut out the cemetery to to build the replica. They moved most of the graves out to the present day cemetery leaving a few at the original site for tourists. Squirrel tooth Alice was moved to the present day cemetery, she was the “maiden of the night “ that Miss Kitty was based off of for the television show. I haven’t been back to Dodge City since 1987, so was a treat to see it again. Thank you.

best quote sequence: "Wyatt Earp is my friend." "Hell, I got lotsa friends." "I don't." That says everything about Doc Holliday. Val Kilmer deserved the Oscar. My husband still says "I'll be your huckleberry" every time I ask him to do something.

Our last day of the 6th grade at NW Elementary our whole class biked to Boot Hill. They used to have a bunch of those machines like Clean Clara in the back of the Long Branch. I know because a bunch of us 12 year old boys found them. Thanks for the memories and for the new stuff I haven't seen.

Front street used to be where the parking lots are along Wyatt Earp downtown. It ran from Ave.B west to 7th street. When I was a kid, my dad used to take me with him to all the bars and taverns on Front Street. The one I remember the most was Goddard's Pool Hall, they always had a bottle of Chocolate Soldier for me. Later on, after being old enough to drink, (I was 18 in 1969) I went to some of the same bars that were still open at the time (I even played pool at Goddard's) this would have been in the late sixties, early seventies. I left Dodge City in 1984.

But I've always wanted to see every museum in America.. So thank you for your great videos, I'm binged watching!sincerely, your new subscriber! I live half a block, next to Pat Garrett's grave site in good old New Mexico, my father raised me on famous gun slingers and many historical places..you should check out Billy the kid's historical sites - pretty cool! Tombstone is one of my favorite movies too, downloaded it to my cell.. Lol it's uncanny how Kurt Russell looks like Wyatt Earp does in his photographs, even down to his stone cold poker face.. Lol great videos big guy!

LilithMoon29 - have you been to the site where Pat Garrett was murdered? Its in a arroyo just east of Las Cruces, quite a way off the beaten path. His son put up a basic concrete marker on the ground - thats all there is to it. I thought it was a great location to visit. Do some Google searched and you'll find it.

The set of the TV show Gunsmoke was an exact replica of Dodge City. Buck Taylor, who played Newly O'Brian on the show heads the restoration of Dodge City. He is the voice on the informational recordings there. There really was a woman who ran the Longbranch Saloon, although her name was Lily (if I remember correctly) instead of Kitty.

I live in SW Missouri and last year, I went over to Lamar for Wyatt Earp days. He lived there for a little while and his first wife, Urilla, is buried at the very rural Howell Cemetery that's just a few miles north and east of Lamar. Visiting that little cemetery and seeing her grave was a very interesting and somewhat sad adventure. She was so young to have died, taking her and Wyatt's unborn child with her in death. So the story goes, this is what caused Wyatt to become an outlaw as time passed. There were other women in his life but none ever took Urilla's place.

Dodge City was one of my favorite places to visit as a child. . .I'm from Colorado and when we went on vacation my Dad made sure that we stopped on the way back home. The area seems to have definitely changed since the 1960s and 1970s. . .there were a lot more things to see and visit. I remember a beautiful house across the street that housed a candy shop. . .and the museum had a glass casket with a skeleton in it. . .I had messaged them awhile back and was told that they had to take out that display (sad face) and that most all of the people buried in Boot Hill have been moved elsewhere. . .not sure why this happened. . .guess no matter how hard we don't want things to change, they do. . .haven't been back to Boot Hill since the early 70s. . .thanks for sharing this video. . .be safe !!

They also missed a lot of other things. The Gunfighter wax museum which is right across the street from Boothill Museum. The home of stone, which is the oldest building in the city. Ft. Dodge itself which is just east of Dodge City and the Whole reason Dodge City exists. Coronado's cross, which is a monument built by Coronado after he crossed the Arkansas river, also just east of town. The Santa Fe Trail, which is a ways west of town. 45 miles from Dodge City in Meade Kansas is the Dalton Gang Hideout. For old west geeks, there is a lot to see that wasn't covered in this video. There is also quite a bit more of the Museum, including the newest addition that houses all of the artifacts they couldn't fit in the front street part of the museum.

If you are in KS you need to go to these couple of sites. Ft. Larnard in Larnard KS is great. It is very restored to how it was back in the 1870s. Then go to Abiline. It has the Eisenhower Museum. The homes there look like they did back then. At Ft. Riley there is the cavalry museum.. It shows the history of the Army in the west. Then go to Lecompton, outside of Lawrence. It was the first territorial capital. There was a small battle there before the civil war between slavers and free state people. Then drive down to Osawatomie. That was the home of John Brown.

Actually, there is no documented evidence that Earp ever received the Buntline Colt-and he surely would never have actually carried something so slow & difficult to bring into action. I ve handled a replica of the Buntline and they are gawdawful for balance and length-and have crap for pointability.
@giantbryan7896
@giantbryan7896 4 жыл бұрын
Ever and never are a real long time. If you know the story of Colt, and Stewart Lake. So you are 100% correct that he didn’t use Buntline while being a lawman. Stewart Lake is responsible for the urban legend of Earp and the Buntline. Lake designed the Buntline and was friends with Earp and author of Wyatt Earp the Frontier Marshal . So yes Earp was given a Buntline. Now your statement concerning the weight and balance. The gun was designed to be used more of a club than a shooter, most lawmen at the time used too Buffalo the bad guys with the longer barrel. Now it is a fact, that Earp carried a 8 inch Smith & Wesson at the shootout. Glen Boyer and Casey Tefertiller both described Earp as a methodical shooter and not a Quick Draw. Also if you look at the people that Earp shot, he never had to do a quick draw...

@@giantbryan7896 THERE IS NO EVIDENCE, NO PROVENANCE AND NO DOCUMENTATION THAT EARP EVER OWNED A BUNTLINE SPECIAL - NONE. IF THERE IS WOULD YOU KINDLY SHOW IT TO US? HISTORIANS WOULD LOVE TO SEE IT. PLEASE DON'T USE STUART LAKE AS YOUR GO TO SCOURCE OF PROOF. LAKE HAS ALREADY BEEN DISCREDITED AS A LIAR AND A EXAGGERATOR.
@giantbryan7896
@giantbryan7896 3 жыл бұрын
@@Mr100741 you should check the lubricant in your keyboard. I agree 100% with your post, there is no proof that Earp had a buntline. But there is no proof that he didn’t own one. If you check my post; what I said was Lake developed the URBAN LEGEND of Earp carried that weapon. That doesn’t mean he didn’t own one, it means that we can never know for sure. What we do know for sure; 1) he didn’t ever hit anyone with one 2) he never carried one as a lawman 3) he never shot anyone in the vendetta ride. But Ned Buntline did give one to Stewart lake, and both were friends with Wyatt. Are you correct? You very well could be. Maybe we should ask Bob Bose Bell for his opinion.

Wyatt Earp expert and tech adviser on Tombstone Jeff Morey, through Stuart Lake’s daughter, got to go through all Her dad’s old papers and found letters Lake wrote to Alaska (I think) to Earp’s ex business partner there about the whereabouts of the long barreled Colt Earp gave him. It said the gun had a 10” barrel. Why would Lake try to find a gun he knew didn’t exist? Earp told him. So believe Earp or not, Lake believed it. Morey thinks Lake then gave the gun a 12” barrel for more dramatic effect in his book.The movie Tombstone gave Earp a 10”, not 12” gun for the film based on this.

Great channel. Just found it recently. Are you familiar with Wyatt Earps past in Peoria Illinois. He was known as the "Peoria Bummer" his early days were pretty crazy. Not certain he started out a lawman. Keep it up brother.... and watch that noggin

20 some years ago I spent a summer in Dodge. Locals seemed to have more respect for Matt Dillon than Wyatt earp or bat Mattson combined. Visited boot hill museum and unimpressed. Hit some of the local bars and learned alot!

Not only Tombstone but 3:10 to Yuma. The scene where Dan Evan's (christian bale) teenage son asks Ben Wade (Russell Crowe) "have you been to Dodge?" is epic too. Ben Wade's description is colorful XD, with lines like "women will do things to you..", complete with the gulp' from the kid was brilliant.

Most quotable movie of all time you say. Perhaps you have forgotten (or have not seen) Monty Python and the Holy Grail, the classic among many generations. Not quite the historical reference though. Great job on the video, really enjoyed it.

Tombstone (the movie) is the most quoted “drama.” Like how you snuck in a quote. The all-time quoted movie...Blazing Saddles. I went to Dodge City a very long time ago.

Here's something you may not know: John Wayne and Wyatt Earp were friends. The era of the frontier and the era of Hollywood overlapped more than you might think.

@@TheHistoryUnderground Some people claim that Wayne lied about meeting Earp, but I don't know how they can be so sure. Maybe that they were "friends" is too strong, but unless John Wayne was lying (surely not!) they did meet on set: www.thevintagenews.com/2017/04/09/while-working-as-a-prop-boy-john-wayne-met-wyatt-earp-he-later-credited-his-walk-talk-and-persona-to-his-acquaintance-with-earp/

As far as Clay Allison - that is probably not a photo of him, there are a number of known photos and to be honest they look nothing like this one (this one is widely attributed but probably mistakenly). And most of his 'work' was done with a pair of Colt Navies.
